Intervista a Michael Gracey, regista di Pink: All I know so far, documentario girato durante il Beautiful Trauma World Tour.
Trascrizione
00:00Being a rock star is not something that people usually associate with, you know, being a mum.
00:05And she just does it, she does it so well.
00:13This is beyond my wildest dreams.
00:20Hi, so what do you know about Pink so far after this film?
00:28That's a good question.
00:30I mean, what I know is probably true to the fact that when I first started working with her, I
00:41was amazed at the way she juggles being a rock star and being a mum.
00:46You know, like, she doesn't really separate her family life.
00:50Her tour family and her family are sort of this one unit.
00:56And I always thought that was really beautiful because, you know, being a rock star is not something that people
01:03usually associate with, you know, being a mum.
01:06And she just does it, she does it so well, you know.
01:10And there is just these really magic moments.
01:13I guess the things I didn't know, which I now know, are things like, you know, the fact that Carrie
01:21and Jameson sit out by the sound desk and they watch every show out there in the audience.
01:27And Willow, her daughter is literally under the stage, running around, making sure she's there when her mum comes off
01:36stage, you know, doing the quick changes with her, racing back.
01:41And as her mum comes up to the next song, she stands there and sings along with her.
01:46Those little sort of intimate moments I found so touching.
01:51And it was just, it was wonderful that we got to capture that.
01:57Why did you choose Black and White in those particular moments when she opens up and speaks about herself?
02:07Yeah, it's a good question.
02:09I just felt that I wanted to differentiate when we were sort of going to a very personal place.
02:19And, you know, I think with the film, there's lots of colour and there's lots of show and there's lots
02:24of, and it's just, it just gave it a sort of intimacy to just go.
02:28So, and it's sort of, it's sort of subliminally says to the audience, now we're going to something different, you
02:38know, now it's not the show, it's not the spectacle.
02:42It's something quite personal.
02:44And, you know, again, those moments weren't sort of staged interviews.
02:48They were sort of driving with her to a rehearsal and, you know, after a show, you know, she's had
02:57a shower and she's just having a quiet drink of wine and chatting with her husband, you know, Carrie.
03:03Like they were just, it was just, they were never formal interviews where it was like, now let's sit down
03:09and talk about this.
03:10It was just, and again, I think that's why they feel more conversational.
03:17Thanks to your movie, we see that Pink is really open to different people and different experiences.
03:26Do you think that being so open to other people, to different people makes her music better?
03:34I think Pink's always been consistent with her messaging, with the things that she believes and stands up for.
03:43She doesn't, you know, if you listen to interviews with her when she was 18, she's saying the same things
03:50she says today, you know, and I think that there is so, her music is very personal.
03:59So the way she lives her life comes across in what she writes.
04:05And so I, you know, I think that's, that's different, I guess, to artists who just, you know, sing other
04:12people's songs.
04:13You know, she's, she's just not that artist.
04:16She, she has a lot to say and she says it incredibly well musically.
04:23Why do you love performers so much?
04:26Because you've done The Greatest Showman now with this documentary, now after you will do a movie about Robin Williams.
04:33So why do you love performers so much?
04:37That's a good question.
04:38I love, I think, I love that there is something about musical storytelling that I, I'm very fascinated with.
04:52And I think there's such a power.
04:58When, when words no longer suffice, you sing.
05:02So if you're in the depths of despair and you, you break into song, if you're in moments of, you
05:12know, extreme joy and you break into song, it's, to me, there's something incredibly powerful about that.
05:20And so I'm always fascinated by musical narrative and, and I've loved it my whole life.
05:29You know, when, when I used to go and see musicals as a kid, I was just like, so excited
05:35and so blown away by these stories that were being told through song.
05:41So I think that's, that's just, that's always going to be the case.
05:47Speaking about music, after one year at home, watching this, this film with all those people enjoying together, a concert
05:59was really moving for me.
06:02Can you explain why it's so magic, why it's so powerful listening to music together with real people, with a
06:11real stage?
06:12Why it's so magic and powerful?
06:16I think, I think the truth is it's all, it's all shared experiences.
06:22So I think the human condition is one where we want to share an experience and there's something special about,
06:30we all saw that performance on that day live and no one will ever see that same performance.
06:38They'll never see exactly what we saw.
06:42And whether that's sharing that with 10 people or a hundred thousand people, everyone sort of has those boasting rights
06:50of like, I was there on that day and I saw that special performance.
06:54And I just think that, you know, whether it's theater or even film, I think people love coming together, you
07:02know, Mike Lee, I think once said that film is dreaming in public and it's a shared experience.
07:13And that I, I kind of feel is so true.
07:17There's something when you get in a room with a lot of people and you witness a film, a concert,
07:23a play, that that shared experience is, is what unites you.
07:30And yeah, I think there's a real undeniable, as you pointed out, it's, it's something that we've all missed desperately.
07:39Since you were there that day, what did you feel?
07:43What was the magic that day?
07:47I mean, the magic of that day was, you know, Wembley is an, it's an iconic state of the playing,
07:54you know, and we've all seen those concerts there, you know,
07:58you've seen footage of people playing Wembley Stadium.
08:02So, you know, to me, you know, to see Pink up on that stage and know the process that she's
08:10gone through to get there,
08:14seeing her up there and seeing Willow under the stage, watching on and, you know, Jameson and Carrie out there
08:22in the audience.
08:22There is, there was this amazing scale to what was, you know, really special, but then there was also this
08:31intimacy of just a single daughter standing under stage singing along with her mom.
08:37And I guess those, those two, those two narratives that were going on at the same time, for me, was
08:47incredibly special.
08:49Okay, thank you so much. Great work, by the way.
08:53Thanks, Valentina. Lovely to meet you.
08:56Bye.
08:56Bye.
