Reuters China correspondent Laurie Chen reports on Friday (July 17) from the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, where Chinese President Xi Jinping cast Beijing as the champion of a new global AI order, using China's premier tech conference to promote open-source technology and challenge U.S. influence over the rules governing the fast-moving sector. -Reuters

00:00So this year's World AI Conference is bigger than ever because President Xi Jinping has attended for
00:04the first time delivering a keynote speech at today's opening ceremony where he presented a
00:08vision of a new world order led by China without the US where China marshals a coalition of global
00:14South countries with which it can export and share its open source AI models and provide AI
00:20training and capacity building. Basically providing AI is what he calls a global public good to
00:25humanity instead of implementing you know export controls and proprietary closed source models
00:31like from OpenAI and Anthropoc. Xi is not only presenting a vision of China's global leadership
00:40over AI technology but also China's leadership in terms of standards governance and the norms in
00:47which you know everyone uses AI as an emerging technology. So at this year's WIC Huawei will
00:52be publicly displaying its Atlas 950 SuperPod competing cluster for the first time. So this
00:58is essentially what is called a super node where thousands of domestically made AI chips are kind
01:03of assembled and packaged together where they can run very very large AI inference and possibly training
01:09workloads as well. So this year a lot of the major Chinese AI labs will be relying on Huawei to
01:13produce
01:14more of these super node clusters for them to run their training and inference for their newest models
01:19and this demonstrates that China's domestic semiconductor industry is fast catching up to the U.S. and that
01:25China can bypass U.S. sanctions and export controls on advanced NVIDIA semiconductor chips.
