00:00So I've had this thought for a while.
00:01I don't want it to happen, and I'm actually going to use something
00:04that Zach Jackson said was stupid to go against it here.
00:10I've said for a while that ever since Todd Munkin took over
00:15that he's a 60-year-old head coach.
00:17He's got to win as soon as he possibly can.
00:18This is probably his one shot to be a head coach.
00:21I'd imagine this is.
00:23So he's got to win as soon as he possibly can.
00:25And when you're saying it's an open competition,
00:27and it's going to start in OTAs,
00:29you go, that really ain't good for Shador.
00:31One guy's got more experience.
00:32The other guy has – he was a former MVP candidate.
00:35I know it's been a long time since then.
00:37He has more of a knowledge of NFL offense.
00:41There's a lot of things that if Deshaun Watson is healthy,
00:45go in his category to win that job if it's an open job.
00:50I want – if everything's the way they are,
00:52like if they go out and they get Kyler Murray,
00:54we all know what the score is.
00:55But as it sits right now, I want Shador Sanders to win that job without a doubt.
01:00I would just have to raise the white flag if they went and they got Kyler Murray
01:03or God knows who.
01:04I want Shador Sanders to win that job.
01:06However, I've said because of all those reasons,
01:09it wouldn't surprise me at all if Deshaun Watson were to win that job.
01:12And Adam Schefter on ESPN, he agrees.
01:15What's Cleveland doing?
01:16Cleveland.
01:17That's it.
01:18Okay.
01:19Shador Sanders.
01:19Pro Bowling.
01:20They have Deshaun Watson.
01:22And by the way, let me say this.
01:23There are people out there who believe that Deshaun Watson
01:26could very well be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.
01:29Well, maybe Adam Schefter's listening to the show.
01:31I brought that up with you yesterday.
01:33We found that clip, that audio courtesy of Pat McAfee's show on ESPN.
01:37I gave you that clip.
01:38And what did you say that Zach Jackson had said?
01:40He said it's ridiculous.
01:42He said it was stupid.
01:43That's the quote.
01:44It's stupid to think that.
01:46Yeah.
01:46It was before Schefter said it.
01:47Zach's called me stupid publicly and privately.
01:49I don't think Zach's going to change his mind.
01:51But that this is a colossal waste of time to in any way allow him to truly
01:57compete for the job, to even feign interest in trotting him out there
02:03and announcing him to your fans week one.
02:06Like there's no chance to waste of everybody's time because they're not
02:09going to give him an extension.
02:10They're not going to sign him.
02:11They are done with Deshaun Watson after this.
02:14Listen, I would tend to agree.
02:17I would tend to agree.
02:19But there is such a thing as health and right to work.
02:23And I think you have to leave it.
02:25Like you could always, if you really wanted to, I mean, coaches have been
02:29pig head-ish.
02:31Coaches have decided that they trust one guy over another.
02:34It's happened for hundreds of years since the beginning of sport.
02:38You could, if you really wanted to, have a quote-unquote open competition and go,
02:42Shador serves us better.
02:43That's it.
02:44And put it on Deshaun to go ahead and answer those questions about why he ain't
02:46starting if he's asked questions.
02:48Because as a backup during the regular season, you're not going to be asked a lot
02:51of questions with the exception of if you're a really big star that people are
02:54going to seek out in the locker room like Shador Sanders.
02:57But if you're a backup, you're really not going to be asked a lot of questions during
03:00the regular season.
03:01But you're going to be asked some questions during the preseason.
03:03You're going to be asked questions during a training camp.
03:05And if it's an open competition, if you really want to put it on Deshaun to answer those
03:10questions, go right on ahead.
03:14But for what Zach says, that makes a ton of sense.
03:17But I'm just looking at it going, you hired a 60-year-old head coach.
03:21He's supposed to be a ball coach.
03:24His job, one, is winning football games.
03:27I want, as they sit right now, I want Shador to win that job.
03:32Everybody knows that.
