00:30As we'll see Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers versus Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
00:41Still a bit warm here in Florida, but really all things considered, a wonderful fall afternoon for football here in
00:47Tampa at Raymond James Stadium.
00:49Brandon Godden, Charles Davis with you from our broadcast perch.
00:52And Charles, as we get this thing started, what are you going to be keeping your eye on?
00:55Special teams, field position is always a big determiner in a ball game.
01:00Who sets their offense up for success the best?
01:03That team will win the game.
01:31Certainly happy to have you along.
01:34Chase McLaughlin has it on the tee and off we go here in Tampa.
01:38From a couple yards deep, he'll bring it out of the end zone.
01:42And he won't quite make it to the 25.
01:54Here's the Chiefs offense for their first possession, and it's Patrick Mahomes at quarterback.
01:59And when you think of Patrick Mahomes, you start to think about all of his attributes, and you realize very
02:03quickly, you can't just put him into one box.
02:06No matter how the game proceeds, no matter what is needed, he tends to have an answer for it and
02:12plays accordingly.
02:35Mahomes now wasted time.
02:38He'll throw.
02:39It's Kelsey on the ground.
02:44Only a couple for him there on the game's first play, and it's second down.
02:48I know when you've got a top tight end like this, you want to get him involved, but when you
02:51do, you're hoping for more than that.
02:53You certainly are.
02:53You've got to try and get him some space where he can make a play downfield, or at least an
02:58opportunity for some rack yardage, right?
03:00That run after catch.
03:03Play action.
03:04Now it's Mahomes.
03:05Mahomes.
03:06He finds Watson.
03:08It's gone.
03:10And they work this well upfield across the 45.
03:1522 yards there.
03:16A first down.
03:19What an intelligent play as he found open grass and uncovered quickly.
03:23A nice clutch play to move the chains.
03:26The defense, they've got to do a much better job of accounting for these shorter routes.
03:45They'll run for the first time with Kareem Hunt.
03:48And a strong run that time as he's across midfield and down to the 43.
03:54Another strong gain on the last two plays.
03:56They've moved it a combined 33 yards.
03:59How best to describe that one?
04:01I'd say right down Broadway on that run.
04:03That's straight ahead running.
04:04I think that that might be something we see a lot of between the tackles today.
04:08Well, he's enjoying things so far here this afternoon.
04:11Sees a crease and bursts through it for a solid game.
04:16So from Buccaneer territory now, it's first and 10 at the 43.
04:24Mahomes now to throw.
04:26The tight end Kelsey has it over the middle.
04:29And brought down but able to get it to their 30-yard line.
04:34That's good for a first down.
04:36His second catch of the opening drive.
04:38That early game script that they drew up is working pretty well here on this first drive.
04:43Already in field goal range, Charles knocking on the door of the red zone.
04:46You know, Brandon, when we met with the coaching staff, they kind of predicted that they would come out firing
04:51like this.
04:52I think you and I were a little skeptical it would be this easy.
04:55But they certainly knew what they were doing in scouting, in preparation, and understanding what their team was capable of.
05:01He did an okay job of absorbing the hit.
05:04Just couldn't secure the football through the catch.
05:07And he was right there on the spot and forcing the incompletion.
05:09That's something defenders work on all the time.
05:11If you're there, make the contact.
05:14But continue to work your way through the receiver so that you can't possess the football and turn it into
05:19a catch.
05:21Into the hands of Smith-Schuster on the crossing pattern.
05:2512 yards there as they keep this drive rolling.
05:28It's another first down.
05:30And the pocket's been protected pretty good here so far on the opening drive.
05:33We always talk about confidence in runners and catchers and quarterbacks.
05:36How about the protection detail?
05:38They're not allowing anyone near the guy throwing the football.
05:46On first down, they'll run with Hunt.
05:49Hunt. And he'll go down here at the 12-yard line.
05:55It's a six-yard pickup, but it gets him to second and four.
05:59That's a strong pickup right there on first down.
06:01And as this drive goes on, we're seeing an offensive line and running game imposing its will.
06:14Counting down toward the midway point in quarter one.
06:19Kick, kick, kick.
06:21Kick, kick, kick.
06:23One second down, right back to Hunt.
06:25And he'll be brought down this time at the five-yard line.
06:29Seven yards on the pickup there.
06:31And now they'll have it first and goal.
06:33A couple of nice carries back-to-back here, establishing the ground game a bit.
06:37Yeah, these are bare-bones runs now.
06:39I mean, they're getting substantial yardage, the kind of yards you're looking for.
06:42Let's go ahead and use a cliche.
06:44Stay ahead of the change, right?
06:45Five or more yards each time.
06:47That's what you're looking for in setting a tone and getting your offensive line going.
06:51Good sign on the opening drive.
06:54They'll manage to break and tackle and get this forward for a couple.
06:58It'll be second down.
07:00Here's where we need to see some tenacity from this defense
07:03because they've been pushed right down the field on this opening drive.
07:06They've got to find some way to push back, and that's a good first step.
07:12The home's going to throw.
07:14And that's caught.
07:16It's Kelsey.
07:17Touchdown, Kansas City.
07:20Two yards on the touchdown there.
07:22And the Chiefs are on the board first here on the road in Tampa.
07:29That was a really good opening drive on a number of fronts.
07:32Ten plays, very methodical, set the tone.
07:35So you know right now, if you're on the defensive side of the ball,
07:38you're on the sidelines saying,
07:40okay, what do we have to dial up in order to get off the field a lot faster?
07:44Because both sides are out there for ten plays,
07:47but one side comes off energized,
07:49and the other side comes off with some questions.
07:56Extra point by Butker is on target,
07:58and that makes the score 7-0.
08:02A ten-play drive that time.
08:05And it culminates in a Travis Kelsey touchdown.
08:31Now after the touchdown, here's Butker on to kick it away.
08:42And he'll be stopped up at the 25.
08:52That didn't take long to see our first penalty of the game, did it?
08:55We always talk about everyone wanting to get into the game in a hurry.
08:59Officials did as well.
09:07So the special team's penalty cost some yardage there as they come out on first and ten.
09:14Now a give up the middle.
09:16This is White.
