00:59I was actually very interested and excited
01:02to see what Aiden would do with that moment
01:04because it's a moment he's never been in before.
01:07He's imagined every conceivable eventuality except this one.
01:11Lady Sansa, forgive me. I'm a bit confused.
01:15Whatever you want to say about Littlefinger,
01:17and he's clearly a sociopath amongst other things,
01:20he does have strong feelings towards Sansa.
01:23They're not necessarily healthy, appropriate feelings,
01:25but they are feelings towards her,
01:27and so I think he has a hard time believing
01:29that she'll be able to do this.
01:31Sansa, please.
01:32I'm a slow learner, but I learn.
01:35Unfortunately for him, he's trained her too well,
01:37and she's not about to be swayed by his tears or his pleas.
01:40Thank you for all your many lessons, Lord Baelish.
01:49You have 60-plus hours at this point of main characters
01:53who you hopefully are really invested in.
01:55It was a challenge because there are so many different ways it could go,
02:00but the fact that it was centered around the effort to persuade Cersei
02:05to stand down and to accept a truce.
02:08That gave it a spine.
02:10This isn't about living in harmony.
02:12It's just about living.
02:14There are so many different interconnections between all these people.
02:17The Hound mountain scene was one we felt we needed to highlight.
02:21Remember me.
02:22Just as Euron's not a person who's going to wait his turn,
02:26the Hound is not somebody who's going to let this person or thing
02:30or whatever he is now walk by him unchallenged
02:33given who the mountain is to him and has been to him in his life.
02:37You know who's coming for you.
02:39You've always known.
02:42One of the themes of the season,
02:43that characters might be skeptics about religion and the supernatural,
02:47but once they confront it, face to decomposing face,
02:50it's really hard to deny it anymore.
02:54I cannot serve two queens.
02:57Then there is nothing left to discuss.
02:59I don't think Tyrion goes to see Cersei out of pride
03:02or to prove that he's brave.
03:05Gan is one of the situations where it's the only choice he can see.
03:08It's the only way he feels like he can salvage this peace mission
03:11is to go himself.
03:13He's the only person who can talk to her
03:15because as much as she hates him and as much as he hates her,
03:19they know each other better than probably anybody in the world knows them.
03:23I don't care about checking my worst impulses.
03:26I don't care about making the world a better place.
03:28Hang the world.
03:30It's a little bit of a poker game they're playing there
03:32because it seems like she's bluffing and he reads her bluff,
03:34but she wanted him to read her bluff.
03:36This was all part of her game.
03:38You're pregnant.
03:40Cersei's become quite good at playing this game.
03:42She wasn't in power, but she was on the edges of power
03:44and she learned how to operate in that environment.
03:47And she plays Tyrion pretty beautifully here.
03:50The darkness is coming for us all.
03:52We'll face it together.
03:55We were in that dragon pit for many, many days.
03:59It's a deceptively difficult thing to shoot
04:02because there's so many different moments between different people
04:05and they need to be shot that way.
04:07Otherwise, it doesn't feel like anybody's looking at the person
04:10they're supposed to be looking at
04:11or playing off the person they're supposed to be playing off.
04:13We both saw what just happened.
04:15This goes beyond houses and honor and oaths.
04:18It's an interesting moment for Brienne
04:20because Brienne is so defined by loyalty,
04:22but this goes beyond that.
04:23Talk to the queen.
04:24Jaime is chosen to side with his sister.
04:28She is unequivocally bad.
04:30Everyone knows this, including Jaime.
04:31She's just trying to get him to see beyond that.
04:34And tell her what?
04:36I think that's certainly on Jaime's mind,
04:38but then the final straw is when he realizes
04:40that this was all a scam.
04:41I always knew you were the stupidest that, Mr.
04:44I think seeing the truth of what's in the North,
04:48it meant one thing to Jaime
04:49and it meant something else to Cersei.
04:51They both acknowledge the truth of it.
04:52They're both smart enough to realize what it means,
04:54but she is still seeing it
04:57from a cold, strategic standpoint,
05:00and he's seeing it from a position
05:02more of existential survival for everyone.
05:05This isn't about noble houses.
05:07This is about the living and the dead.
05:09And I intend to stay amongst the living.
05:12It's one thing to say,
05:13okay, Cersei played a trick on her enemies,
05:15but she didn't confide in him.
05:17So he's realizing that his loyalty to her
05:20is not reflected in her loyalty to him.
05:22No one walks away from me.
05:24I think that absolutely is what informs his decision
05:27to leave King's Landing.
05:29I don't believe you.
05:39He needs to know the truth.
05:41The truth about what?
05:42About himself.
05:44Jon's not Jon Sand.
05:45He's actually, as Bran finally overhears from Lyanna,
05:48Aegon Targaryen.
05:49And that means he's the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
05:52That changes everything.
05:54I would say the challenge with this sequence
05:57was finding a way to present information
06:00that at least a good portion of the audience already had
06:03in a way that was dramatic and exciting,
06:05also had a new element to it.
06:08Part of the answer as to how to go about doing that
06:10was in the montage-intercut nature of it.
06:13It was about making it clear that this was almost like
06:16an information bomb that Jon was heading towards.
06:20Robert's Rebellion was built on a lie.
06:22The only way to really emphasize that
06:24was to tie those two worlds together cinematically
06:27and to have Bran actually narrating these facts
06:31over the footage of Jon and of Dany.
06:34He's the heir to the Iron Throne.
06:36Just as we're seeing these two people come together,
06:38we're hearing the information that will inevitably,
06:42if not tear them apart, at least cause real problems
06:45in their relationship.
06:46And she's his aunt.
06:48It complicates everything on a political level,
06:50on a personal level, and it just makes everything
06:52that could have been so neat and kind of perfect
06:55for Jon and Dany, and it really muddies the waters.
06:59We need to tell him.
07:06We tried to contrast the various season endings
07:09so that they don't feel too similar.
07:11So last season we had a pretty triumphant ending
07:13with Dany finally sailing west towards Westeros.
07:15This one is definitely much more horrific.
07:18Run!
07:20Many years now we've known this would be the ending
07:22of the penultimate season.
07:23The wall's kept these things out for 8,000 years.
07:27There's no real reason that it can't keep doing that
07:29unless something puts a hole in the wall.
07:31There's one thing on the board from the beginning
07:34that is now big enough to do that,
07:36and that's a dragon.
07:39It just starts to suggest itself
07:41as a logical way forward.
07:43We write, and then the wall comes tumbling down,
07:46and it's really easy to type those words on.
07:48It's really hard for them to make it look good.
07:52Need it to be a thing you go out of the season on.
07:56First four or five years of the show,
07:58it was the expanding universe,
07:59and as we get near the end of the show,
08:02the universe contracts.
08:04Characters are going to a place
08:06that they never have before,
08:07quite literally in some cases,
08:09but also just in a larger sense
08:11where they're facing the conflicts
08:13they know will decide their fates.
08:15The lone wolf dies,
08:16but the pack survives.
08:18Winter is here,
08:19and it's all hitting the fan from all directions.
