00:00Which Mavericks players need to be a part of this team going forward?
00:05And I want to start, if we can, with cut number six,
00:09because I'm really hoping this is somebody that we can all agree
00:12needs to be on this team.
00:15Birds are ready to bring on Kelvin Johnson.
00:18Christy for three and on the money.
00:21Max Christy.
00:23Max Christy.
00:24No, he is not on our team.
00:27But Max Christy is one of the four, for me,
00:33that I think you absolutely have to bring back to this team.
00:36Is this going to be one that we can all agree on?
00:39Let me look at my list here, Kevin.
00:42Okay.
00:43He is the number two person on my list.
00:46Me too.
00:50Is your number one Cooper Flagg, or are you just trying to irritate him?
00:53It's a tough day.
00:54Caleb Foster got hurt.
00:55All right?
00:56Oh, yeah.
00:57That did happen in the North Carolina game.
00:59And one of his other Duke players can't play in the ACC tournament.
01:01And so now he's very concerned.
01:03Because when I said he's out for the tournament, Kevin went, what?
01:06Because Patrick and Gungba.
01:08And he was on the team last year.
01:10And when he said that, I was like, I thought Shire just said he'll be back.
01:13Caleb Foster's a good defender.
01:15Kevin, Max Christy.
01:17And yes, Cooper Flagg is also allowed to stay on this team.
01:21Or else I would have been like, we have built this team all wrong.
01:24I know when we asked Michael Finley about kind of the, what's the idea, you know, he obviously
01:31was going to, like, we want guys that are hungry to win.
01:34Like, that was a big factor for him.
01:37Guys that want to be part of a team thing.
01:38I don't know that that was a shot at Luka.
01:41But then he said, but it all can't be one guy.
01:43It's got to be a team.
01:45We can't have dudes just standing around to shoot.
01:48That felt like a, because that was the design of a Luka offense.
01:52Is Luka has ball.
01:54Whenever he decides to give ball to somebody else, they better be ready to shoot because
01:58the clock's probably running out.
02:00Or that's what Luka decided for that person was, we don't need a third pass.
02:06Yes, I'm the assist guy.
02:08You get the ball and shoot.
02:09This, with Cooper Flagg, looks more like the ball moves a little bit more.
02:14And it's not in one hand most of the time.
02:17It moves a little bit more.
02:18And there's lots of, a variety of ways to finish.
02:22And that includes having bigs, having smalls, having, you know, shooters.
02:26You've got to have a little bit of everything.
02:27So that's what I feel the Mavs want.
02:29Max Christie fits that.
02:30Yes.
02:30Cooper Flagg fits that.
02:31I think Najee Harris, or Najee Marshall, fits that as well.
02:36Hold that thought.
02:37From the 469, have you guys noticed how Cooper has been, quote unquote, complaining a lot
02:43more, even before he got hurt, to the point he had a tech about it?
02:47So, I think Cooper specifically was talking about the tech, but I think this is encouraging.
02:52He goes, I've got to be better at slowing down a little bit.
02:55I've been playing a little too fast since I got back.
02:58Heck, I don't know, I was frustrated, kind of just let it out, and I got to move on.
03:03And so, it does feel like he, like, made reference to, yeah, I let it out, got to move on,
03:09got
03:09to be better, got to play slower.
03:10I'm not worried about that long term, but if we get to the point where that starts to
03:15pile up, then yes, indeed.
03:17And by the way, I see 214, 817, Luka.
03:22It's not going to happen.
03:23Like, we're talking about the players who are on your roster now, who need to be part
03:27of this team going forward.
03:29All right.
03:29So, we all agree for Cooper and Max Christie, and I think those are the two easiest ones.
03:35Now, you just mentioned Najee Marshall.
03:38Yeah.
03:38I love Najee.
03:39He's got some toughness about him that I like having around.
03:42Dude can play a variety of spots.
03:45Now, I do wonder sometimes, because he and Cooper, I don't think he and Max are the same
03:52kind of built player, because Najee definitely can get to the basket a lot better and faster.
03:58And he's just very smooth to the hoop.
04:00I also just like the edge that he plays with.
04:03So, I think Najee is one of those guys that I want to keep this around for this group.
04:07Okay.
04:07I co-signed for Najee Marshall.
04:10The only concern I had about Najee Marshall is, and this will sound weird, he's 28.
04:15Now, 28 is very, very young for a human, but for basketball, when it feels like this rebuild
04:22might take a minute, and look, that's the thing that's going to be tough about all of
04:27this, is I think Cooper Flagg is the dude.
04:30You can build your franchise around him and win titles, but whether you were to get, you
04:36know, Boozer, DeBonsa, Peterson, or if you think that we, you know, should be going for
04:45some of the point guards, it's going to take a minute, and I don't think, like, next year
04:50you're all of a sudden going to be, like, a 55-win team or anything like that.
