00:10When I first read
00:11the script, I
00:13realized
00:16she's the kind of
00:17woman that
00:21I guess
00:22you just aspire to be
00:23because she's all goodness and all
00:26trusting, forgiveness,
00:27all love.
00:30And I thought
00:31I mean, it's kind of difficult
00:34when you think, gosh,
00:35how can I play a character that's this
00:38spiritual and
00:39loving and pure
00:42and then I kind of realized that
00:44the way into her
00:45was her love for her children.
00:48I thought, okay, well
00:49if I do that then
00:53I think
00:53that's kind of
00:56the key
00:57to finding
00:58who she is.
01:00So that's where I started.
01:01And then I also, I watched a lot of movies from like
01:04the 1930s and 40s.
01:06Terry asked me to watch.
01:07I watched a lot of Lorne Bacall he asked me to
01:11because there was a different way of talking.
01:13He had said to me,
01:15which I find is true and I find that I do this a lot,
01:17that the way we speak nowadays
01:19is we speak so fast
01:21because we're afraid someone's going to cut us off
01:23so we kind of like talk and there's this
01:25kind of rambling thing
01:27but if you watch movies back from
01:301930s or 40s
01:31there's this confidence
01:33and directness
01:36and it's very slow
01:38the way they speak
01:40which is actually the way Terry speaks.
01:41in real life he's very slow
01:43and
01:45direct
01:47but you don't expect it
01:49to take, you know, as long as it takes
01:52but you're listening at every word.
01:55So
01:55those were the places that I started.
02:01Well, it is tough because
02:03you think in a way it's sometimes it's like
02:05acting with a straight jacket on
02:07because there's those scenes where
02:10Mr. O'Brien Brad
02:13could be doing something
02:14that's
02:16not necessarily the most generous or kind
02:19especially to the boys
02:20and me being who I am
02:21I want to just go up and stop.
02:24And because a lot of it, a lot of the movie
02:26the way we filmed is so
02:29I mean Terry gives us
02:30the lines but then he also adds lines
02:32as we're filming
02:33and then you're
02:37you're encouraged to follow anything
02:38that you want to do.
02:41When I first met Brad
02:43it was right before we did the
02:46the courtship section of the movie
02:48so Brad and I were like
02:50hey nice to meet you
02:50and then all of a sudden we're on the grass
02:52and you know we're kind of like playing with each other's hair
02:54and he was incredibly nice and funny
02:56and charming and smart
02:58and just
