00:19when we were doing Vanilla Sky
00:20and I reached out
00:23to try and use some of the Sigur Rós music
00:26and you were kind enough to open that door a little bit
00:28and we came charging through with many requests
00:32through the whole filming of the movie
00:34we were listening to your album and Sigur Rós stuff
00:36and Matt Damon just needed it like a drug
00:39he would be like, put on Sinking Friendships
00:43put on Go Do
00:44and he would act to it
00:47so at a certain point
00:48I had to get my courage up
00:50so I wrote you and said
00:51how do you feel about scoring a movie
00:53we sent you a script
00:55and the most amazing thing happened
00:57which I have to thank you for
00:58you really read the script
01:00and music started to come to you
01:02you trusted enough
01:04to start writing a theme
01:06and I've been meaning to ask you
01:07what was that process?
01:10when does music come to you?
01:11everything just works basically
01:13I get really inspired
01:15if I get new instruments
01:16and play something I haven't played before
01:18I get inspired
01:20and I usually write something new
01:22you've never done a score before
01:24never recorded a string section
01:27I always wanted to have a single voice
01:30and I always ended up leaning heavily on records
01:33trying to use records to create that mood
01:37but the dream was that you would be that voice
01:40and it happened so naturally
01:43we went into your office
01:45down the hall
01:46and you said
01:47let me play this for you
01:48and you had already put this theme
01:50on the very beginning of the movie
01:52to me it was perfect
01:53and it's never changed

02:10the movie is very much about a celebration of living
02:13you've accessed that so well
02:15do you feel in your own life
02:16you've had loss and renewal

02:30I think it's just
02:31you kind of get invested in
02:32the stuff you're doing at that time
02:34and like when you invest in that movie
02:37you're just like
02:38kind of surround yourself in the story
02:40and the characters
02:41and everything around that
02:42so you kind of like
02:43start to like
02:44you know
02:45yeah
02:46you invest a lot of time
02:47and like feelings in that
02:49so yeah
02:49in some ways
02:50you definitely feel with the characters and stuff
02:53you're kind of inviting
02:54with all the characters
02:56with the music you make
02:57but there's a very loving approach
02:58that you took to the story
