00:31We knew when we went to Tom
00:33that he could really
00:35get at a story that is about
00:37love, a story that is about
00:39transcendence of love beyond
00:41gender. Background action!
00:44And he's such a
00:45great director. Visually
00:47he shot the world
00:49of this film so beautifully.
00:53I felt the aesthetic of beauty was
00:55kind of central to the way these artists
00:57saw the world. I and I was fascinated
00:59by the beauty of landscape.
01:02Gerda was very
01:03driven by female beauty and
01:05the capturing of beauty on the canvas
01:07so I kind of wanted to honour that in the way that I
01:09went about it. I got
01:11very inspired by the paintings of Hammershoy
01:13who's a wonderful Danish artist.
01:15So he decided to build a replica of Hammershoy's
01:17apartment based on the paintings.
01:21I threw Danny Cohen
01:23the challenge of lighting the film and the style
01:25of these wonderful paintings and trying to capture
01:27this incredible softness of the light
01:29you get in these long extended summer evenings
01:31in the north.
01:33And it has that very Danish
01:35sort of grey-blue muted colour scheme
01:38and I liked
01:39seeing Lily in this rather bare colour palette
01:41where you can kind of imagine
01:43why she needs to escape this rather austere
01:45world.
01:48The extraordinary thing
01:49with Tom is he has such a minute
01:51knowledge of every single
01:53piece of information. There is a rigour
01:55to the way he works and yet
01:57he relies entirely on instincts.
02:00It's all about how it feels
02:01and how it plays.
02:03He's so alive. He sees everything.
02:05He has an attention for everything and his attention
02:07comes from passion and passion
02:09is a form of love.
02:11Tom has that emotional intelligence
02:13to treat a subject in their journey
02:15with the biggest delicacy and
02:17sensitivity.
02:19The fact is, I believe that I'm a woman.
02:22And I believe it too.
02:26We live in quite a cynical time
02:28and there's something rather beautiful
02:29going back to this story in the 20s
02:31and see this kind of love
02:32that's so unbelievably giving
02:34and that love is the great kind of force
02:36in this incredibly moving story.
02:38you
02:40you
02:42you
02:47you
02:48you
02:48Grazie.