09:19And he's going to be taken down here with a penalty flag on the field.
09:30So a decent game there on the play, but that all gets wiped out with a penalty.
09:34Well, that's a setback, but all the good play callers, they just move on.
09:38They find something else in the playbook that can attack this defense,
09:41and they go right back on the offensive on this play.
09:52Mayfield looks to throw.
09:54And a dangerous throw there, incomplete.
09:57He threw that into coverage.
09:59It was nearly intercepted.
10:02I think he's got to be careful not to force anything into coverage right there.
10:05There weren't really any throwing lanes.
10:07But the best part for him, he's got second and third down to fall back on.
10:11Here's a second and eight.
10:19They'll go up the middle with White.
10:21And he works it across the 25 before being tackled.
10:26Ten yards there and a Buccaneer first down.
10:29That was good, tough running right up the middle.
10:31And if the defense can't penetrate and make him slow his pace or change direction,
10:36that's often the end result.
11:00They go right back to White here on first down.
11:03They'll get a yard.
11:04That's all as they get him down at the 28.
11:08Oh, there's plenty of traffic waiting for him up the middle.
11:11But give him credit.
11:12He tried barreling through anyway.
11:14They're fortunate to get a yard out of that one.
11:19Ball on the 28-yard line.
11:21Here's second and nine.
11:27To throw, Mayfield.
11:31Out loud and the ball is caught by Godwin.
11:34And he'll be out of bounds right at the 40.
11:3812 yards there as they keep this drive rolling.
11:40It's another first down.
11:42Godwin with a nice grab there.
11:44And he's been a consistent weapon for this Buccaneers offense,
11:47although a bit unheralded.
11:49He's eclipsed a 1,000-yard mark for each of his last three seasons.
11:52And his ability to make plays on all three levels is invaluable
11:56for not just his franchise, but his quarterback, Baker Mayfield.
12:03Mayfield now looking to throw on first down.
12:06And that went too far in front.
12:08He couldn't reel it in.
12:10It's incomplete.
12:11Offense was moving it a little bit.
12:13Had them back on their heels,
12:14but they earned a brief pause by forcing the incompletion.
12:18That gives them a quick chance to regroup
12:19and try and mount a stand before they're backed up even further.
12:23Second and ten.
12:29Here's Mayfield.
12:31Here's White.
12:32They set up the screen.
12:36Four yards the gain, and it'll bring up a third down.
12:53After 1-7-0 on the A-Sports.
13:01Second quarter now in Tampa Bay.
13:04It's the Buccaneers in control of the football
13:06as they've got it with a third down coming up.
13:19They are in need of six yards here if they hope to move the chains.
13:27And again, it's Mayfield.
13:29Finding room at midfield.
13:31That's over the middle and caught by the rookie.
13:38And he is going to have a Bucs first down
13:40as they're able to get the third down conversion.
13:44Well, that's one way and a good way to get things going offensively.
13:48One play in, and they're already on the move.
13:51The defense, they're hoping that's not a sign of things to come
13:54as this game unfolds.
14:02So now 1st and 10 in Chiefs territory at the 46.
14:11They run straight ahead here with White.
14:13He takes this for about 6 down inside the 40.
14:18They've created a nice sustained drive off of plays like that.
14:21A nice strong run there.
14:22It keeps them advancing the ball.
14:30Ball on the 39.
14:32Here's the 2nd down and 4.
14:36On the draw, it's White.
14:38And a short game there down to the 37-yard line.
14:43He may be a bit undersized compared to the modern-day NFL defensive tackle.
14:47But what he lacks in size, he definitely makes up for
14:49in his ability to make tackles in the run game as well.
14:55Now on 3rd down, an extra DB out there for the Chiefs.
15:00From the gun, Mayfield.
15:02And there's a short one taken in by Otten.
15:06And the play goes nowhere, losing yardage back near the 40 at the 39.
15:13And we constantly talk about people being on the same page.
15:16In this situation, the two of them saw the play with the same eyes.
15:20They understood where the open spaces were going to be.
15:23And they found a way to get there to pick up a new set of downs.
15:36So coming on now is the field goal unit.
15:38They're going to try for three.
15:40And he'll need all the leg he's got here.
15:42This will be from 56 yards out.
15:47And he missed it.
15:48It's no good.
15:53And this will stay at a seven-point game.
16:04Kansas City taking the field for their second drive.
16:07They'll be looking to duplicate that first drive,
16:09the one that got them that 7-0 lead.
16:12Of course they would.
16:13Look, they're on the road.
16:14So getting the 7-0 lead was huge for them, right?
16:17Imagine getting up two touchdowns on the road,
16:20taking the crowd out of the game.
16:21It'd be ideal.
16:28The Chiefs offense about set to begin this drive.
16:31They have to be thrilled with that first drive.
16:33They got them the touchdown.
16:34Now they'll be looking to make it a two-score advantage here on the road.
16:37And you know they spent all week in practice, in meetings,
16:40talking about taking an early advantage.
16:42Being the road team, going up the score,
16:44that takes the crowd out of the game
16:46and puts some doubt in the minds of their opponents.
16:49That next teammate used to tell me all the time,
16:51I hate experienced quarterbacks.
16:53Because no matter what, you really can't hide what you're doing.
16:56And I think that right there, he knew right away
16:58where the blitz was coming from,
17:00where his primary guy was going to be,
17:02and he ended up going to a secondary target for a nice game.
17:05I was just going to ask you, that wasn't the primary target.
17:07He's so good at that, isn't he?
17:09I think he knew right away that he wasn't going to get to his primary guy.
17:12I think he read that as soon as he got to the line of scrimmage.
17:15Knew where the pressure was going to come from.
17:17And said, I know how to beat that.
17:19And that's what he did.
17:20Good yardage there on first down.
17:22Exactly what you want.
17:23Get yourself set up to keep making first downs.
17:25Keep the clock running.
17:27And if they're smart, you're starting to milk the clock.
17:29No hurry before you run your second down play.
17:32One second down, right back to home.
17:34And he works it to the 30-yard line here, right at the 30.
17:38Four yards, the pickup, first down.
17:41So finally, a first down run.
17:44The offensive line has got to feel a whole lot better about themselves
17:47because I think they're starting to wonder,
17:48were we ever going to solve this defense
17:50and be able to do what we like to do,
17:52which is run the football.
17:54Check that, check that.
17:56We're going to do the two right here.

