Carl and Mike get back to Falcons talk as they share thoughts on why they believe the team allowing Tyler Allgeier to move on from Tyler Allgeier and not try to match the deal he is reportedly receiving from the Cardinals was a smart business move.
Transcript
00:00Hey man, it's legal tampering day, Carl, and the rumors are flying.
00:04Again, it won't be official until the contracts get signed in a couple of days,
00:07but all of the rumors, and we'll get you up to speed real quick just when it comes to the
00:10Falcons, Carl.
00:11And we've got some new dudes, and some of these guys are familiar faces.
00:15Austin Hooper is back.
00:16Olamide Zaccheaus is back.
00:18You follow the NFL, you know Nick Folk's been kicking like, well, forever.
00:21He's going to be kicking, and he's really good.
00:23Also got a new punter who comes by way of Miami in Jake Bailey.
00:27We picked up Jahan Dotson, a former first-round pick for the Commanders who just played for the Eagles.
00:31So we got some dudes, Carl.
00:33We certainly beefed up the wide receiver room, but we also lose Tyler Algier.
00:36That becomes official as he signs a pretty good deal.
00:39Makes some decent money to go play in Arizona.
00:41But a lot of folks, Joe Patrick said, could we have matched that deal?
00:44Yes, but why?
00:46And I only say that because what you're seeing with Ian Cunningham
00:49is the pressing needs of what we've been talking about so far this offseason.
00:54They're trying to get that addressed.
00:55First, special teams, a disaster.
00:58Okay, we got to go address it.
00:59We have an empty wide receiver room.
01:01We need to go address it.
01:03What else can we do in the draft that saves us money, Mike, but makes sense?
01:07If you want to go get a running back, we've said it time and time again,
01:10that may be the way to do it.
01:12They weren't ever going to be in the business of going to get Kenneth Walker,
01:14the Super Bowl MVP.
01:16They weren't going to do that.
01:17We have a guy that's capable of doing all those things,
01:19but we need a guy that can help him carry the load.
01:21And I just think this is smart business.
01:25This isn't necessarily the emotional play of we love Tyler Algier because we do.
01:29I don't know if that would have been a smart play to match it.
01:32Just like with Anya Mata.
01:33He's 32 years old.
01:35Why are you going to go match that?
01:36These are the decisions that I think are easy.
01:39Mike, the hard decisions is who you're bringing in here as the quarterback.
01:44Right.
01:44And that's one that we've got people fired up over because, again, Kyler Murray,
01:48he got some positive vibes.
01:50It was like about, I go back and look, I think it was like 55% of our audience
01:53was cool with bringing Kyler Murray in her day-day.
01:55What's the poll results now?
01:56We're asking the question at Duke's Bell 929.
01:59Multiple ESPN and other reports linking Tua Tungavailoa to the Falcons.
02:02The Falcons have interest in him.
02:04The good news is the Dolphins are paying basically his entire salary this year,
02:07so you get him at a very good discount.
02:08Yeah, and currently 58% say no now.
02:12So no.
02:13Thank you, guys.
02:14Appreciate you.
02:15I mean, but as Carl said, I'm lukewarm on it.
02:19I'm at about a five.
02:20I'm out.
02:21But you've got to do something until Phoenix Jr. is ready.
02:24You do.
02:24And if you can get this guy for a league minimum, then why not kick the tire?
02:27And that's the other part about this.
02:30They are going to Miami, that is.
02:35Look, he's made a lot of money already there.
02:37But this cap hit, and again, it's going to be a June 1 designation,
02:43$67.4 million this year.
02:46$31.8 million next year.
02:48And I just want to remind you guys, for those of you who have been here
02:50in Falcon fans, when we took a $40 million cap hit on Matt Ryan,
02:54we lost our minds.
02:56Everybody's like, oh, my God, what are we doing?
02:59$67.4 million this year against the cap for Tua.
03:03But Mike's right.
03:04They do have to.
03:05They're going to have to bring in somebody.
03:06I said this.
03:07I don't mind the fact that they're going to bring in somebody.
03:09It's just that right now, for me, I don't necessarily like the guy
03:12that they might want to bring in.
03:14And I have my reasons.
03:15Size matters.
03:17Tua's just a guy.
03:18He's not super elite.
03:19Mike, I would ask you this.
03:21What does he do special?
03:27He wins.
03:28He wins.
03:29Carl, he wins.
03:30He wins more games than he loses.
