EV Sales Rise in France, Germany and the UK as OIL PRICES SKYROCKET
-
EV sales are rising across France, Germany, and the UK as oil prices skyrocket, accelerating the shift away from petrol and diesel vehicles. In this video, we break down the latest electric vehicle sales data, why high fuel prices and energy costs are pushing drivers toward EVs, and how stricter EU emissions rules and new EV models from companies like Tesla, BYD, Volkswagen, and Hyundai are reshaping the European auto market. Discover why battery-electric cars are gaining market share rapidly in Europe, with EVs reaching around 19% of new car sales in early 2026, up sharply from the previous year.

00:00Guys, let's have a look at the EV sales for the two largest auto markets, well, two of
00:04the three, the three largest auto markets in Europe or the European area are the UK,
00:12France, and Germany.
00:14So let's look at EV sales, in fact, for all those three areas in the most recent data
00:20we have to see which EVs are selling and what the percentage of cars being sold in those
00:24areas are electric.
00:26Hello, my friends.
00:27Welcome to the channel.
00:28Great to have you with us.
00:29Let's get straight into this.
00:31France.
00:32France has market share for EVs of 26.7% in February, which is the last month we have data
00:39for.
00:40However, that's combined.
00:41Guys, if we separate plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars, the number is a bit lower.
00:45It's 24.4% for fully electric cars, and it is 10% exactly for plug-in hybrids.
00:53So you can see EVs are selling two and a half to one versus plug-in hybrids in France.
00:58Now, looking at the same month last year, EVs had 16% market share.
01:04So they've gone from 16% to 24.4%, which is a good increase.
01:09The most popular EVs in France last year in 2025, the Renault 5 was number one by far.
01:15I've got a Renault 5 just up there.
01:17That's the Alpine supercar version of the Renault 5.
01:21Tesla Model Y was second last year in France.
01:24Third was the Citroen EC3 that was followed by the Renault Scenic, then the Peugeot E208.
01:29Then well down on all those models was the BMW iX1 with 8,900 deliveries.
01:35If you wonder where the Tesla Model 3 was, there was 6,128 sales for the Model 3 in 2025.
01:43But there was 38,000 sales for the Renault 5 and nearly 20,000 for the Tesla Model Y.
01:50However, over the last few months, the most popular car in France, EV in France by a mile,
01:56a very long mile, has been the Renault 5 with 6,500 sales, followed in second place by the
02:01Peugeot E208, 1,902.
02:04Peugeot E2008 next, 1,700.
02:07The Renault Scenic, 1,700.
02:09The Citroen EC3, 1,570.
02:13The Renault 4, 1,530.
02:15The Dacia Spring, 1,240.
02:18And then the Tesla Model Y with 1,222 sales.
02:22So you can see Tesla sales over the last couple of months have been a bit down in France.
02:29What about Germany?
02:31Well, combined share, 34.5%.
02:34Fully electric EVs in Germany are nearly at France levels, but not quite.
02:3922.2%.
02:40Plug-in hybrids, 12.3%.
02:43So nearly two to one for EV sales versus plug-in hybrid sales.
02:49That compares with 15% for the same month last year.
02:53So February of last year, it was 14.9%.
02:56February this year, it was 22.2%.
02:58So a definite increase, a pretty good increase.
03:01Not double, but it's a good increase.
03:03What about the best-selling EVs in Germany?
03:07Well, for last year, the Volkswagen ID.7 for the whole year was the best seller, $34,500.
03:15Volkswagen ID.3 was second, $32,000.
03:18Third was the ID.4 slash ID.5, $26,500.
03:23In fourth, the Skoda Elrock, $25,400.
03:26Fifth, Skoda Enyaq, $25,400.
03:28Next, the BMW iX1, $19,000.
03:32Cupra Born, $18,850.
03:35Mini Cooper, $15,500.
03:37Cupra Tabascan, $14,000.
03:39Audi A6 e-tron, $13,800.
03:41Audi Q6 e-tron, $13,600.
03:44And then, finally, the Tesla Model Y at $12,300.
03:48So you can see, Model Y sales fell by 60% in Germany for 2025.

04:29All right, courtesy once again of Clean Technica, we have sales here for the UK.
04:33And interestingly, EVs basically smashed France and Germany when it comes to market share.
04:42They took 32.2% market share, up 40% year-on-year, 32.2%.
04:49That's one in every three, obviously, which is fantastic.
04:53Plug-in hybrids took about 11% market share.
04:56So three to one.
04:58For every three EVs sold, there's one plug-in hybrid sold.
05:01But that still means that 44% of cars were either plug-in hybrids or fully electric cars
05:06in the UK.
05:07And that means that the sales of gasoline-powered cars and diesel-powered cars
05:11are shrinking rapidly.
05:12Guys, some people believe that diesel will become a dead fuel in Europe within the next
05:18five years.
05:19Not for trucking, trucks potentially, but actually a lot of people think even trucks, it will
05:23be going away as well.
05:25So that's worth considering.
05:26I wouldn't be buying a diesel-powered vehicle right now if I were you, even if it's second-hand,
05:30if you're planning on holding onto it for a long time.
05:32So what were the best-selling cars in the UK?
05:35Well, last year, the best-selling EV brands, Tesla had 14% market share, BOD had 10%, Ford
05:4310%, Volkswagen 7%, BMW 6.2%, and Renault 5%, Audi 5% as well.
05:50But the best-selling EV in the UK last year in 2025 and in December, and I believe also
05:56in January this year, was the Tesla Model Y.
05:59And yeah, as you can see, Tesla hasn't been as badly affected in the UK as it has in Germany
06:06and France.
06:07So those are the numbers for EV sales in those three places.
06:11The UK, obviously, well and truly ahead at 32.2%, France around 25%, and Germany around
06:1822%.
06:19Now, I personally believe by 2030, these numbers will have reached around 80%, possibly even
06:27higher.
06:28But I could be wrong.
06:29Let me know what you think in the comments.
06:31Guys, thanks for watching.