03:33The whole city knows that.
03:35But if you have a head coach that has to answer to the other 52, what's he left to do
03:40if one
03:40guy looks better than the other?
03:41What is he going to do?
03:43You put him in that spot.
03:44That's why I said all last fall, while we were losing games, looked hapless doing it.
03:48I go, hey, guys, I know you guys all hate Kevin Stefanski, and he ain't doing a really
03:52good job right now.
03:53I couldn't defend the job he was doing, and I wouldn't defend the job he was doing.
03:56I forget which game.
03:57I just gave up on him, and that was it.
04:00He might be the best friend that Shador has, because you could just expect more of the
04:03same if he was there and just carry on with it.
04:05Now you have a desperate 60-year-old coach.
04:07Every new coach is desperate.
04:09But you have a 60-year-old coach who might have to do just exactly what's best for the football
04:13team that he has.
04:14I would say the good news in all of this is Deshaun, I think, will make it look really
04:20easy, or at least the evaluation will be easier than I think we think it might be today.
04:24What I mean by that is, the last time he was out in training camp, when he could actually
04:30play, I remember Zach Jackson, and Jason Lloyd was there too.
04:34Maybe Jason was just parroting what Zach was saying.
04:36But Zach was like, oh my god, he can't throw the football.
04:39Like, this is bad.
04:40He's throwing ground balls.
04:41He's coming back from a shoulder injury.
04:42Right, but that's how he played.
04:43It's been two years since that shoulder injury, Anthony.
04:46I know, but then he suffered more injuries.
04:48He suffered an Achilles injury twice over, but he suffered an Achilles injury.
04:53How many surgeries has he had since he's been good at football?
04:57It's been three.
05:00And the other one he re-aggravated on the boat, or whatever the story is that they're saying
05:06on how he got injured.
05:06I counted that in the three.
05:07I counted two Achilles surgeries, and I counted a shoulder surgery.
05:10Am I missing one?
05:12He was still good after the ACL, wasn't he?
05:15Yeah, on the bad team.
05:16Okay, you said since he's been good.
05:17But the team was bad, but he threw for 4,000 yards.
05:19All right, so I think we'll know pretty quickly, like whether, if those mechanics are shot or
05:26not.
05:26Because unfortunately, some guys, especially with that shoulder, some guys, it's just shot,
05:31and they lose that arm strength.
05:33And if he can't, because obviously the athleticism is going to wane each and every year.
05:37I mean, wow, we saw it with Lamar Jackson, of all people, last year.
05:40Lamar couldn't get away from people.
05:43If that's the case, he's got to be able to throw the ball.
05:46He's got to be able to do it outside the numbers.
05:47He can't be throwing floaters.
05:48He can't be throwing ground balls.
05:51Everything was off.
05:52Since he's been a Brown, the mechanics went crazy.
05:56I love it, too.
05:56I mean, if Quincy Avery would want to come on and talk to us about that, I'd love to have
06:01him on.
06:02Because I don't know what happened.
06:03I'm open-minded to anybody, yeah.
06:05And Quincy says, oh, wait till you see.
06:07It's looking good and everything.
06:09Okay.
06:10Right?
06:10That's his quarterback coach, right?
06:11Yeah.
06:11That's who it is.
06:12So I'd welcome him on to talk us through it.
06:15Because the guy that we've had in Cleveland was not the guy I salivated over.
06:20And part of it might be upstairs, too, right?
06:23Like, he was the villain.
06:24He went from being...
06:26Do you remember the way guys talked about him as a leader, doing stuff in the community,
06:31buying stuff for his offensive linemen, every story was about, wow, this is how you would
06:37create a leader out of the lab.
06:39And then 30 allegations.
06:40I'm sorry.
06:41That's why, I mean, being comfortable with being a villain is a place that very few people
06:46can go.
06:47I mean, that's what...
06:47We saw LeBron struggle with it in Miami.
06:50He struggled big time with it.
