00:00Ehm, I like to say I do my own stunts in that I call myself the Tom Cruise of the
00:04drag movie musical teenage world
00:14Signore e signori
00:16Date un caloroso benvenuto
00:17Alla futura leggendaria
00:21Jamie New
00:24Scusi prof fantasticavo
00:26Patti tells Jamie that he has to stop waiting for permission to be him, but it's not easy. How can
00:34we do it?
00:35Wow, that's like a what a great question to start with. I think it's a really not a cookie cutter
00:40answer to that
00:41Like I feel like my best advice to stop waiting for permission to be you is to align yourself with
00:47the people that love you
00:48And like when you have friends like pretty or a mum like Margaret who are telling you to stop waiting
00:54for permission to be you
00:56You should listen to them and lean on those people that you're reliant on
01:00And truly for me that when I stopped waiting for permission to be myself that the way that happened for
01:07me is that I
01:09Immersed myself
01:10Immersed myself amongst people who I wanted had similar interests with like other actors other creative people and
01:16That really enabled me to step firmly into a place that I was happy
01:20Your character realizes that drag isn't just a reality show, but it's a revolution
01:25So how important was for you paying respect to drag?
01:29Yeah, I mean drag I've been such a huge fan of it for sure and I've in the last you
01:34know five ten years
01:35RuPaul's Drag Race has really been like like plowing through the mainstream and
01:40Putting drag right in the center of pop culture
01:44It's been you know been in queer culture for a long time, but I am being such a huge fan
01:50of it
01:50I wanted to be completely respectful and make sure that none of the drag queens who aren't whom I love
01:55Um read me down to my performance in the lip sync. So I worked very very hard to try and
02:02Create that drag because I hadn't done drag before so
02:04I wanted to do a good job
02:05Richard E. Grant character tells Jamie
02:09Practice, practice, practice
02:11How important is practicing and how much did you rehearse the musical numbers?
02:16So much. Yeah practice is very important and
02:19It's important to note that you know like the film that you see took so long to make and you
02:25know
02:25We spent 12 hour days shooting those dance routines and you what you see is the three minute cut version
02:31of all the best bits that we shot so
02:33Um, you definitely have to practice really hard and and be ready. Yeah, but I really enjoyed rehearsals and got
02:40an opportunity to really do what we call Jamie boot camp
02:43And worked with loads of coaches acting accent and singing dancing to make sure that I was ready to shoot
02:51the scenes
02:51What did you think when you first saw those amazing Dorothy slippers like shoes?
02:58Yeah, I literally thought of I literally thought of Dorothy. I was like wow
03:01I'm about to go down the yellow brick road and be in the Wizard of Oz
03:05They were difficult to to walk in
03:07Or or not?
03:09I was absolutely fine and fantastic in them. I'm joking. No, very very difficult. No. Yeah, obviously they're very high
03:16and
03:16And um, it took me a long time to practice walking in those especially on that really thin wall in
03:22the wind
03:22Um, I like to say I do my own stunts in that I call myself the the Tom Cruise of
03:27the the drag movie musical teenage world
03:32Amazing! And I won't spoil the ending, but let's just say that
03:37Um, the new generation is more open than the previous one because the
03:43Jamie's classmates are more open than his teacher
03:47Do you believe it's true that there's hope in younger people?
03:51I think there's hope everywhere. Um, and we're very very very lucky to be where we are now
03:56We are we are nowhere near there yet. Um, and we still need to continue to stand up for
04:02People who are in marginalized groups who are facing oppression
04:06And all sorts of stuff and hopefully more films like this
04:10You know, this is just one story I have to say from our community
04:13You know, there's so many more stories that need to be given the platform
04:16By you know huge companies to tell their stories to be told by those people
04:22And hopefully we can we can make some real change
04:25How important is doing the one thing that makes you happy in life?
04:30Really important. I think I mean
04:32If you if you're not enjoying it don't do it
04:35You know, like it's life's can be very short and if the pandemic has taught us anything
04:41It's to you know to really cherish every moment that we have so
04:45Um, I would just say to do what makes you happy for sure
04:49Okay, thank you so much great work. Bye.
04:53Thank you very much. Take care
04:54Cos'I'm gonna be the one