03:32And by the way, this is not a compare and contrast,
03:35because I know many of you are going to say, well, what's the pedagogues do?
03:38That's not the question.
03:39You're bringing in a guy that could take over your team,
03:41and you want to have full confidence in him.
03:44And my fear is, one, he's injury prone.
03:46Well, we're dealing with that already with the guy who's been injury prone.
03:50And I do believe in Michael Pennix that he can get back and show us.
03:54But the Tua thing, to me, is even more down the road,
03:57because Mike's right.
03:59One guy off the edge in a clean shot, God forbid,
04:03we're watching him seize up on the field.
04:05Not something I want to see.
04:06And I know you go, well, he's making the decision to play,
04:08but you also can make the decision to say, you know what,
04:11I don't want to deal with that.
04:12And we can find somebody else.
04:13He's missed a lot of games now.
04:14Obviously, the big series where the concussions just completely shut him down.
04:18And then other minor dings and injuries.
04:20But you can Google Tua Tagovailoa injury history.
04:24And it's just one concussion after another.
04:27And this is a guy that, you know, that's why the great risk-reward.
04:30The two teams that had the big, should we or shouldn't we,
04:33was Giants with Daniel Jones a couple years ago,
04:35and the Dolphins with Tua.
04:36And this was always going to be that big risk.
04:38But, yeah, I think you could make the argument he's 12 games over .500
04:42for his career.
04:43He's a decent stopgap, you know, for one season.
04:48And maybe, you know, maybe just maybe this team thinks two ways.
04:52He is simply that a stopgap.
04:53We're thinking he can actually come in and compete for this job
04:55and maybe win this job.
04:56And then hold on to it.
04:58Because they might not believe in Michael Paddick's job either.
05:00No, you're right, Mike.
05:00Because of the injury history.
05:01But again, but to your point, one bag hit on Tua Tagovailoa,
05:04and is it Easton's stick?
05:06I mean, we're still back to, like, a major backup backup
05:09because Penix won't be ready the first three or four weeks.
05:11The only thing I like about this is this tells me
05:14where the front office mindset is.
05:16Matt, Ian, Kevin.
05:18We need to bring in competition.
05:20That I like.
05:22I am down with that, Mike.
05:23Because, again, who's earned this job?
05:27Who right now should we just be like,
05:29hey, Falcon fans, let's just throw the football out there
05:31and Michael Penix, we're about to go get 4,000 yards
05:33and 35 touchdowns.
05:36And nobody's proven that.
05:37No.
05:37And again, he's going to learn this new offense.
05:39We just talked about coaching him,
05:41and you heard the interview we played with John Gruden last week
05:43about him getting his hands on the playbook.
05:44But, I mean, he can't do anything yet.
05:47He can't practice.
05:48That's the problem.
05:49I know we're talking about practice.
05:51We're talking about practice.
05:52But he just can't start to, you know,
05:53if you say, well, is Penix Jr. right now better than,
05:56Tua can move.
05:58No, he can.
05:58And the thing is, it would have made it so crazy.
06:00Once he got nailed with the concussions,
06:02he was running into people's forearms.
06:04Remember that game against the gym?
06:05We're like, what are you doing?
06:06Get down.
06:07I would like to think he's figured that one out.
06:10The Dolphins moved on,
06:12and they're just basically blowing it all up.
06:13They're bringing in,
06:14I'm surprised that they're spending,
06:16whatever they're spending on Malik Willis,
06:17if I'm honest.
06:18I would think you just go with even,
06:19like a Jacoby Brissett,
06:20take your lumps,
06:21and go get your first round pick next year
06:23for your quarterback.
06:23That's how I feel.
06:24Do you guys not remember,
06:26and this is part of one of our listeners' discussions,
06:29he says,
06:29Dukes, man, I can't believe you're saying this.
06:31Tua's a better option.
06:32And he alludes to Tua's game here against us.
06:37But coming into that game,
06:39and I don't think you guys remember this,
06:40because I was like,
06:41they suck.
06:42And Tua's terrible right now.
06:44And he had come off of two consecutive games
06:46where he had thrown three interceptions.
06:49Dolphins' offense was inept.
06:50They didn't look like,
06:52they shouldn't even be on the field.
06:53And then he comes here
06:55and throws four touchdowns against us,
06:58and we made him look like a Hall of Famer,
07:00and everybody's like,
07:01oh!
07:02And Mike,
07:03it just showed the deficiencies in the coaching staff
07:06and what was going on with our team.
