Japanese cyclists are pedaling around Taiwan to say thank you for disaster relief aid from 15 years ago.

The group is touring the country to express gratitude for the more than US$200 million donated by Taiwan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck eastern Japan on March 11, 2011. The disaster claimed nearly 20,000 lives and triggered a major nuclear crisis.

The tour began at the Presidential Office in Taipei and the cyclists have been visiting and interacting with local communities along the way. In Kaohsiung, the group stopped at a local temple and park with a statue honoring the late former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.

Many of the cyclists flew in especially for the tour, to demonstrate in person that Taiwan’s kindness hasn’t been forgotten.
