Transcript
00:00Hey, I'm Milo Ventimiglia.
00:01I'm Ariel Kebel, and we are in conversation with Us Weekly.
00:06So this isn't our first time working together.
00:08It isn't?
00:08It isn't.
00:09It actually wasn't our first time working together.
00:12But do you remember when we very first met, that very first time a long time ago?
00:17We were just talking about this.
00:18I was trying to remember.
00:20But you said, I think it was the ice skating rink.
00:23It was the ice skating rink.
00:24It was the ice skating rink.
00:25Yeah, which happened to be Ariel's very first day filming ever in the business.
00:30Ever, yeah.
00:31Ever, ever, ever.
00:32I got the job the day before.
00:34And we were on set.
00:35And we were on set.
00:36But I didn't kiss you.
00:38No, well, you know, that would have been, that would like spun the whole Gilmore lore world
00:42into like a whole other place.
00:44They would have hated me even more.
00:45Because let's face it, they hated me.
00:47But I kissed Dean.
00:48What are you going to do?
00:48It's okay.
00:49Hey, it was Jared.
00:49It was Jared.
00:50It was Jared.
00:51True story.
00:52I actually accidentally called him Dean in hair and makeup when I met him.
00:57Because I was so nervous.
00:59And I was like playing it cool.
01:00I was like, what's up, Dean?
01:02And then later I was like.
01:04Did he ever, but did he have a reaction to that?
01:07No, he was really nice about it.
01:08Because that's who Jared is.
01:11That's who Dean is.
01:11No, I'm kidding.
01:12That's who Jared is.
01:13No, that's who Jared is.
01:14Yeah.
01:14And it was my first on-screen kiss.
01:16So he was also very good about that.
01:18Yeah.
01:18Oh, wow.
01:19What a day.
01:20What a first, first day.
01:23Yeah.
01:23Who knew we'd be sitting here now?
01:24Okay.
01:25So Milo, you play Tim Timmons in the film.
01:29Who is obvious.
01:30This is based on the real guy.
01:32Yeah.
01:33The real guy, Tim Timmons.
01:33And the real Hillary.
01:35The real Hillary.
01:35We're the fake Tim and Hillary.
01:37Yeah, we're the Femmins.
01:37We're the Femmins.
01:38We're the Femmins.
01:39They're the realies.
01:40They're the real Timmons.
01:41Yeah, the real Timmons.
01:42Yeah.
01:42So how did you feel about playing a real character?
01:49And what I have seen, if you could share a little bit more, is how special the bond between
01:55you two has, like, I mean, it seems like you guys are besties now.
01:59We've kind of become one.
02:01Right.
02:01So, I mean, and you know this from playing Hillary.
02:05It's like, they are such lovely people.
02:07Yes.
02:07Hillary and Tim are just the most amazing people you've ever met.
02:10And they have such a wonderful family.
02:13And the entirety of them is inspiring.
02:18I mean, being a new parent, I'm like, man, I want my kids to be like the Timmons kids.
02:22And parenting style.
02:23But, you know, Tim and I, like, we kind of went into it with open hearts.
02:29It's the responsibility we have in playing real life people, you know, and what consequences
02:36of decisions in life and whatnot are.
02:38It's like, hey, we're representing them.
02:41So it was important for me just to get to know Tim.
02:45God, I'm like, just like the most fundamental level of his essence and his spirit and who
02:50he was.
02:51And then, you know, pick up all the little quirks and the fun that the two of them have.
02:55And you shaved your head.
02:56And I buzzed my head and I grew my beard and did all that.
03:00And every time I looked over at you guys on set, you were like cracking up or you were
03:03playing guitar together.
03:04You were like doing his podcast or you two really, it was incredible to see you were
03:09two peas in a pod.
03:10Yeah.
03:11Yeah.
03:11I mean, it literally was like one of like the best gifts to film was like being able
03:14to like, oh, I got a new friend that I'm going to know the rest of my life.
03:17This is awesome.
03:17I really saw that.
03:19And you know, the other thing I love is like real Tim and Hillary too.
03:22Like the way that they're so joyful with each other.
03:26Yeah.
03:26I remember that one line.
03:27I don't know if it's still in there, but when they added for you to say, thank you for
03:32like knowing my love language because of all the joking.
03:37It's not in there.
03:38And it's not in there.
03:49They're also share so much joy together.
03:51Absolutely.
03:52Absolutely.
03:53They're wonderful people.
03:54Yeah.
03:55And we play the married them in the movies.
03:58Married them.
03:58Check it out.