07:08I think it was much more about us
07:10than it was about them.
07:11Tua guys only threw for like 2,600 yards,
07:13and again,
07:14if they're going to do this,
07:15obviously we'll have to live with it.
07:17But for me right now,
07:18if you're giving me choices,
07:19this is not one that I would go after.
07:21And I think, Mike,
07:22the other reason they're very interested
07:24is the money.
07:25You said it.
07:26It's not going to cost you a lot
07:27because, again,
07:28the money he's already received
07:30and the cap hit with Miami,
07:31you don't have to pay him a lot
07:33to try to do this if you want to.
07:35Right.
07:35Again, he's got a lot of experience.
07:37He's cheap because the Dolphins
07:38are basically,
07:39they're on the hook.
07:40You just laid out the whole cap hit.
07:41So here's the thing.
07:42The completion percentage is intriguing,
07:4468%.
07:44That's way better than Panics Juniors
07:46throughout his first 12 games.
07:47Obviously, this guy's got more experience.
07:49Mike, shouldn't it have been better,
07:50though, with Cheetah?
07:52And you've got two $30 million wide receivers
07:55on each side of you.
07:56Correct.
07:56And that's why some people say
07:57you don't spend all that money
07:58on your wide receivers either way.
08:00But like,
08:01Tariq at the end,
08:01that thing went south.
08:02We get that.
08:03But you're right.
08:04This is why,
08:05I never understood why McDaniel
08:06got that last year in Miami
08:07in the first place.
08:08You know,
08:08because the offense wasn't that dynamic.
08:11But the completion percentage,
08:12at least high percentage throws,
08:14getting the ball to Drake,
08:16getting the ball to Pitts,
08:17you know,
08:17we can make a move,
08:17move the chains.
08:18And you've got B. John Robinson here.
08:20I mean,
08:20you do have some weapons around you.
08:22We just brought in
08:23Olamide Zaccheaus.
08:24We brought in Jahan Dotson.
08:25So again,
08:26some guys just hit us up on Twitter.
08:27Yawn.
08:28Okay.
08:30Well, again,
08:30we don't have all that cap space
08:32in the world.
08:33Some guys just say
08:33we should be spending free.
08:34I don't want to get
08:35in a free agent corner.
08:36We've already got Mike Hughes.
08:37Mike Hughes has been serviceable.
08:38He's under contract.
08:39You want to go draft
08:40another corner
08:41that can start as a nickel
08:42and work his way over
08:43to be in a cover corner?
08:44We can do that.
08:44But I mean,
08:45I get you.
08:46I mean,
08:46defensive tackle,
08:47we lost.
08:47We knew that Don Yamada
08:48was leaving.
08:49He's out the door.
08:50So, I mean,
08:50we're going to maybe
08:51get better through the draft.
08:52Maybe we trade down
08:53in the draft,
08:53pick up some extra pieces.
08:54But first things first,
08:55you don't have a starting quarterback
08:57to start the season.
08:58So you can get a guy
09:00for dirt cheap
09:00and then,
09:01yes,
09:01with all the baggage
09:02that Carl's talking about
09:03that makes him look
09:04like a giant pile of meh
09:05to a lot of Atlanta Falcons fans.
09:07Just a guy.
09:097-2-6-0-9-2-9.
09:11And if you feel differently,
09:12go vote.
09:13Polls up at
09:13Dukes and Bell 929
09:14or you can call us.
09:16And by the way,
09:16phone lines are open.
09:17You like any of these moves so far?
09:19You feeling halfway decent
09:21about some of the things?
09:22And again,
09:23Mike,
09:23right now,
09:24I don't think any of this is sexy.
09:26Well,
09:26he doesn't run.
09:27Tua does not run.
09:28I know he scrambles,
09:30but he's not a runner.
09:30No.
09:31You know what I mean?
09:31That's just not in his bag.
09:33Jalen Hurts was the guy
09:33that could run for Alabama
09:34back in the day.
09:35And you want Michael Penix
09:36to use his legs more.
09:37I want to take what they give you.
09:39He ran 20 times
09:41for 43 yards last year.
09:44That's not good.
09:45No.
09:45So he's not.
09:46Well,
09:46again,
09:46part of this,
09:47he was never a runner
09:48in the first place,
09:49but if you're talking about him
09:50moving around too much,
09:51no,
09:51he's not going to try
09:51to take that hit
09:52because the one hit
09:53could end the career.
09:54All right.
