00:00So, what challenges did you face in creating this Dragon Ball world from, you know, all the TV shows and
00:08the books, et cetera, onto the big screen?
00:11Well, the biggest challenge probably is trying to condense an incredibly rich manga into a two-hour movie.
00:23You know, there are so many, I'm sure there are so many fans that have characters that they loved, and
00:30they're saying to themselves, how come this guy is not in the movie?
00:33You know, but we only have a certain amount of time.
00:39We also wanted to, you know, present this movie to people who aren't familiar with Dragon Ball, and to allow
00:46them the accessibility to watch it, understand what's going on, and hopefully love it so much that they'll go back
00:52and read the mangas.
00:54Were you a big fan of, I mean, did you follow it?
00:57Yeah, I did not know too much about Dragon Ball before I was introduced to it by Fox, but they
01:04did send me, before I started, they sent me the mangas,
01:08and after reading them, I became a really big fan.
01:12So what aspects of the original story will we find in the movie?
01:16Well, I think...
01:18What's brand new, you know?
01:19Well, the characters, of course, are from the original manga, but the movie itself is pretty new in terms of
01:28the story,
01:28because, you know, we had to sort of find a way for the audience to connect to this world without
01:37throwing them in the deep end, in the beginning, you know?
01:40So we created a story that doesn't really exist in the mangas, and follow Goku's sort of discovery of himself,
01:49and how he became a hero through the movie.
01:51Do you think people can relate to Goku?
01:55I think so, because Goku, at his heart, is this really, really nice, innocent, open person.
02:03And I think, you know, I'm attracted to people like that, and I think people want those kind of people
02:10to be able to succeed.
02:11I think most people want to feel like that's who they are.
02:14He's a bit of an outcast, isn't he?
02:16Yeah, he's a bit of an outcast, but at his heart, he's a very genuine person.
02:23Can you talk about the casting?
02:25I mean, it was a great international cast, actually.
02:27Can you talk about how all that came together, and how difficult was it to find Goku?
02:33It was really difficult to cast this movie, because I wanted a very multicultural cast.
02:42I think that's what the Dragon Ball world really is.
02:45Because it has, you know, it's a world that doesn't look at race or the boundary lines that we create
02:53to be in the world.
02:55The world embraces everybody.
02:58So, it was, not only do I want the multicultural cast, I wanted to, the characters had to sort of
03:06fit into the characters that were in a manga.
03:12At least the characteristics of who they were, you know.
03:15So, we went all over the world to cast this movie, and it took us a long time, but I
03:21think it was well worth it.
03:23And there's a character, Super Saiyan, who wasn't in this movie, but will we see him in future installments?
03:31If there is a future installment, I'm sure that's who we'll see.
03:34So, has the script been written, or?
03:36There have been scripts.
03:37All the cast seem to think there has been.
03:39They're like, oh, we've read it, or they're all on board.
03:42They, they have, I know that Fox has had scripts written that are sort of the Dragon Ball Z version
03:50of the Dragon Ball movies.
03:52So, we'll see whether we ever get a chance to make them.
03:56Can you talk about, for people who don't know, who are not familiar with the story, like myself, it was,
04:01it was very new to me.
04:03Like, what do the seven balls, what do they represent?
04:05Well, I, I, I don't know if they represented any specific, each ball represented each, any specific things.
04:13I know that, uh, altogether, I think they represent sort of, uh, um, a wish for, uh, for the ability
04:22to, to, uh, it's a wish fulfillment, uh, object.
04:26Like, almost like a genie in a lamp.
04:27Uh, I think it represents, uh, the opportunity to change, change something that, you know, as, as small as, uh,
04:39you know, get a better boyfriend, which is in the manga what, what Bowman wants, uh, to, to, to, to,
04:46yeah, to being able to change the world, you know.
04:49Okay, last one, my last question to you is, um, if you had one wish, what would that be?
04:53Oh, my God, that's so hard.
04:55Um, you can be selfish, it's fine.
04:57I know, you know, everybody wants to say, hey, I want world peace and all that, but I think, uh,
05:03I would love to be able to, to fly.
05:04That's what I want to do.
05:05Okay, thank you very much.
05:07Thank you.