03:59So, okay.
03:59I mean, speaking of that, you did, you played my wife, Hillary Timmons in the movie.
04:03I can only imagine two.
04:05I mean, what, cause I wondered about this.
04:07What was the best part about being married to me and getting to be my better half?
04:14Nothing.
04:16Which by the way, is phrased very much.
04:18It's a very timid thing to say.
04:20So what was it like for you to like love me?
04:22Yeah.
04:22Like, did you just love every second of loving me?
04:25How could you not?
04:27I love you.
04:28Well, gosh, honestly, part of why I was so excited to do the movie was I felt like we
04:32had such sweet scenes together.
04:33Like, and there was so much joking, but I have to say, I, it's also not in the movie
04:40anymore, but the scene where you throw the smoothie at me, I just have never had someone
04:46throwing a smoothie at me.
04:48Deleted scenes.
04:49You're going to love them.
04:50You're going to love them.
04:51But the way that like, I genuinely was laughing.
04:53And I remember when they called cut, I was genuinely laughing.
04:55And I also knew that that led into such an intimate scene between us.
04:59Oh yeah.
04:59When they discover Hillary was pregnant and the first baby and the, the, the joy and the
05:05pain of that at the same time, the grief and the gratitude.
05:08The grief and the gratitude.
05:09And so to go from like this laughing, funny prank moment into that, I just thought, wow.
05:15So it's not in there, but in terms of memories, I mean, I really loved a lot, but I just
05:20loved
05:21laughing with you.
05:22And like, I don't know, like, I mean, you nailed me.
05:25Like you, you three, he threw a smoothie across the room.
05:28I have a mask on, so I was fine, but it was just like, it was fun to play like
05:33that.
05:33Yeah.
05:34Yeah.
05:34What about you?
05:35And that's very much the spirit of who like Tim and Hillary were.
05:37Yes.
05:37Um, it's hard to pick a single moment.
05:42Uh, we had so many.
05:44I mean, even, you know, little asides that Arielle and I would have even like by the tour
05:48bus, Oh, I know you're pregnant.
05:52That was one of, actually that was a pretty good one, but like, we're not mic'd or we
05:57were mic'd, but maybe you didn't hear it.
05:59I don't even know if you made the movie, but like she's pregnant and I kind of rub her belly
06:04for luck.
06:04And then you think you rubbed my head for luck, but it's just a shaved head and then another
06:08time you kissed my belly and it was just, every take was a little different, but it just felt
06:13like we kept, and then there was another time where you were like pulling me on the bus and
06:18it made me giggle.
06:19Oh yeah.
06:19Yeah.
06:19Yeah.
06:20Yeah.
06:20Yeah.
06:21It was so playful.
06:22None of that was scripted.
06:23So you can tell them you love being my, my movie husband.
06:25Oh, right.
06:26So the thing that I love most about this movie was playing, playing his movie wife full circle.
06:32Yeah.
06:32Yeah.
06:34Um, but also, Hey, the movie is, uh, it's a powerful story about music.
06:38Was there ever a song for you and like the history of your life that helped you get through
06:42a tough time?
06:43Gosh, that was a very deep question.
06:45Um, I'm probably not going to go that deep in this moment, but I'll tell you why.
06:49I'll tell you why.
06:50Because I swear to you, when we wrapped that film, I went home and blasted Trace Atkins,
06:57Honky Donk, Badonkadonk.
06:59Yes.
06:59And danced around my house on repeat and just felt so sexy.
07:05And so it maybe wasn't like getting me.
07:08Well, actually I was going through some stuff and it lifted me up.
07:12So yeah.
07:13Trace Atkins, Honky Donk, Badonkadonk.
07:15Oh man.
07:15By the way, that still remains one of my daughters, my infant daughter's favorite songs.
07:19Oh, really?
07:20She moves her butt.
07:21She just boogies to it.
07:21She does.
07:22She's so boogies to it.
07:23She loves Trace.
07:24I knew I liked her.
07:25Yeah, I know.
07:26Right?
07:26As much fun as it is talking about, I can only imagine.
07:29Let's be real.
07:30Let's get back to Gilmore Girls.
07:32Right?
07:33Totally.
07:33Give the people what they want.
07:34Okay.
07:35Um, so here's a question.
07:36Okay.
07:36How did you feel about coming back into the show to marry Dean?
07:44What was that season?
07:46I think it was, it was either four or five.
07:49Like I was not a regular on it.
07:50You weren't a regular on it at that point.
07:52You weren't a regular on it?