09:55While we're talking
09:55about all this stuff,
09:56we do want to mention
09:58the best edge rusher available.
10:00Max Crosby was traded.
10:02Can we hear Crosby,
10:03Big O,
10:03talk about this?
10:04Because at the end,
10:06I don't know if you guys
10:06remember this either,
10:07Mike,
10:07end of the season,
10:09they set him
10:10and he thought the Raiders
10:12were tanking,
10:12which they were,
10:13for the number one pick
10:14versus trying to compete.
10:16He didn't like it.
10:17So he goes to Davis,
10:18the owner,
10:19and is like,
10:19look,
10:20this doesn't sit well with me.
10:22Off season comes,
10:23he's like,
10:23I want to get out of here.
10:24I want to trade.
10:25And they gave it to him,
10:27but I think a lot of people
10:28thought he would end up
10:28somewhere else.
10:29Here's what Crosby had to say
10:31about being traded
10:31to the Ravens.
10:33I'm so excited.
10:34I love all of y'all,
10:36all my supporters,
10:37everyone tuning in.
10:38Football is my world,
10:39man.
10:39It's my passion.
10:41Since I was a child,
10:42I knew exactly what I wanted
10:43to do with my life.
10:44And that's to be the best
10:45football player in the world
10:46and help win a Super Bowl
10:48with whatever organization
10:49I'm with.
10:51So that never changes.
10:52It's Raider Nation for life,
10:53but right now,
10:54it's Flock Nation,
10:55and I'm all in.
10:57I'm going to give y'all
10:57everything I have
10:58in my heart and soul,
10:59man.
10:59And it's going to be
11:00an incredible journey,
11:01and we got work to do,
11:02man.
11:02But I love you guys.
11:04I appreciate you.
11:05Every single fan,
11:06everyone tuning in.
11:07The hate,
11:08the love,
11:09all that is welcome,
11:10man.
11:10It's understandable.
11:12But it's time
11:13for this next chapter.
11:14Two first-round picks.
11:15Now,
11:15you could argue
11:16the Ravens' first-round picks
11:17are always late.
11:18Late first-round picks,
11:19but still building blocks
11:20of your franchise,
11:21so a window.
11:21So now,
11:22ramp up the intensity
11:23on a first-year coach,
11:24ramp up the intensity
11:25on Lamar Jackson,
11:26right?
11:27We're trying to help you.
11:29This is a team
11:30which defensively,
11:31and it wasn't Chucks,
11:32they just didn't have
11:33the dogs because of
11:34injuries and everything else.
11:35They did not get after
11:36the quarterback.
11:36Just 30-some-odd sacks
11:37last year for the Ravens.
11:38Roquan Smith,
11:39Kyle Hamilton,
11:40both all pros,
11:41right?
11:42Hurt.
11:43Nate Wiggins,
11:44Marlon Humphreys,
11:45Metabuke up front.
11:46When he got hurt,
11:47that really hurt him.
11:48All these guys
11:49are coming back.
11:49Now you add Max Crosby
11:50to that mix,
11:51Ravens got something
11:52on defense.
11:52We'll see where it goes.
11:53We've got to mention this,
11:54and we will dive deeper
11:55into this story
11:56because Mike and I just
11:57we're looking at each other
11:58and shaking our heads,
11:59Mike,
11:59about JPJ.
12:01Yeah, man.
12:02Mark Ramondi,
12:03this is one that will
12:04require a full segment,
12:05but Mark Ramondi
12:06from ESPN,
12:06they've got more information.
12:07A lot has been redacted
12:09from the police reports
12:10in South Florida,
12:10but there's a lot of stuff
12:11out there that has
12:12a lot of Falcon fans
12:13probably shaking their heads
12:14saying this guy's never
12:14going to play again
12:15for this team.
12:16All right.
12:17You haven't heard.
12:18Just stay there.
12:19We're going to get to it.
12:20Trust us.
12:21But coming up,
12:22Wes Durham,
12:23the voice of our Falcons.
12:24You get a chance to hear him
12:26doing college football,
12:27college basketball,
12:28which is what he's doing now,
12:29but he was also
12:30the longtime voice
12:31of Georgia Tech.
12:32What does he think
12:33about the Georgia Tech
12:33hoop situation?
12:34And we'll ask him
12:35about the ACC
12:36because a lot of people
12:37all of a sudden
12:37are saying Duke
12:39is the team to beat.
12:40It's Dukes and Bells.
