00:03I play a guy who works for Interpol
00:05who's completely obsessed with trying to bring down this huge bank
00:08which he believes to be totally corrupt
00:10and literally travel the whole world in pursuit of this bank
00:18It's a fictional bank, it's the world's, you know, it's the third biggest bank in the world
00:24and we believe they're involved in all sorts of inappropriate activities
00:28you know, money laundering, you know, buying arms, involved in conflicts around the world
00:34and it's about me and Naomi Watts' character who's a DA in New York
00:41trying to pursue this bank and bring them to justice
00:51Well, weirdly, you know, Eric started to write the script five, six years ago
00:55we finished shooting a year and a half ago
00:56so it's only in the last year it's become incredibly timely
00:59like, you know, some of the questions that the film poses are, you know
01:03can you trust the bank, are they totally sound institutions
01:08do they use people's money appropriately
01:10and they've become the big questions that people have been asking for the last few months
01:23Yes, it was about, he's a very fallible human being
01:26you know, he's a guy whose obsession is at the cost of everything else in his life
01:29and it was very important not to be
01:32he's not a typical sort of heroic leading man in that way
01:36he's much more, you know, he's got much more weaknesses than that
01:40but there is something heroic about him in terms of how far he's prepared to go in pursuit of this
01:45huge corporation
01:54It took a long time as well and it bled, the whole thing bled through the whole shoot
01:59because we shot in three stages, they did an exact replica, to scale, of the Guggenheim in Berlin
02:06so we shot in that for a few weeks
02:07then they built a whole set of just the ground floor lobby area, which we shot in
02:11and then at the end of the movie we'd gone in the real place
02:13so it felt like that scene was an ever-present in the making of the film
02:24Well the only place I hadn't been before was Istanbul and that was pretty incredible
02:28and we found just incredible locations within these places
02:31so it's one thing to go to Istanbul but then to be on the roofs of the Grand Bazaar
02:35which I don't think anyone had ever filmed on before
02:37which is this incredible series of walkways on the roofs there with a mosque framed on either end
02:43and to go to New York and shoot on the streets and in the Guggenheim Museum
02:48which is one of the most iconic buildings in the world
02:51it was pretty incredible, you always feel very supported as an actor when you're shooting in great locations
03:00It was great, I mean I've known her on and off for quite a long time
03:04and we've nearly worked together a few times
03:06She's great, I mean she's not only a great actress, she's a really, really lovely girl
03:10and it was really great working with her
03:16I'm a huge fan of his, I really rate him highly
03:19I've loved every film he's done
03:21and he's a very rare director
03:25in that he's on top of every single aspect of making movies
03:28like he is a complete sort of workaholic, most great directors are
03:33but he's just got a grip on every single aspect of putting a film together
03:43I think that was the inspiration, yeah, from a bank from the 70s
03:46and Eric Singer would argue that everything in the movie
03:49however far-fetched some of it might appear
03:52is all completely based on an incident that really did happen
03:57but ultimately it's a fictional account
04:04Do you think the reason I wanted to do it is because it felt like it was inspired by those
04:09brilliant 70s political thrillers where they're really well researched
04:12they're well informed, they're intelligently written
04:15but they're big sweeping entertainments, you know
04:17they're like we travel the world, we have a 40-minute shootout
04:20and trash the Guggenheim Museum in New York
04:22and it's just marrying those two together
04:25and I think that makes for a very exciting movie
04:31I don't know what I'm shooting next
04:32I have another film coming out pretty close on the back of this called Duplicity
04:36which I did with Julia Roberts
04:38which was a really great experience
04:41and a really brilliant script by Tony Gilroy