18:02On play action, it's Mahomes.
18:04Throwing the out route here, and it's complete to Kelsey.
18:08And inside the 20 before he's brought down.
18:11Give him 13 yards there at a Kansas City first down.
18:15Another nice play there.
18:16They've gotten down into the red zone in no time at all.
18:19That's what this offense can do when they get on a roll.
18:21And now they're set up for the first and 10.
18:24Two minutes on the clock.
18:26Second quarter, 7-0 ball game.
18:38So from the 17 now, here's a first and 10.
18:46Here's Mahomes to throw.
18:48Over the middle, complete.
18:50It's Watson.
18:51And the result here, a pickup of eight.
18:53Leaves him with two to go on second down.
18:55Eight yards on the field.
18:58Brings it second and two.
19:00At the books, 9-0 ball.
19:11Two yards left on second down from the nine.
19:17To throw, it's Mahomes.
19:20Got a man over the middle, worthy.
19:23And the Chiefs are going to have a first and goal as the tackle is made at about the five.
19:28And defensively, they were in zone coverage there.
19:31Do you have to be a little careful you're losing, playing against a good quarterback like he is,
19:35to not play too much zone?
19:37Yeah, you have to be careful about how much time you're giving up.
19:39I think it's a good point you just brought up.
19:41So maybe if you still want to play zone, you go to a zone blitz game.
19:45And you can drop.
19:45And that's caught.

