Rugby legend Dale ‘Chief’ McIntosh has called on the government to step in to help struggling Welsh rugby clubs cope with soaring energy costs.

Speaking on the Beyond the Breakdown podcast, hosted by former Welsh international Richard Parks, McIntosh highlighted the difficulties faced by grassroots clubs, including Brecon RFC, where he coached for three years between 2022 and 2025.

00:00It's not an easy job keeping a club afloat.
00:02In relation to the economical side of things, it's sad.
00:07It's sad, you know, I've been in Brecon and we've had to move training because
00:13we can't afford the lights and we can't afford energy bills for the showers and all that.
00:17We've had to put showers on timers on a Tuesday on training days and match day
00:24because we can only kind of have the showers warm for that winter.
00:28You know, it is sad and a lot of clubs are going under.
00:34I know up the bull, we're struggling big times.
00:37And it's a bull now.
00:38Yeah, and it's a bull and, you know, buses and don't get me wrong.
00:42It's not the buses' fault.
00:43They've got to pay as well.
00:45You know, the economy has gone through.
00:47It's just tough for clubs nowadays and we can't keep going back to the WRU
00:52and asking for money and this and that.
00:54What I would like is probably the government to step in
00:57and probably get some kind of discount for these energy bills and that
01:01because they're the cripplers at the moment.
01:04because how I see it is if your kid's playing rugby or doing a sport,
01:10okay, that he's not paying an arm and leg for,
01:15we're keeping not just those kids motivated, not just the country motivated,
01:20but we're keeping them healthy, mate.
01:21Absolutely.
01:21Absolutely.
