00:03kenara set, action!
00:06I knew it was Chuetel. I've been watching him for long time and I always felt that he
00:12was able to sort of reach that kind of performance and I knew that he could do it.
00:16I was born a free man. I get a kiss please, thank you, to the day I was kidnapped and
00:21sold into slavery.
00:24We had a pretty extraordinary script and at that point we got Chuetel Gverdu IV to commit
00:29a plain solomon
00:30if you want to survive
00:32do and say as little as possible
00:36but I don't want to survive
00:38I want to live
00:40Chiwetel got on board
00:41and there was never another solomon
00:42pick that cut, move along
00:44when I first read the script
00:47and the book
00:48I'd never read or seen anything like that in my life
00:59the book as a template is so useful
01:02as a way of trying to understand
01:03his character and his time
01:05master bought you here to work
01:06I don't want to hear a word out of none of you
01:09once you read solomon's autobiography
01:11it puts you in a certain mindset
01:12where you start to get a little glimpse
01:15into what he's going through
01:16and what he is seeing
01:18I originate from Canada
01:19I guess where that is
01:21well I know where Canada is
01:23I've been there myself
01:24well traveled for a slave
01:26once I started to see that
01:27to really feel what that emotional journey
01:30would mean for someone
01:31it's impossible to kind of lose it
01:32it's something that has really penetrated me
01:36went down to the river Jordan
01:39going to the plantations in the south
01:41and being in places where some of these things occurred
01:46that burning heat
01:49the violence that he sees occurred
01:51you do get a glimpse of what the day-to-day
01:54must have been like
01:55it's quite a thing
02:01Chiwetel hinges up the most profound empathy
02:03not just because of the situation
02:04there's something about him
02:05and what he transmits as an actor
02:07that's just very, very earnest
02:08very vulnerable
02:09very sharp
02:10and you really care for him
02:12working with Chiwetel
02:15who's very experienced
02:16and a great actor
02:18been a fan of his work for a long time
02:20so bright
02:20and so just ready
02:23it's kind of incredible
02:25confidence and poise and prep
02:27is really impressive
02:28he allowed the rest of us
02:30to have that same kind of work ethic
02:32let's go about this
02:33with an efficiency
02:35and a sense of duty
02:36my back is thick with scars
02:39for protesting our freedom
02:43watching Chiwetel was to me a masterclass
02:45in subtlety and in nuance
02:48because he did have this
02:4912 years of this story to tell
02:51and starting in one place
02:52and I was able to see all of it
02:53just alive in him
02:55you can't imagine
02:59how difficult it was
03:01to do what he had to do
03:03he's in every scene
03:05emotionally
03:06as an actor
03:07it's a rigorous workout
03:09I worked with a dialect coach
03:10and strove to indicate
03:12the passage of 12 years
03:14to the hair, makeup, voice, physicality
03:16he became very much in depth in Solomon
03:19and that was impressive to see
03:21days ago I was with my family
03:23in my home
03:25now you tell me all is lost
03:26it takes all the courage
03:28and strength to keep within that character
03:30for that period of time
03:31I thought you knowed something
03:33I did as instructed
03:34there's something wrong
03:35it's wrong with the instruction
03:37we just knew going in
03:39that it was going to be
03:39a physical strain
03:41to reenact those exact things
03:43the story
03:44it is amazing
03:46and in no good way
03:47you come here
03:49I say come here
03:50but it felt it was such a
03:51strong part of the story
03:54I will survive
03:55I will not fall into despair
03:57I will keep myself hardy
03:59till freedom is opportune
04:00it was tough
04:01sort of emotionally
04:02and physically
04:03but every day
04:04there was a sense of
04:05really connecting
04:06to Solomon and his story
04:10and reenacting something
04:12that he went through
04:13and trying to reenact it
04:15in the detail
04:15that he describes it
04:17was something that really
04:18was very important to me
04:20it would be
04:21it would be
04:22an unspeakable happiness
04:23to see my wife
04:26and my family again
04:27she would tell
04:29there's an ability
04:30and nobility
04:31to sort of hold the camera
04:32and hold the whole film together
04:34it was an extraordinary journey
04:36to go on
04:37and I knew that it would be
04:39I was a free man
04:42I'm not a slave
04:44goodément
04:44in the future
04:44I'm not a slave
04:45but he is playing
04:46the same for you
04:46to be the same for you
04:46to be the same for you
04:47and it's not
