00:13For me, it's always about the character.
00:17When Pei Lin presented this story to Jenny and I,
00:21that's the first question in my mind.
00:24Can I live in the skin of this character?
00:27Because I spent my entire career bringing characters to life
00:33from the inside out.
00:34And it was really important to me to know,
00:40do I believe in what this character believes?
00:44And when I was reading the script,
00:48there's this moment where Fei-Fei has built this rocket to the moon
00:52and it's taking off.
00:53And I'm thinking, okay, I know she's really smart.
00:59And I know that she's got a huge imagination.
01:02I love these two things.
01:04But if that rocket just goes straight to the moon,
01:07I'm not buying it.
01:08And as I'm reading it, the rocket's going up
01:12and then everything goes wrong and starts to fall backwards.
01:16And I'm like, yes, I like this story.
01:21Now save her somehow.
01:23Do something.
01:24And suddenly you have the audience.
01:27And if you can get the audience to want something,
01:31you have power.
01:32And suddenly the audience wants whatever magic you can bring into it
01:38to bring that girl to the moon.
01:41And as I'm reading the script, I'm feeling, I don't know,
01:47when I was a kid, I just believed in things that you couldn't see.
01:54I still am that way as an adult.
01:57This story really touched me.
01:59I feel like I get Fei-Fei.
02:01She believes the impossible is possible.
02:05That's kind of me.
02:13I think that there is a drive in every one of us
02:22to see ourselves accomplish something that maybe we look at ourselves
02:29and we don't believe that that's possible.
02:31And to have role models to look at and say, no,
02:35that person did it.
02:38Fei-Fei is a real blend of her two parents.
02:43That her dad sees things in a very scientific, practical way.
02:48Fei-Fei is incredibly intelligent.
02:51She's also like her mom who has this imagination that's just as strong
03:00and clear as the science.
03:02And it's together both of those that inspire her to build a rocket to the moon
03:10to meet a goddess that lives on the dark side of the moon.
03:15I mean, this is crazy, but it happens.
03:18And I think that sometimes our dreams seem crazy, but it can happen.
03:29Netflix is a really unique studio in that there isn't a house style.
03:37There's a leaning into each creator's personal vision.
03:46And at the beginning, those were the words that Melissa Cobb and Pei-Lynn really talked about.
03:57Like, no, we want you to tell your movie.
04:00And it was really true.
04:01I mean, we did this film in amazing speed.
04:06We were the first ones in this little Netflix animation studio.
04:10Jenny amazingly created out of concrete floors this whole little animation studio
04:17and brought everybody together.
04:19And we, within four months, five months, had the entire movie up with the eight songs written,
04:28storyboarded.
04:29Like Kathy said, everything was happening really fast.
04:32She had to record everything.
04:34There was this confidence that this was going to stick.
04:40This was going to, this was our film.
04:44And in a remarkable length of time, we've actually been able to, with that kind of momentum,
04:51accomplish this.
04:52And even when the coronavirus hit, we were in the deep into one of the most difficult phases
05:00of the film, and suddenly we all had to exit the building, and we didn't skip a beat.
05:08We continued to work all the way through.
05:11There's certain destiny to this film that is unstoppable, just like the story.
05:19I have a strange belief that the character exists before Robin.
05:28And it's the experience that I have when I'm doing a drawing.
05:33You start searching and searching, and it might look like the right character, but it's not.
05:39It's not until you see that character emerge and you feel like, there she is.
05:47That's her.
05:48And for Feifei, it was just like that, where you feel like, oh, I know this girl.
05:56Now I recognize her.
05:58There she is.
05:59And this is how it's been on all the different characters that I've animated.
06:05And you are really, as I said, animating what is going on inside her.
06:13She's got this little bunny bungee that thinks she's the most awesome human bull on the planet
06:21and believes in everything that Feifei believes in.
06:25And it's great to have a sidekick like that.
06:28We all need a sidekick like that.
06:33And at a certain point, though, you try to describe in dialogue, in storyboards, in every way possible
06:43to communicate the emotions.
06:46And finally, you realize, you know, what I really have to have is song.
06:52Song is the thing that lifts a movie to another level.
07:03Song is the thing that brings us to a super proud film organisation of motorsoses like that.
07:03Tell me the whole thing that hits my soul if you find theium and thedasmi.
07:04Who sings the whole thing thatices like that is super great in
07:04Grazie a tutti.
