The Rhythm Dukes — Flashback 1970 (USA, west coast psych rock)

When Moby Grape ran into trouble in 1969, guitarist Jerry Miller formed a temporary lineup called The Rhythm Dukes. The core of the band, along with himself, included Moby Grape members Don Stevenson and John Oxendine. They were joined by bassist John Barrett. Stevenson, although a drummer, played guitar, which he disliked, and he soon left the band. He was replaced by guitarist and keyboardist Bill Champlin, who became Miller's primary collaborator on this album, recorded in 1970. The Rhythm Dukes shared the stage with such artists as Albert Collins, Lee Michaels, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Canned Heat, Grateful Dead, and Cat Mother & The All Night Newsboys. This continued until 1971. But Miller and Moby Grape remained committed to Columbia Records, and Bill Champlin formed The Sons of Champlin and essentially left the group. Moby Grape reformed and began recording "20 Granite Creek" (1971), which capped the commercial failure of this otherwise legendary group. Jerry Miller later formed the Jerry Miller Band, and Bill Champlin joined Chicago in 1981 and played there for a long time.