07:53No, I only did two years as a regular, two and three seasons, two and three.
07:55And then I would pop back in because Amy and Dan would call me.
07:58Amy Sherman Palladino and Dan Palladino.
08:00Cause they love you.
08:01They love you.
08:02Like they just, they're wonderful people that are always just like, Hey, you want to come
08:05back?
08:05Yeah, of course.
08:06Come on girls.
08:08Totally.
08:08I didn't realize that.
08:09Okay.
08:10Yeah.
08:10So I think I came in season three and either by season four or five, we were married,
08:14but I want to say it was four.
08:16Yeah.
08:16Um, I was surprised because we were a very new relationship and I also think we were 18 in
08:23the show.
08:23Um, and then I was 18, I think in real life.
08:27And so I was surprised.
08:29I remember my mom was with me on set.
08:32Cause I just moved out there and I put on the wedding dress and she cried.
08:35And I was like, mom, this is, you gotta stop.
08:39Like, did your mom also go up to Jared and tell him like, Hey, this is her first wedding.
08:43First wedding.
08:45Treat her right.
08:46Treat her right.
08:46No, she only did that with the kiss.
08:48Okay.
08:48She told Jared it was my first TV onscreen kiss and I was mortified and he loved it.
08:53Um, but yeah.
08:55And then it was really sweet.
08:57It was so kind of quick.
08:59I remember.
09:00And again, Jared making it, I was nervous, but I remember Jared just making it easy and
09:04fun and, you know, kind of like just another day of filming.
09:09And, um, did you pick up any, like, do you kind of get vilified for it for marrying Dean?
09:15You got some grief.
09:17People hate me.
09:17They gave you grief.
09:18Oh, it's only recently that people have said justice for Lindsay.
09:22And I'm like, thank you.
09:24Got it.
09:24So, so the younger kids coming up that are just now getting into the show.
09:28No, sorry.
09:28Oh, the ones from the original viewers, the ones that are like in their thirties or forties.
09:32Now they hated you.
09:34Yes.
09:34But the kids that are watching the show these days are like justice for Lindsay.
09:37They're the smart ones.
09:38Oh, wow.
09:39They're going to change the world.
09:39They're going to change the world.
09:40Thank God.
09:41You know, um, but speaking of being on the show and our scenes together, we were talking
09:49about this too, cause we had a hard time remembering what scene this was.
09:54Do you remember what scene I'm going to talk about?
09:55Go for it.
09:56Okay.
09:57Set it up.
09:57Tee it up.
09:58Oh, I'm going to tee it up.
10:00I'm going to tee it up.
10:01It is about a little band called Matchbox 20.
10:05Do you remember?
10:06Am I striking a ring about?
10:08The funny thing is, I mean, for, for either of us, that was how many years ago?
10:1123 years ago?
10:13Or like five.
10:16Man, my hairline wishes it was five.
10:20But, uh, I, I kind of, I kind of remember.
10:23I mean, we didn't have a whole lot of on-screen time together.
10:26There was a hockey rink.
10:27There was a few things.
10:28Cause it was kind of Jess and Dean didn't really dance much together.
10:31Well, and also it was very much like Lindsay and Dean, Jess and Rory.
10:36Totally.
10:36What's going to happen?
10:38Hashtag team Jess anyways.
10:41Um, but the scene in question was about Matchbox 20.
10:45Yes.
10:46I remember Jess being a bit of a jerk, um, saying something snipey about.
10:51Yeah, you said he was kind of a jerk.
10:52I didn't think that.
10:53I just thought he was like, you know, the guy in the leather jacket vibes.
10:57Well, that's the thing.
10:58Did people think you were a jerk?
11:00I, the only time in my career I've ever had somebody walk up and say,
11:04Hey, are you, are you that guy from Gilmore Girls?
11:06And I'm like, Oh yeah.
11:07And she goes, Oh my God, I hate you.
11:09I had that too.
11:11At a coffee bean.
11:12Yeah.
11:12I was at a gym.
11:13I was at an LA fitness and I'm like, Oh, thanks.
11:16Yes.
11:17And then I walked away going, I did my job right.
11:19Because Jess is kind of, that's Jess.
11:21He's just Jess.
11:22You did your job.
11:23I did my job right.
11:23I like your shirt.
11:24Is that a band?
11:26Yeah.
11:28Are they good?
11:29No, they're terrible.
11:30I wear the shirt to make people ask me if they're good so I can tell them that they suck.
11:35Oh, well, I like Matchbox 20.
11:40I'm gonna go find Rory.
11:43F***.
