00:00Golden hour on a street that might as well be paved with gold.
00:04Between 2024 and 2025, Mount Pleasant Road right here in the heart of Tunbridge Wells
00:12raked in nearly a million pounds in penalty charge notices.
00:18That would make it the worst road in Kent for such fines, based on the data obtained
00:24by Confused.com.
00:2742% of all PCNs here in Tunbridge Wells were made along this road, locals blame poor signage
00:36near the bus zone.
00:38I definitely think the signage could be improved to make it more of a deterrent.
00:42Yeah, it's fair enough if the cars aren't allowed to go through but they should have clearer signs.
00:45I know lots and lots of people who've been caught.
00:48I see it all the time, I wait at the bus stop and I see them coming.
00:52I think another £70.
00:54I think that's what I fell foul of and I know ignorance isn't a defence but I really
00:59genuinely hadn't seen the signage properly and so I think it's probably a common thing.
01:03Highway signage is managed by Kent County Council who took over enforcement from Tunbridge Wells
01:10Borough Council in October last year.
01:13The County Council says it has redesigned the scheme to comply with updated legislation
01:20and has installed new signage that goes beyond the required standards.
01:26While the Borough Council says the scheme was designed to make the town safer, something
01:32locals hope they won't have to pay such a steep price for going forward.
