00:26extremely beautiful, incredibly
00:28self-composed
00:28and smart as a whip
00:30and that's a really fun character
00:33to write for and to direct.
00:37And it's
00:38like a lot of
00:41like a lot of people
00:42she's drawn to Mordecai not because
00:45of his
00:46not because he's virtuous
00:47not because he's smart
00:49not because he's heroic
00:52but in fact because of
00:54the opposite of all those, he's a rogue.
00:57And he's
00:58and he makes her laugh
00:59and that goes a long way.
01:03Ewan McGregor's character
01:05Inspector Martland
01:06has been in love with
01:08Joanna for
01:09twenty years since they were all together
01:11at college
01:12and
01:13in most ways
01:15he's a much better match for her than Mordecai.
01:17He really
01:18does belong with her.
01:19He's much smarter.
01:20He is heroic.
01:21He has a huge career.
01:23He's
01:24all the things that we traditionally value
01:26and that this guy
01:28values
01:29he's got
01:30and he should be with her
01:31but she doesn't love him
01:32she loves Mordecai.
01:33She is however not above
01:35a certain amount of
01:39not leading him on
01:40but perhaps
01:43flipping her hair in a certain way
01:44that she knows he likes
01:45so that she can get information out of him
01:47because he too is chasing the painting.
01:49So there's a
01:50there's a love triangle
01:51at the center of the story
01:52which is great.
01:55Jock is played by Paul Bettany
01:58who's fantastic
01:59and he's
02:00Mordecai introduces him
02:01as his manservant
02:02and thug
02:04and
02:04he is.
02:06Jock is sort of
02:07Jock would love to be a butler
02:08he sort of aspires
02:09to those sorts of things
02:10but really
02:10he's exceptionally skilled
02:12at beating people up.
02:14he's
02:16so every
02:18it's in keeping with the
02:19sort of high and low
02:21balance
02:22you know
02:22the high being
02:23there's a terribly witty dialogue
02:25beautiful sets
02:25the low is
02:27we're not above a sight gag
02:28people falling down
02:29Jock is
02:31Jock is
02:32you know
02:33ostensibly a butler
02:34but really a thug
02:36and
02:37that kind of
02:38that kind of balance is great.
02:42I personally destroyed
02:43a number of takes
02:44by laughing
02:45I can't help it
02:47the first day
02:48in particular
02:49I had a hard time
02:50in our first set up
02:51because
02:52I didn't
02:52you know
02:53I'd talked to Johnny
02:54a number of times
02:55I had a general idea
02:56what he was going to do
02:57but until he shows up
02:59because you know
02:59he creates these characters
03:01and they're full and complete
03:02you know
03:02I mean you know the list
03:04it's Jack Sparrow
03:05and Willy Wonka
03:06and you know
03:07tons of others
03:07but you don't know
03:09it's not what you expect
03:10and yet it's somehow perfect
03:12and he shows up
03:14and then becomes
03:15that person
03:16on the first take
03:17because he doesn't
03:18really do it in rehearsal
03:19you know
03:20you're just reading it
03:20make sure the script's
03:22the way you want it
03:23and then he just
03:25becomes that person
03:26and
03:27I was laughing
03:29just hysterically
03:30at the monitor
03:31and ruined several takes
