00:02This movie is not a biopic, it's what it gets called because it's about, because it's non-fiction, it's about
00:10someone real, but it's not a biography, it's not a, there isn't a cradle-to-grave structure to it.
00:17We zero in, the movie only has three scenes, and those three scenes are in real time. Real time, of
00:24course, means that 35 or 40 minutes for you in the audience is the same as 35 or 40 minutes
00:30for a character on the screen.
00:31It's three scenes, they all take place backstage before three product launches, the original Macintosh in 1984, then after Steve
00:43left Apple, his next venture, which was called Next, in 1988, and then 10 years after that, his return to
00:52Apple with the, basically the iMac, which is the Macintosh that we all use now, in 1998.
01:01And so it's just three scenes, and in those three scenes, all these conflicts that he has in his life
01:12get played out.
01:15The most important person I spoke to, I think, was Lisa, Steve's daughter.
01:23While Lisa was not willing to speak to Walter Isaacson, because her father was alive at the time, and she
01:29was concerned about alienating either her father, or her mother, or her stepmother, or perhaps all three, she was very
01:37generous with her time with me.
01:40And that, it was, after speaking to Lisa, that I felt like I had a way into the movie.
01:48It really boils down to was believing that being a genius and being a nice guy aren't two things in
01:59opposition to each other.
02:00That, that you can be both at the same time, and that if you can't be both at the same
02:06time, choose being a nice guy.
02:10Here's a great difference between a character and a person.
02:15A character in a movie, in a play, in a television show, can be unlikable and incredibly compelling at the
02:24same time.
02:25Chances are, if there's a person in life who you find unlikable, you don't want to spend time with him.
02:32What I did was, again, after reading Walter's book a lot, after reading everything that you could read about this
02:41guy and these people,
02:42and particularly after talking to everybody, I identified five conflicts in Steve's life with other people
02:59and found ways to play them out at these events.
03:05Steve Jams.
