00:02I've been to the Congo, I made films in the Congo, I made films in Iraq, I was a war
00:07artist there.
00:08But there was a situation of, you know, what happened in our backyard? What's happened here?
00:14And I wanted to sort of make a movie on that as well.
00:19And what we did here, I think, is about a film of reflection, really, to reflect on our choices,
00:29and reflect on our past, and to reflect on what we think of ourselves as a nation, and what we
00:35have done.
00:40I never worked with actors before, and I just felt that to be absolutely honest with them,
00:45and truthful with them, was the best way.
00:48It's great when you can ask a producer a question, and you get a cast back immediately,
00:52you ask the art director something, and you get back immediately, it's wonderful.
00:56I mean, all these people are there to help you to make your movie.
00:59And it gets a situation where it's not your movie, as far as the director's movie, it's their movie, too.
01:04So there's a wonderful feeling that you feel sometimes, especially in this film, of course,
01:08the only film I've ever made, where we thought that we were doing it, rather than an individual doing it.
01:12And that's a kind of vibe or atmosphere I love.
01:18And a lot of people think, you know, he's this great guy who was doing the right thing, and he's
01:22smarter.
01:23So I want to sort of look at the left and the right of it all, and have the left
01:27and the right in one room having that kind of dialogue.
01:30And it's always two stones, you know, what you wanted to do in that situation is to make fire.
01:34What the third element is, obviously, within that sort of container situation of in that room,
01:39and to hold it for a moment, hold people's breath for a moment, in order to contemplate and think and
01:45reflect.
01:49I think cinema has a power beyond entertainment.
01:52I hope this film is entertaining.
01:54Yes, it is, not particularly uplifting in some ways, but possibly is in some ways.
01:59I think, actually, it is.
02:00It's not a comedy, but at the same time, I do think that we have a medium here,
02:04which is so sort of, is still one of the best mediums in the world,
02:09that can have some kind of effect beyond just for entertainment's sake.
