00:20being a teacher-student relationship and then ultimately a friendship, I think is a good
00:28message to send out there in the world we're living in right now.
00:41I want to have a whole new way of presenting myself as Nicolas Cage in filmmaking and that
00:52means going to Bangkok, having a Thai crew, having Chinese filmmakers and letting them
00:59do to me what they think will fit within their vision, their world.
01:04That's brand new.
01:06I mean, I'm just giving myself over to their vision and hopefully they'll reinvent me.
01:12So that's what I find really stimulating about this.
01:22I think this potentially will go further than the original because of the cross-cultural
01:30aspects of the characters, getting to know one another.
01:33I think that will have more meaning ultimately in the long run.
01:37And I think that Danny and Oxide wanted to have another opportunity to recreate the film
01:45because I think that they had ideas to even strengthen the film from the original.
01:59And I was aware of the way they create from graphic novels, almost like they draw the movie.
02:06This movie's already made in their mind and now it's a process of just bringing it to life
02:15on film, but they've already seen it in their head.
02:18And it's like a photo play.
02:21It's like pictures being put together like a collage.
02:27It's not like anything I've done before.
02:36I would say that he is perhaps more evil, if you have to label him so-called evil, and
02:44that he's trying to find a way.
02:47As an American mercenary, he's coming out of his violence, his demons, because of Fawn,
02:59that my co-star, and her sensitivity, her kindness.
03:05Because of Thailand, because of Bangkok itself, the city is a huge character in the movie.
03:15The people in Thailand, the way they bless one another, the way they respect one another,
03:23how they keep their cool.
03:25This is all, I think, changing Joe's way of life, the way he sees things.
03:32He's becoming more interested in peace.
03:35And that's where the character goes into conflict here, because it's not his nature.
03:41He really can't be peaceful.
03:51The thing I like most about Joe is his international presence.
03:59I'm trying as an actor, and as a human being, to be more international.
04:04I'm trying not to be national.
04:07I want to meet people from all over the world, and I want to receive them well, and I want
04:12to learn from them, and I think that the fact that Joe is here, even though he's working
04:17in this horrible job, he's still interacting with people from other cultures, and that's
04:25what intrigued me.
