00:19What is that?
00:20Is it a script?
00:21You better give us our roles.
00:24When we were casting up the movie, part of the appeal to me was that you know Ryan and Emma,
00:28they're going to be a couple.
00:29You can see them and imagine them together.
00:32It was like Fred and Ginger, Bogart and Bacall, a classic Hollywood screen couple.
00:36You have two actors who have an on-screen chemistry that I think is one for the ages.
00:43The idea of this really modern story of two struggling artists and dreamers
00:48became something really exciting very quickly.
00:51It was a secret wish of mine to make a film in the style of musicals from the 30s and
00:5640s.
00:57In my musical theatre days we talked about people who were a true triple threat.
01:00Emmett and Ryan have a rare combination of great singer, great dancer, great actor.
01:04Thanks for having me back.
01:06You're welcome.
01:07I play the manager of this interesting supper club.
01:11We both got a little bit of the kick out of casting him as a jazz-hating bitter owner
01:16who keeps trying to dissuade his pianist from playing anything other than Jingle Bells.
01:20You're fired.
01:21It's Christmas.
01:22Yeah, I see the decorations. Good luck in the new year.
01:25I play Ryan Gosling's older sister.
01:27I have someone I want you to meet.
01:29I don't want to meet anyone.
01:30There's a lot of love, there's a lot of friction.
01:32Why do you say romantic like it's a dirty word?
01:36Unpaid bills are not romantic. Call her.
01:39What was your Bogart's name?
01:42Is it Greg?
01:44Yeah.
01:44Greg is smart, funny.
01:46He has money, so you could take her out to nice dinners,
01:48but doesn't have the toolkit to be able to be there for her.
01:56Keith is looking for a keyboard player in his new band, and he sees his old friend, Sebastian.
02:03We really wanted to cast somebody out of the music world for that Keith role, and John came along.
02:08Ryan and John joked that it was all part of my master plan to cast John Legend,
02:13but deprive him of his normal instrument and give that one to Ryan.
02:16I had to learn playing guitar for the film and just trying to make sure I felt confident and comfortable.
02:22And mine wasn't as high pressure because, you know, the film wasn't about me being a guitarist,
02:26but it's about Sebastian as a pianist.
02:31Ryan was very game to take on what was an insane challenge.
02:34We were not going to chop up. We were going to film in long takes proving that it was, in
02:39fact, him playing piano.
02:47Piano is always something I wished I'd had the time to learn.
02:50What other job is it a part of your job to just sit in front of a piano for three
02:54months and play?
02:56It was really one of the most fulfilling pre-production periods I've ever had.
03:06The training of Ryan and Emma was a whole nother beast, you know,
03:10because it's not only are you choreographing a film, you're going to train the main actors how to dance.
03:15We did lots of preparation with many more, learning to tap dance and learn jazz and ballroom.
03:21We had dance rehearsal every day for about two or three months before we started shooting.
03:27When we got a good take, everyone knew it worked and it just felt really magical.
03:32They seemed excited about the amount of work it would take to do this movie.
03:36That was astonishing and exciting to me.
03:46It's been really fun doing this and it's been a great first experience as an actor.
03:50Just getting to play music every day and dance every day was a real once in a lifetime opportunity.
03:55Living in a musical world where when you're filled with joy you can spin down the street or burst into
04:02song.
04:02I loved that.
04:03I loved it.
04:23I loved that