19:57And the Chiefs have taken a two-touchdown lead now.
20:03And, Charles, they continue to have trouble stopping him as he's into the end zone yet again.
20:08Yeah, that's multiple series now that have ended with him in the end zone.
20:11A perfect plan on how to utilize him best when they get in close.
20:21Extra point by Butker is on target.
20:24And it's now 14 to nothing.
20:28So that drives seven plays in length.
20:31And it culminates in a Travis Kelsey touchdown.
20:57Now after the touchdown, here's Butker on to kick it away.
21:04From a yard or two deep, here comes a return.
21:08And he's able to get this across the 20, but not by much as he's marked down officially at the
21:1321.
21:16Tampa Bay, they're getting ready to set up shop here for their second drive.
21:20And, Charles, we'll see what they can do here.
21:22Not a ton of time left, but enough certainly to get points out of this drive.
21:26And they need him right now because they're trailing.
21:29Yeah, and this is exactly why you practice a two-minute drill all through camp and at least one practice
21:34each week before a game.
21:36A minute left, more than enough time to string a few completions together, reach the end zone, and then make
21:41that walk back to the locker room.
21:42Just a little more animated.
21:48Mayfield on first down.
21:51He gets it over the middle to Palmer.
21:54Now the Bucs going to use the first of their timeouts as they'll stop him with a tick under a
21:59minute to go before half.
22:13From the 32 now, here's first and 10.
22:19From the shotgun, it's Mayfield.
22:22That's complete to his receiver, Godwin.
22:25The Bucs going to go ahead and use the second of their timeouts as they get the stoppage with a
22:30little over 50 seconds to go in the first half.
22:45From the 41, this is second and a yard.
22:51Now a shotgun snap as they'll look to throw.
22:55Open man, it's Palmer.
22:58And he'll be brought down with a first down as the tackle's made at the Chiefs' 43.
23:03And give him 17 yards that time as that'll move the chains.
23:08Well, these guys have definitely been outplayed in the first half.
23:10I like their countenance.
23:11I like the way that they haven't panicked out there, the way they're carrying themselves.
23:15They're starting to move the ball.
23:17And what you have to do, maintain your poise and start to put together some drives.
23:21And he gets this inside the 35-yard line.
23:26They get 10 more there, and I believe that'll be enough for another first down.
23:30It will.
23:34Now a timeout signaled for, and they'll get it with 10 seconds to go before halftime.
23:56So even though it's first down, here's the field goal unit on now to try to get three before halftime.
24:01They'll put it down right at the 40, so call this a 50-yard attempt.
24:05And his kick is indeed good.
24:09And they will get themselves on the board here at 14-3.
24:16Well, still trailing here, but they do get the late field goal.
24:20Now their defense will try to keep this score right where it is heading into the locker room.
24:24Yeah, and trailing it to break.
24:25You obviously don't want to go in off of a negative play.
24:28Give them credit for that one.
24:30Finding a way to put points on the board.
24:32Give them any type of a spark, anything to build off of, as they try and plan a comeback.
24:45So six seconds, all that remains in this first half is the kick is away.
24:56And they'll start this drive just across the 30.
24:59Pretty nice work on the return.
25:15The KC offense out of the huddle, ready for their next drive.
25:19And with Mahomes under center, anything's possible.
25:22Watch out for the deep ball.
25:24And he will perhaps get back to the line of scrimmage, but that's it.

