00:30Eddie Redmayne was my very first thought. He was who I wanted to cast when I read the script.
00:36Like all truly great actors, Eddie has got this fuel which drives him to incredible levels of conscientiousness and hard
00:43work.
00:44It's a part that takes a great actor and Eddie really takes us there through all the levels of becoming
00:51Lily.
00:51What was important for me was meeting men and women from the trans community and hearing about their lives and
00:58what they've gone through and they've been so giving.
01:03Every single trans person I've met has talked about knowing that it was from their youth that their assigned gender
01:09was different to their own inner identity.
01:11And so at the beginning of the film when Lily's living as Einar, he has these incredibly high starched collars,
01:18these very, very formal suits.
01:20All of this for me was a sense of Lily putting up this exoskeleton.
01:27A lot of our conversations were about rather than the character kind of learning to be something new, it needed
01:33to look like Lily was learning to shed Einar.
01:36And so one of the things I looked into is when was her inner self exposed, as it were, the
01:43sort of subconscious moments in which her true gender spoke.
01:48It's Lily.
01:50What song is it?
01:54Eddie has taken on this part with such sensitivity.
01:59I just wanted to embrace him the first time when I had seen him playing Lily.
02:04It was so clear and authentic.
02:07I could just lose myself getting to know Lily because she was so real.
02:12I think he feels such a deep responsibility to get every moment right.
02:17And it's been wonderful to watch him do that with such courage and honesty and just incredible commitment.
02:26For me, this film is a reassertion of the profundity of love.
02:30What an extraordinary thing it can be.
02:32How it is not defined by gender, by sexuality, by anything.
02:36It's something other.
02:37It's about the soul.
02:38What?
02:39What?
02:41What?
02:43What?
02:44What?
02:46What?
02:46Grazie a tutti
