00:00People aren't always lying, but they sometimes are speaking around the truth.
00:06They're circling it like an airplane.
00:10Io ti metterò al volante di un'auto alle manna.
00:15Devi solo chiudere la bocca e lasciarmi lavorare.
00:21Ok.
00:23I really love the relationship between the father and the son in your movie.
00:28How important is to pass to our children, not only DNA, DNA could be bad or good, but to pass
00:37passion.
00:38How important is it?
00:39Yes, I agree.
00:40I think that what's so beautiful in that scene, it's about that relationship,
00:45is it's a father trying to share with his son his obsessions, what drives him,
00:53what he finds most beautiful in the world, what he's working toward.
00:59And in another way, he's also explaining to his son, when I'm not here with you and your mother,
01:04these are the things I am thinking about.
01:07This is who I am.
01:09And I think, I mean, I'm a father.
01:11I think this is a fantasy, a dream to be able to share with your children a sense of who
01:18you really are,
01:19what you care most about.
01:20And what I think is so interesting in the relationship between Christian Bale's character and his son in our movie,
01:26is also that his son is trying to save his father in some ways.
01:31His son is reminding his dad that he doesn't have to be perfect.
01:35That he's great already.
01:39Because his father is so driven in a way it worries his son.
01:43And I think that's another beautiful part of the relationship that Peter Miles, Ken Miles' son,
01:50is also kind of seeing his dad's obsession and understanding that he almost needs someone to tell him it's okay.
01:59You don't need to do this for me.
02:02At the end of the movie, Matt Damon's character says that words are not useful sometimes.
02:09And you said that you agree with this quote because words not always are true.
02:16That's true.
02:16But words in songs, because music in your movies is so important.
02:22I think Walk the Line here, also Logan, the music in the car.
02:27So how important is music for you?
02:30Music is very important.
02:31Words are also important.
02:33But I think it's to know what they mean.
02:35That the music we listen to is very often the person we wish we are.
02:41Or the person we want to be.
02:43Music is a kind of like clothing.
02:47It's something we put on that describes who we aspire to be.
02:51Or an idea or an energy we want to be.
02:56Our words are a whole different story.
02:58Our words in life, if you study words as a writer, I'm always listening to what people say and what
03:05I say and what others say.
03:07And it is so rare in real life that people are speaking of their true feelings.
03:12And I find it's such a lie in movies that people are so often just saying exactly how they feel.
03:19And that, so I do try and capture in my films more of the idea that people aren't always lying
03:28but they sometimes are speaking around the truth.
03:31They're circling it like an airplane.
03:34You know, they aren't quite landing.
03:35They are testing whether the truth, the other side, can handle what they feel by revealing only a little of
03:42it.
03:43And certainly that's even more cinematic because the camera can see the distance between the words and the feelings inside.
03:51I really love movies where there's an obsession but also teamwork.
03:56I think that teamwork is what defines us as human beings because animals don't do teamwork, not always.
04:03Right.
04:03So why do you think that we always forget to do teamwork? How important is teamwork?
04:10I think, I think, I hope we don't forget.
04:13I think that we live in an age, I think our phones, Instagram, Facebook, blah, blah, blah, where everyone is
04:20about making themselves important, promoting themselves.
04:25And that the idea of being famous or important is an individualist idea.
04:32And that the real romance in life, as you say, comes from accomplishing things together.
04:39And I'm not sure why that's evaporated, but that I think it's a sign of an unhealthy culture when people
04:48are all only working for their own benefit.
04:52Okay. Thank you so much.
04:53Thank you so much. Pleasure.
04:54I really enjoyed your movie.
04:55Oh, good.
04:56Really beautiful.
04:56Thank you.
04:58Thank you.
04:59Se questo fosse un concorso di bellezza, avremmo perso.
05:04L'aspetto non è tutto.