26:57In the first half, they struggled a little bit to keep pace offensively, CD.

27:02So how do they make some changes coming out of the locker room?
27:05Well, they've studied what they did in the first half.
27:08They've seen what the defense has thrown at them.
27:10Now they want to have a plan of attack against it.
27:12So you come out, you're not going to get all the points back on one drive.
27:16But get started on it.
27:17Start chopping into that lead.
27:19And maybe it'll inspire your defense to help out as well.
27:24A run to begin the second half with White.
27:27And able to break one tackle, but then quickly brought down.
27:31But a nice little gain.
27:33A solid run on first down.
27:35Gain of seven.
27:36Leaves him with a second and three.
27:38You know how it really fires up offensive linemen?
27:40When the guy that is carrying the ball behind them
27:43can create his own space and break a tackle along the way.

28:08Oh, and the throw led him too much that time.
28:11It's incomplete.
28:12He shook his head right when he released that throw.
28:15He knew it was going to be a little off target.
28:17Yeah, the excitement got him on that one.

28:21And it would have been an easy throw.
28:24This offense in desperate need of a conversion
28:27as they come up on third down.

28:35And he's got a man complete.

28:43And that's the kind of play this offense needs
28:45to maybe kick them into gear a little bit.
28:47They've been stuck in neutral much of the game.
28:50Perhaps that can give them a little bit of confidence
28:52that big plays are out there.

29:20You've got to be impressed by the defensive front
29:22on reps like those.
29:24They were not being moved off the line,
29:26kept their shoulders square,
29:27and gave their teammates time to fight to the ball
29:29and limit that gain.

29:41It's caught by Mike Evans.
29:43And he'll be brought down with a first down
29:46as the tackle's made at the Chiefs' 37.

29:52I don't know what they talked about at halftime.

29:55They looked like a different team here in the third quarter.
29:57Yeah, I doubt that there were very many trash cans
29:59that got kicked over that type of a speech.
30:01I think what they did was they analyzed
30:02what worked in the first half, what didn't,
30:05and figured out a better game plan.

30:12but they're on the move.

30:19That's complete to Palmer.
30:21So give them five yards there on the pitch and catch,
30:24and that's going to bring up second down.
30:26Good throw, good catch, but I really like the route.
30:29The drag and being able to run away from defenders,
30:31hard to stick with them for that long.
30:33Yeah, better against man than zone, or?
30:36Better against man,
30:37because now you're running away from someone,
30:38and you're not running into a defensive player
30:41in another zone.
30:44Here's a second and five.

30:48Fire, fire, catch.