04:54So, I think it's going to take a minute, and that's why I'm a little concerned about, like,
04:57players that are even a little bit older, because I'm like, are they going to be here
05:00for the long haul of our rebuild?
05:02He's the kind of guy, though, Kevin, for me, that at the end of his, at the end of that,
05:07we're playing for Najee.
05:09Right.
05:09Well, you know what, we've been working with Najee for a while, and we want to get that
05:13guy something he deserves, because he's given his heart and soul to this thing.
05:18You know, that kind of thing.
05:19He's got some leadership qualities I like, but I'm sticking him on this team, Kevin.
05:23Yeah, he's...
05:24Whether you like him or not.
05:25No, I do like him.
05:26He's my third guy, and I only have four.
05:28Kind of sounded like you were saying he was too old later down the road, though.
05:32I said that was my only concern for even a moment, but he still makes the list.
05:37He's barely, though?
05:39No.
05:40He's...
05:40Look, there's only four, and he's one of the four.
05:43That's impressive.
05:44Just wait till you hear my last one, and then I'll...
05:48Well, you know what?
05:48I'll tell you what.
05:49I'll tell you my last one, and then you can let the implications run wild about everybody
05:53who is not on this list.
05:55The last person that I think has to be part of this team going forward, Ryan Nembhard.
06:00So that's my four.
06:01Cooper Flagg...
06:02Barely made the team.
06:03Max Christie, Ryan Nembhard, and Najee Marshall.
06:06Those are the four that I absolutely think have to be on this Mavericks team going forward.
06:12The rest of them, there are other players I would like to have, but I am willing to listen.
06:16That's a small ball team right there.
06:20Where do you find them, your bigs?
06:22Off of some of these other trades I'm about to say.
06:24You're getting Boozer also, and you're like, there we go.
06:27I mean, no, that would absolutely be incredible, but realistically...
06:32Which Boozer do you want?
06:32You want Cam, not Caden?
06:33Uh, yes.
06:34I don't think Caden's going to come out in this draft.
06:37I guess he could, depending on how the tournament goes.
06:39You want them together, though?
06:40I mean, sure, they've been together, obviously, their whole life.
06:43So that would be delightful.
06:45But you only have one big right now anyway.
06:47I was watching a little special on the Boozer boys.
06:50Oh.
06:51And, uh, and you know how when you have twins, they have this, like, you know, unspoken thing?
06:58Yes.
06:59Brothers have this unspoken thing?
07:01I walked in on a pair of...
07:03Okay.
07:04Well, that sounds weird.
07:05On a pair of twin boys when I was babysitting, and they were talking in this weird Furby language.
07:12Blop, blop, blop, blop.
07:14And then they totally knew what each other were saying, and I just walked out of the room,
07:17and I was like, oh, crap.
07:18I'll just stay down here.
07:20But, like, it was, they asked the question, hey, like, what frustrates you the most?
07:24Like, what gets you the most heated about your brother?
07:28And he said, I think he probably gets most upset whenever I don't get him the ball early.
07:34And Cam came back, and he was like, when he doesn't get me the ball early, it drives me nuts.
07:37And it makes sense.
07:39I got it.
07:39I got stuff to do.
07:42Okay.
07:43I know there are lots of people left off that list.
07:45Yeah, Nimhard is one of those guys, Kevin, where Michael Finley told us on Thursday, he loves the underdog story.
07:53And I think we like Nimhard because we've talked to him a couple times.
07:57But in addition to that, the dude has worked at every level that he's been asked to work at.
08:02And he can do some special things offensively.
08:06I'm not sure how I feel about him defensively still.
08:08But offensively, I feel like he understands what his role is when he's the point guard.
08:15Sometimes his role, he's not supposed to score because everybody else is supposed to score in this game.
08:21And that's just not your night to score because you have to distribute.
08:25You have to set up.
08:26So I do like Ryan Nimhard a lot.
08:28I would love to keep P.J. Washington.
08:30I would love to keep him.
08:31He's on my honorable mentions list.
08:33Kevin, I have the same four as you.
08:35Okay, good.
08:35The honorable mentions I have are P.J. and Gafford because I like – now, I had to choose between
08:41him and Lively.
08:42Okay.
08:43And injuries were the concern for me with Lively.
08:47And the thing I need to figure out is how do I get Lively's trade stock up because Gafford's actually
08:55is high.
08:56Yeah, and so the reason why I left P.J. and Gafford off the list – and I feel like
09:02this has been an undersold story.
09:06This season is Daniel Gafford has really regressed.
09:09Like, I know he's had injury issues that no doubt contribute to that, but even when he's been out there,
09:16he has not been very good.
