00:00Praticare, praticare, è la storia della mia vita, lavoro, lavoro, lavoro
00:11Signore e signori, date un caloroso benvenuto alla futura leggendaria
00:19Jamie New
00:21Io? Scusi prof, fantasticavo
00:24I love the Dorothy Shoes moment in your movie
00:28How important was that sequence?
00:32Jamie comes from a very working class community
00:35You know, his mom has, his mom works in a very small supermarket
00:39Earns very little money
00:41So those shoes were a massive gift
00:44Enormous for her
00:46But not just in terms of money
00:48In terms of what those shoes meant
00:51Because those shoes are difficult to walk in
00:55Both literally and metaphorically
00:58Because for her to hand her 16 year old boy those shoes and say go find your joy in these
01:08was massive
01:09Because she doesn't necessarily understand the whole world of drag or that
01:14But she knows she loves her son
01:16And wants to give him those shoes in which he can find his joy
01:20And I think that moment that she hands it over
01:25She's nervous of it as well
01:27Because it's like watching your fledgling fly
01:34And that's a very nerve-wracking moment
01:37I think especially for a mother
01:40Jamie's friend tells him stop waiting for permission to be you
01:45I think that is a suggestion that everybody should follow
01:50But it's not easy, how can we do it?
01:53Think through balance, Valentina
01:55You know, because it's
01:57We are ourselves
01:59We arrive into the world fully ourselves, you know
02:03And it's outside that people start to judge or make judgment about us
02:09And then we change inside
02:11Because we get frightened of expressing our joy
02:15And we don't really need permission to be ourselves
02:20We are ourselves fully
02:22But what I also think the story looks at is that it's not just about ourselves
02:29We live in community
02:31We have to accept each other as different, as special, as unique
02:36But also that we share something in common
02:39And I think the thing I hope that we share in common from this film
02:44Is joy
02:45Is the need to express our joy
02:48Oh, well, I'm not too sure
02:51I'm just a 20-year-old from England
02:53I haven't got all the answers
02:54But I am
02:56Yeah, I think that that's a very good little mantra that she has
03:00To stop waiting for permission to be you
03:02And I think at the end of the day
03:04You have to prioritise your own happiness before anything else
03:07Jamie realises that drag isn't just a TV show, a reality show
03:14But it's a revolution
03:15I agree with him
03:17And how important it was for you
03:20Doing justice, making justice to drag?
03:24It's really important
03:25Because drag is absolutely a vehicle for self-expression
03:30For saying this is me in all my fabulousness
03:34And I can find a way of expressing myself
03:37And RuPaul from Drag Race says, you know
03:41We are all born naked
03:43And the rest is drag
03:46So we all have our own versions of drag
03:49And it might not be fabulous lips
03:52It might not be a great dress
03:53But it might be something very simple
03:56But it's a way of expressing ourselves freely
04:00Without shame
04:01And with great joy
04:03And I think that's the revolution
04:05The revolution is
04:06This is the place that we all belong
04:09And however you express yourself
04:12However you find your joy
04:15That we are entitled to that
04:18Richard E. Grant, a character, says to Jamie
04:20Practice, practice, practice
04:22How important is practising?
04:25And how much did you rehearse the musical numbers with your actors?
04:31Practice, practice
04:32It's the story of my life
04:34Work, work, work
04:35You know, we put a lot of practice into everything
04:41Particularly the musical numbers
04:43You know, Kate Prince, our choreographer
04:45Worked with all those young people
04:47For quite a few weeks
04:50We had what we called boot camp
04:52You know, where everybody came together
04:54Max included, who plays Jamie
04:57And we worked and we worked and we worked and we worked
05:00So, because all those young people
05:03It was their first jobs
05:04For many of them
05:06They'd never worked before
05:07Max, this is his first professional job
05:10So of course it took practice
05:11Of course it took training
05:14But they brought their brilliant, brilliant talent
05:17You know
05:19But yes, you have to put in the work
05:22In order to send it out into the world
05:25Oh, we rehearsed day and night
05:28We had what we called Jamie boot camp
05:31Where we went into a dance studio
05:34And just drilled the numbers like all day
05:37And I'm not a dancer
05:39I haven't really danced before
05:41So I had to like practice, practice, practice
05:44In order to not look like an idiot in this movie
05:46I won't spoil the ending
05:48But let's just say that the younger generation
05:53Is more open than the teacher
05:56Than Jamie's teacher
05:58Do you believe that it's so
06:01Younger people now are more open
06:05And understand better that we are all on the same boat
06:10So we must accept each other
06:13Exactly, I think younger people are having a different conversation now
06:18Than when I was a young person
06:20The conversation is different
06:21And it is more open
06:26Valentina, not everywhere
06:28And not for everybody
06:30So the conversation needs to keep happening
06:33We need to keep spreading that conversation
06:36We need to keep telling stories
06:39Jamie is just one story of many
06:42Many of many diverse people
06:44You know, all need to be represented
06:47And all their stories need telling
06:51But yes, the conversation is changing
06:55And it needs to keep developing and moving forward
06:58Our importance is doing the one thing
07:02That makes you happy in life
07:04It's unbelievably important
07:07Because at the end of the day
07:08You know, it's your life
07:09And you can't be living it to appease other people
07:12Or not being your most authentic self
07:16Out of fear of what other people might say
07:18Or what other people might think
07:19Because at the end of the day
07:21The people around you will shift
07:23And they will change throughout your life
07:25And you're the only person
07:26Who's with you for the long haul, you know?
07:29Okay, thank you so much
07:30Great work
07:31I love the movie
07:33Valentina, it's a pleasure to see
07:35And your top is amazing
07:36Oh, thank you
07:37It's a dress
07:38So
07:41Bye
07:42Bye
07:42Cause I'm gonna be the one
07:46Bye
07:47Bye
07:47Bye
07:48Bye
07:49Bye