06:52To me, that's what made Kobe special, is that he did not care whether people liked him
06:55or not.
06:55He did not.
06:56He just didn't care.
06:57He was coming back from the courtroom and throwing up 40 in game winners.
07:00LeBron cared.
07:01Like the same day.
07:02LeBron cared.
07:02They tried to do that whole, I'm a villain thing, and that ate him up.
07:06He does not like to be disliked.
07:08That ate him up.
07:09And I think it ate up Deshaun Watson a little bit.
07:12But I think time has passed, and I got to look at it going, do I just want to make
07:17it
07:17palatable to the fans, or do I want to act like a functioning franchise?
07:21That's a decision the fans have, that we have to make as fans.
07:23I'm serious.
07:25I could, like, I hope Shador goes out there and just takes it, right?
07:29I hope he does.
07:31Say it doesn't go that way.
07:32There's a lot of things that have to play out.
07:34Do I just want to make my fans okay and happy and not mad and go ahead and put Shador
07:39out
07:39there?
07:39I don't know how happy they'll be if he's not very good.
07:41But say, I'm just going to go ahead and I just want to keep my head low and let's just
07:45get to 2027, which I think is a fine plan.
07:48Everything I've said is like, hey, let's see if we can win in 2026.
07:52But I think there's a lot gearing up towards 2027.
07:54I'll accept reality on this, right?
07:57If you go out there in OTAs, in the veteran, the guy who has the history, the guy where
08:03a lot of Browns fans have been against him, if he goes out there and he plays better, what
08:08are you going to do?
08:08Because a functional franchise would say, we have a new head coach.
08:12This guy's never been a head coach.
08:14We put him in a position for a specific reason.
08:17I got 52 other guys.
08:19A couple of those guys are borderline Hall of Famers on this football team for crying
08:23out loud.
08:24I got a couple of other guys here who are supposed to uphold some principle of being
08:29a functional franchise in this locker room.
08:31Carson, Sweshinger, et cetera.
08:33I got to do what's right by them.
08:34Or do I just go, well, I don't want to make Kenny Carmen upset on the radio, so we're
08:38just going to go ahead and we're going to play Shador Sanders.
08:39I mean, come on.
08:40How silly does that sound?
08:44You get what I'm saying here?
08:45Like, you have to decide.
08:47You're not going to decide right now.
08:49We got to make a pick, guys, whether or not we want to make everybody just okay with
08:53this year coming up and not that bad, or we're going to be a functional franchise.
08:58If you're a functional franchise, that means Shador has to go out there and he has to
09:01take the job.
09:02It's his to take.
09:03I love Zach.
09:05I respect the hell out of Zach.
09:06Zach's called me a stupid man many times, right to my face.
09:10But I disagree with Zach wholeheartedly on this.
09:12Yes, it will make a lot of fans upset, but damn it, Todd Munkin has to do what's best
09:17for this football team.
09:18And if that includes playing Dylan Gabriel, then it includes playing Dylan Gabriel.
09:23I'm sorry.
09:24The reason why people are mad at this team in the first place is because you have not
09:28been a fully functional franchise.
09:30You've had every opportunity with some of the players that you've had over these past
09:3410 years and you've not been able to do it.
09:36You have to operate like you're going to be functional and not playing the right guy
09:41where it's an open competition supposedly is not functional.
09:45You have to do what's best.
09:47You do have veterans.
09:48You got guys in there.
09:49I don't want Carson Swessinger to give up on this football team.
09:51I don't want some of the other younger guys.
09:53I want Harold Fannin Jr. to give up on this football team.
09:56I mean, you've got some good young talent on that damn team right now, guys.
09:59I mean, we got to be honest with each other.
10:01Yes, it would make me upset.
10:02I want to see Shador Sanders.
10:04I don't want to have conversations about Deshaun Watson, but you got to do what's right
10:08to give you the very best chance to win.
10:10We're not up against it.
10:11I got plenty of time, but Todd Munkin doesn't.
