00:06I
00:07So I wanna know I was deciding to make
00:13Ryan Gosling so
00:16Not strong not the strong selling type is really weak he screams like a girl I would
00:24One of the fun things about Ryan Gosling in this movie was the way he
00:29Decided to deconstruct we decided actually because it's a deconstructed private eye that we're playing you take the myth of
00:36the tough guy
00:37And then you start cutting away at it, and he was game
00:41He wanted to and you know like you say to the extent that he screams like a little girl
00:46I mean and we didn't even hear it coming you know we just he suddenly does it me he would
00:51make himself
00:52Looked like a complete fool. He would act drunk. He would fall down. He would slur his words
00:58He was in the movie. He's a terrible father to this little girl
01:02He was not afraid to make himself look compromised
01:06And that's one of the things I loved about him as an actor
01:09It's one of the reasons I knew he'd be perfect because we're doing a story here where the guys are
01:13kind of the the villains are very scary
01:15But the guys the two knights in shining armor except it's not really shining
01:20They're schmucks. They're the least likely people to investigate and
01:26Go against these impossible odds that they face
01:31You were on set sure
01:33Did the Russell Crowe enjoyed kicking Ryan Gosling has a lot?
01:40No, it's interesting because
01:42Actually Russell was a good like almost like a nurse in a way
01:46Because he would instruct Ryan during the fight scenes on how not to get hurt and he'd say okay my
01:53I'm gonna put my
01:55Boot right here now you watch ahead and it was like watching someone very gently coaching another actor
02:02Through a fight scene because Russell had done
02:06So many fight scenes over the years and Ryan maybe not so many
02:10So it was really almost touching to watch the two of them stage a fight scene where they're looking out
02:15for each other like that trying to keep each other safe
02:19I
02:19Think that in this genre this movie is a masterpiece because there's a lot of action
02:24But there are many many a nice touch like the cigarettes the human table the mermaids
02:31It's so rich with these these little things and I was
02:37Put all that thing in action because these brief moments like seconds and in brief seconds you see a genius
02:46scene
02:46I was writing that's the fun of it
02:49That's that's that's that's the joy is that someone says to you, okay?
02:53We want to go to a party in the movie, but it's not just any party has to be fun
02:58What do you got and so you sit down and you think about it and you start to think of
03:04fun little bits and
03:07The production designer also is very helpful. We had a wall in my office and a wall in his office
03:12with pictures, you know
03:14Color palettes and images from magazines or other films and and you start to look at it and figure out
03:20What is the look you want to achieve and part of it's the design and part of it is trying
03:23to just come up with stuff
03:24That's really whacked out there and funny like the hat made of cigarettes and stuff like that and
03:30That that to me is where you have fun. I mean I love I
03:35Used to throw parties where we would design horror masks and things like so I like to come up with
03:40stuff for a party
03:43I don't know maybe that's material for a sequel and I think that a nice thing would be
03:50I'm singing new with the Russell and Ryan because they both things
03:55Do you agree that wouldn't be a scene and which songs would they sing? I
04:02Don't think we do that because that's what happens in a lot of buddy movies
04:06Like member Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. They end up singing to each other and stuff
04:12Now but we did have an idea in the 70s. They used to have a show in America
04:18They would do this where they would have a story sometimes a mystery and then at the end that you'd
04:23cut to the characters
04:24And suddenly they're all a band and they'd be singing about the story you just saw
04:28And we wanted I pitched that so many times and I just got shot down
04:32But I wanted to have Ryan and Russell just singing about the lessons and Holly's on the drum
04:37Jack Gowry's on the drums and I thought that would have been fun
04:41Last question. The movie is it's very fun, very
04:46light if we can say, but there's a deep moment when Russell Crowe's character says
04:52The most important thing in life is to be useful. Do you agree what you do in life for being
04:58Useful. I don't know except that when I slow down I get very sad
05:03I have to keep working and keep making films. I
05:08Used to think that the greatest thing that could happen was to have all this free time
05:12And now I know that free time is the enemy and so
05:17Useful, I don't know but writing something is trying at least if you're going to be tortured in your life
05:23Why not be tortured over something slightly noble like writing?
05:26Or acting or filmmaking, you know, it's better than worrying about car payments
05:31You know make it about something that actually
05:35At the end of the day gives you a product that you can be creatively proud of. That's where I'm
05:39at
05:41Thank you very much
