Electric vehicle sales are surging to record highs, driven by more choice and lower prices. New vehicle emissions standards, which came into force this month, are also expected to increase EV sales. And the market leader Tesla is already facing serious competition from newcomers.

00:57they'd probably prefer to get that out of the door.

01:27That's an exemption that's been afforded to those vehicles since 1986
01:31and cost taxpayers billions of dollars.
