00:05There were several points during the whole process where I thought, this is madness.
00:10So it was a whole new way of filming for us.
00:13One that we discovered on day.
00:16My name is Todd Yellen.
00:19Part of the excitement of working at Netflix is constantly inventing what is internet TV.
00:25There's a lot of responsibility because we are innovating on this whole new form.
00:31And so one of the things we started talking about is interactive content.
00:35We tried a couple of kids' specials.
00:37Then it was time to roll up our sleeves and go, how about if we did something bigger?
00:40How about we did it for adults?
00:42Now we had to find the right story and the right partners for an adult interactive adventure.
00:51Netflix asked us if we'd be interested in doing an interactive story.
00:55ever.
00:56My initial thought was, no, no, I'll do that.
00:59I think we only wanted to do it if we thought it was adding an extra layer thematically.
01:04We didn't really want it to feel like it was just a gimmick.
01:08And then annoyingly, I had an idea that would fit.
01:12How about if we did a story about fascinating new technology that's around fascinating new technology?
01:19Black Mirror is the perfect show for interactive storytelling.
01:22When I started out, I thought, well, this will be fairly straightforward.
01:24I'm sure I'll have to draw a flow chart at one point.
01:27Cut to several months later, it kind of exponentially started to balloon.
01:33Charlie got enamored of the butterfly effect.
01:35If you change this little thing, imagine what it would do here.
01:37But if you change this little thing, imagine what it would do here.
01:39To really understand how it all fits together needed whole new tools to be invented.
01:49We had a script quite late and it was important because the script had to be refined and refined and
01:54refined.
01:55But what happened was it got refined and refined and refined.
02:00It's the biggest editing challenge of my career.
02:03There's so many options that it's not that straightforward just viewing the cut from beginning to end.
02:08There is so many flows that could take some time.
02:11Marilyn Kirby, who's our astonishing script supervisor.
02:14Eventually, Marilyn and I ended up sharing brain.
02:16Because there's different timelines of stories, action gets repeated.
02:20But it gets repeated either slightly differently or it's part of a sequence where the beginning of it is different
02:25or the end of it is different.
02:26It becomes as much a filmmaking process as a software development process and we don't have all the answers.
02:33The fact that we're combining technology and design and innovation with incredible global storytelling
02:40really leads to exciting experiences like Bandersnatch.
02:43It's very, very Black Mirror.
02:45It's got a lot of different Black Mirror instruments all playing at once and it does feel that it works.