30:51He'll drop to throw.
30:53Here's a quick pass.
30:54He's got Chris Godwin,
30:56and he'll be brought down with a first down
30:59as the tackle's made at the Chiefs' 22-yard line.
31:02They picked up five yards last time.
31:03Now they double it and get ten here.
31:06It's taken a while for this offense to get going.
31:08A little creaky at the start,
31:10but they're oiled up now.
31:11A nice throw there,
31:12and they're really putting together a good drive.
31:17They will run with White out of the shotgun.
31:20And he can only manage to get a couple.

31:25Early downstuffs will put this offense
31:26in a precarious position.
31:27We know they're securing the point of attack,
31:29especially against the big-body guys
31:31in the middle of this day.
31:32It's got to be priority one.
31:46From the 20, here's the second and eight.
31:53They stay on the ground with White.
31:57And he'll take this close to a first down
32:00at the Chiefs' 14.
32:02Give him six yards on the carry.
32:04It's going to be third and three now.
32:05He had to fight for every yard on that run.
32:08Shook himself free of a tackle
32:09and kept fighting,
32:11even with the rest of the defense closing in on it.
32:13That's the kind of effort you'll take every single time.
32:16Here's third and three.
32:19They'll set up to throw.
32:21By rifles one, and that's going to be intercepted.
32:31And he will take this one home.
32:34It's a touchdown.
32:39Well, if there was any thought
32:40that this thing might turn around
32:42for this offense in the second half,
32:43I think those thoughts pretty well dashed
32:45after that interception return there.
32:47It just has not been a good outing
32:49for this unit whatsoever.
32:50There's no other way to say it.
32:52They've been overmatched,
32:53haven't performed to the level that they've needed.
32:55And that throw there's just going to contribute
32:57to this game getting out of hand.
33:09Butker now to add the extra point.
33:17And it's 21-3.
33:21So the defense creating some points,
33:24not only getting the interception,
33:26but then returning it to the end zone
33:27for the pick six.
33:57So they throw the pick six.
33:59They'll get another shot at it now
34:00as this one's in the air.
34:07And he'll get it up just past the 20
34:10as these guys will go to work
34:11at the 21-yard line.
34:16So out come the Bucs now.
34:18I kind of feel like they've reached
34:20a do-or-die point in this game, Charles.
34:22If they're going to try to pull off
34:24an impressive comeback,
34:25it has to start right here, right now.
34:27Yeah, now they've got a final chance
34:29to get out of this situation,
34:30but they also understand
34:32they've got to move the ball
34:33and move it fast.
34:34In addition, they need to save as much time
34:37so they can get two more possessions.
34:40Now Mayfield and the Bucs come up
34:41on first and 10 at their own 21.
34:47After the pick six,
34:48they go right back to the air.
34:51And his throw is incomplete.
34:54Love his pocket awareness,
34:55able to slip out of the sack.
34:57But once you take your eyes off the receivers,
34:59once your eyes come down
35:00and you see the rush,
35:02hard to get back downfield
35:04and find an open target.
35:05Fortunate.
35:06That one just wound up
35:07as an incomplete pass.
35:08The second and 10 now
35:09as we roll along
35:10in the third quarter from Tampa.

35:17And this one incomplete.
35:19Too much contact to hold on to that one
35:21and it's third down.
35:23We saw this a lot in the first half
35:25and it continues.
35:26These receivers just not able
35:27to get much separation.
35:28So that means they have to win
35:29the 50-50 balls.

37:10no signs of backing down,

37:14I think they keep taking their shots.
37:16They've seen blown leads
37:18happen throughout this league.
37:19They don't want to fall victim
37:20to it themselves.

40:37as a general rule
40:38that if someone does it to them,
40:39you won't hear people protest out of them.
40:41That's just who they are.

40:52at their own 15.
40:57They'll try and start this drive in the air.
41:01That's taken in by Palmer.
41:03And he's taken down,
41:05but not before he gets this

41:13I can put my defensive cap on right now,
41:15and I know they're saying,

41:22I think they let their guard down

41:26Sometimes when you're trying
41:27not to give up bigger plays,
41:28you don't react as fast as you should
41:30on other throws.

41:41And this is why you work on your tackling.
