00:00School background, awesome.
00:02Yes!
00:16I really love the world building and the propping creatures design.
00:22Can you please explain how did you work on that?
00:24Um, yeah, so much of it started with pieces of concept art and then really wanting to make sure that
00:35it all made ecological and evolutionary sense.
00:41So I didn't want it to just be, and frankly, it's really hard to just say, let's make it cool.
00:47And we've seen this kind of shape before.
00:50What if we made it this shape instead?
00:52Like, that's so hard to do.
00:55What made more sense to me was making it all feel more narratively essential and have the world feel interconnected.
01:02So we had the idea of we wanted everything on the planet to feel like it could kill him.
01:09So even the ground, even the grass.
01:12The bugs, yeah, explosive bugs.
01:15So it was like, let's make the grass razor grass.
01:19And then there's a creature that he needs to hunt in the grass.
01:22So it should be designed with having like antler style armor to allow it to exist and graze in the
01:32grass.
01:33And that formed the design of the bone bison.
01:37So it was that kind of thinking that allowed us to create both the planet and the animal species that
01:45inhabit it.
01:47Basically, the planet Jenna is Australia.
01:50Everything is little there.
01:52Everything is deadly.
01:53That's the irony.
01:54We filmed the movie in New Zealand, where there are technically no predators on the island.
02:01There's nothing there that can actually kill you.
02:03The opposite of Australia.
02:04So we had to bring a predator to New Zealand.
02:08You made the impossible possible because you made me feel feelings for predator.
02:17That they say that you are friends of no one.
02:23They are predators of everyone.
02:27So how did you make it?
02:29Because it's interesting, the relationship between the sentient and him.
02:34Because she's so sensitive.
02:36He thinks that sensitivity is weakness.
02:40And he teaches her to never give up.
02:45Because he often says, you give up too easily.
02:47So how did you balance these two opposites?
02:51Yeah, I mean, that was the core of it.
02:54That's the fun of watching a relationship.
02:57Is seeing how disparate two characters are.
03:00And then finding in each other some similarity.
03:05And I think Demetrius brought so much intensity to Deck that I never could have imagined off the page.
03:16While also being able to be vulnerable and having it make sense and not feeling like this is a bifurcated
03:24character.
03:24It really comes from the character.
03:26Oftentimes I think that level of aggression and intensity is a mask for something inside.
03:32And I think Demetrius captured that so well.
03:36And Elle was so gifted at being really funny and charming and luminous.
03:46But then there's moments where she has to bring a physicality that is very unexpected.
03:55And a solidness that they bring out in each other.
04:03Do you believe that we will ever see Deck's mom?
04:09I would be very excited for us all to finally meet the mom.
04:15Should we be afraid?
04:18It certainly seemed like some people were afraid of what mom is.
04:25Yeah.
04:26I can't wait for you.
04:27Thank you so much.
04:28Thank you.
04:28Great job.
04:29Thank you.
04:30Appreciate it.
04:45Thank you.
04:47Thank you.
04:48Grazie.
