00:00Hello?
00:02I'd like you to tell me about this project.
00:03All you have to do is give an honest account of your experience.
00:06Maniac is totally crazy,
00:08which I love.
00:10It's impossible to explain what it is.
00:12Do you have any sense why that's true?
00:14It's all different time periods,
00:16different types of people, different worlds.
00:19Maniac is a very kind of literal depiction
00:21of all the different sides to someone's existence.
00:25Tell me about this idea of connection.
00:27The main theme of Maniac is connection with other people.
00:31Connection's a better drug than anything that can be manufactured.
00:35Great.
00:36Welcome to the start of your new life.
00:38You'll never be the same again.
00:40And action!
00:43Emma was the first person I asked for the project.
00:45I thought it was a really interesting concept.
00:47We were talking about who else would be great in the show,
00:49and he said that he had been hanging out with Jonah a lot,
00:51and I was like, oh my God, we have to FaceTime Jonah right now.
00:54And call my cell phone.
00:56And we were like, we're coming over.
00:57Jonah was like, that sounds great.
00:59So we went over to Jonah's house.
01:01She kind of calls the shots,
01:02so she was just like,
01:03three of us are going to do this TV show together.
01:05And we were off making Maniac.
01:08Welcome, subjects.
01:09You are pioneers at the forefront of a new world.
01:13My character believes that you can basically remap the brain,
01:15that it's no different than a hard drive.
01:18I simply found an elegant way to fix people.
01:22In the lab, you take a pill,
01:23they put an electromagnetic thing around your head,
01:26you close your eyes,
01:27and you go into these hallucinations.
01:31What the hell is going on?
01:33The consciousnesses of two of our subjects have been crossing.
01:36Every time I separate them,
01:37they just find their way back together.
01:39It's been a really cool gift as an actor
01:42to get to play so many people
01:44that all live within the same person.
01:46One day I'm a Texan assassin,
01:48and the next day I'm an elf with a British accent,
01:51and then I'm in Long Island stealing a lemur.
01:53Just call the cops and clear this whole thing off.
01:55No, I can't call the cops.
01:57This is an illegal lemur.
01:59Got it, check it.
02:01You look beautiful.
02:02You can tell when people like each other,
02:03and have respect and love for each other.
02:05That's a strong connection.
02:06Carey's direction is amazing.
02:08He has a really distinct eye.
02:10He's great finding the most surprising moment
02:12that you didn't know was gonna be there
02:14before you walked on the set that day.
02:15He skips across so many genres.
02:18Telling this giant story
02:19while developing a whole aesthetic,
02:22he just knows exactly what he wants.
02:24I just let the actors know right away,
02:26I have no idea what I'm doing.
02:27We just figure it out together.
02:31How do you make someone okay?
02:34There really is nothing that can just fix you.
02:36In the end, Owen and Annie find healing
02:39in just making a friend.
02:40You just have one person that looks at you
02:42and gets you and understands you.
02:44It's kind of beautiful.
02:48Astronomical collision, biological union.
02:51These forces of nature demonstrate
02:53that all souls are on a quest to connect.
02:56Camaraderie, communion, family, friendship, love.
03:00We're lost without connection.
03:09So is this therapy now?
03:10It's not therapy.
03:13It's...
03:31even though we tablet,
03:32There are a lot of people you can imagine it.
03:32The dog vired air to his skin,
03:32From there,
03:32an auxiliary toark.
03:32There are a lot of people up there.
