The religion of Islam began in the early 7th century through the life and teachings of Muhammad, who was born around 570 AD in Mecca. Muhammad came from the Quraysh tribe and was the son of Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, who died before Muhammad was born. Raised by his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib and later his uncle, Muhammad grew up in a society where many tribes worshiped different gods, though Jewish and Christian communities were also present in Arabia.

At the age of about forty, Muhammad said he received his first revelation while meditating in Cave of Hira, where the angel Jibril commanded him to “recite.” These revelations later became the Qur'an, which Muslims believe is the final word of God. When Muhammad was frightened by this experience, his wife Khadijah bint Khuwaylid took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal, who was familiar with the scriptures. Waraqah reportedly affirmed that the spirit Muhammad encountered was the same angel who spoke to the prophets of the Bible, such as Moses, and predicted that Muhammad would face opposition from his people.
In the early years, Muhammad’s message of monotheism was opposed by leaders in Mecca who feared it would disrupt their religious and economic system centered around the Kaaba. However, a small group of followers joined him, including his wife Khadijah, his cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib, and his companion Abu Bakr. Due to increasing persecution, Muhammad and his followers migrated in 622 AD to Medina, an event known as the Hijra, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. In Medina, Muhammad established a religious and political community that eventually grew strong enough to challenge Mecca. After several conflicts, Muhammad’s followers captured Mecca in 630 AD, and many Arabian tribes embraced Islam. Following Muhammad’s death in 632 AD, Islamic leadership passed to the caliphs, and within a century Islam spread rapidly across regions such as Persia, Egypt, and parts of North Africa and Spain.
From a Christian or Messianic perspective, dialogue with Islam usually begins by recognizing shared beliefs, such as belief in one God and respect for biblical figures like Abraham and Moses.