09:18And then P.J. Washington – I hate to use this word again, but his three-point shooting has regressed
09:23as well.
09:24Last year, if you're like, if we get that three-point shooting, P.J. Washington, let's freaking go.
09:29But it slid back to kind of what it was.
09:32Is it a coincidence that those two regressed and Luka's not here?
09:36I think for P.J. – Gafford gets set up a lot, you know, for his 10-for-10 perfect
09:44nights by what Luka did with him.
09:47And P.J., three-point shooting, I wonder how much more wide-open shooting he had.
09:53I don't have the numbers on that.
09:54I need to go check that out because Luka was on the court.
09:58Yeah, it is a little weird because he still shot the ball well after Luka got traded last season.
10:06But I think that is absolutely a viable possibility on both of them.
10:10It's just if that's going to be the case, and I think that we're still a bit of a ways
10:16away, that's why I didn't pick either one of those because of those two specific issues.
10:21But you also didn't pick Lively.
10:24I did not.
10:26And that's interesting to me.
10:29Is this because you have a better Lago collection than him?
10:31No, I doubt that.
10:33And his Pokemon card collection is amazing.
10:36It's just –
10:37Injuries?
10:38Yeah, you've gotten to the point where I would be totally good if he stayed on this team.
10:44He has loads of potential.
10:46He has loads of potential to be that, like, modern big that we all want.
10:51He's super young.
10:54But, like, building around him feels, at least at this moment, kind of a fool's errand, right?
11:00Because you're building around him to be the dude, and then unfortunately something has happened in the past.
11:05Hopefully that won't be the case anymore, but you're already, you know, moving up pretty quickly.
11:11We're going to have to make a contract decision about him, and he can't stay out there on the floor.
11:15So what's that going to look like?
11:17Yeah.
11:17And that's why I didn't pick him.
11:19You don't think that he's going to try and do a team-friendly, suitable contract because agents don't allow that.
11:24I mean, and, like – and I could see that, right?
11:27So, like, his rookie deal – sorry, I keep saying that – is four years, $22 million.
11:32And so you might be thinking, well, I mean, you've been hurt, you missed a lot of time, and you're
11:38restricted.
11:38So, you know, let's go four for 35 or something along those lines.
11:44That's unreasonable.
11:45But if another team swoops in and is like, no, yeah, we can go the four for 54, four for
11:4952, whatever it is.
11:51It does feel like it would be super hard to just be, oh, I will turn down your extra $17
11:56million.
11:57So I would love for Derek Lively to be here.
12:00I just – I don't think it's a must right now.
12:03You know how it looks like – NFL right now looks like it's going to shorter contracts so you can
12:10get more contracts as the cap goes up.
12:12You know, like, you're like, hey, I'd take the three-year deal.
12:15You know, three years at this price works for me because maybe I can get my last contract.
12:21And baseball, with the superstars, it's definitely – we want you for 54 years if possible.
12:26Sure.
12:27And with other guys, it's like, hey, can I, you know, get off this rookie contract and, you know, get
12:32an advance early?
12:34We were talking about that with Evan Carter and Wyatt Lankford.
12:36Is the NBA in a world where shorter contracts for a guy like Gafford would be better so that they
12:42can get that and then maybe take advantage of the next one?
12:45I don't – I mean, yes, but I don't think you have all of the NBA teams in agreement.
12:51And that's the problem, right?
12:52Because if you just have one – honestly, just one – but if you have one or two, they can
12:57instantly jack that market up.
12:59And you're like, what the hell?
13:00I thought we were all on the same page here.
13:01I mean, it's fascinating, though, how you just immediately left the first dookie off, and that is Kyrie Irving.
13:08I don't understand.
13:09I mean, I didn't pick Marvin Bagley either.
13:11Yeah, but Kyrie's the first one.
13:12So what's up with that?
13:13And that's the thing.
13:16I still think seeing Kyrie and Cooper Flagg playing together would be super cool.
13:24But where are you going to be at come July?
13:28You're going to hope that you have a new point guard, right?
13:31I guess that's one of the thoughts crossing my mind.
13:33If, for some reason, you win the draft lottery or finish top three, and you're like, you know what?
13:38We are going to take Boozer, and we're going to keep rocking and rolling with Kyrie, I'm fine with that.
13:42But I also see a scenario where there's probably four point guards that you can look at in the top
13:48ten and say,
13:49I think I feel comfortable taking that guy as my next point guard and riding with that.
13:53And then Kyrie is still going to have trade value.
13:56That's the thing.
13:57There are a lot of players that I would theoretically want to keep,
14:00but if I'm going to make my team stronger in other areas, you're going to have to give up on
14:03some of these people.
14:05No, you're dead on about that.
14:06So unfortunately, I would listen to those offers as well.
