00:01I
00:02went down there
00:04to tell my side
00:06of the story
00:07and then to get everything turned around
00:09and get charged with first degree
00:12murder, it hurt
00:14Melvin, do you want to go home?
00:16Yeah
00:17What happened at the hotel?
00:21Here in Detroit
00:22a city of war
00:23on the city's west side, a 150 block area
00:26is off limits to everybody
00:27this is no man's land
00:29Leading up to the 1967
00:31rebellion, there were a number of
00:34problems and concerns that had
00:36existed for a number of years
00:37This was a city that at that point
00:40had grown to nearly 40%
00:42African American and yet had a
00:43police force that was
00:4595% white
00:47It was like a powder keg all over the city
00:50Tension was just building up
00:52in the people and it was just
00:54ready to explode
00:57The Altair's
00:58This motel, it's a real American tragedy
01:01One of the most
01:02important aspects of
01:05preparing this movie was to spend
01:06time with the people who
01:08actually lived this incident
01:10My marching orders were to find as many
01:12of the principles as I could
01:14that could tell us something
01:16about their perspective on
01:18on what happened
01:21A fellow police officer said to me
01:24Ike, did you hear about what happened at the Algiers?
01:26Some white officers shot and killed some young black guys
01:31I was inside when
01:33Algiers incident broke out
01:35And we were just sitting there talking
01:37we had music on
01:38and a bullet went right past my head
01:41from outside
01:45You don't talk about this
01:47to anyone ever
01:48You understand?
01:50There will be those who say no
01:51but the reality is
01:52it has to be shown
01:54so people know
01:55Ike, Ike, Ike, Ike, Ike, Ike
01:58Ike, Ike, Ike, Ike
