War looms over the Strait of Hormuz, off southern Iran, as the global economy bears the consequences of Tehran’s response to the February 28 US and Israeli attacks.

Maritime traffic data, satellite imagery and verified videos point to significant disruption in the region, showing damage to oil and gas infrastructure and several commercial vessels amid the escalating conflict between Israel, the United States, and Iran.

00:00These points and triangles represent ships in the Strait of Hormuz and hardly
00:04any are passing through anymore. Here's the maritime traffic before the American
00:09Israeli attacks on Iran. Here's the current traffic. It dropped by 80%
00:15between February 28th and March 1st, according to the British maritime
00:19security agency UKMTO. The Strait, located south of Iran, is at the heart of
00:25the war. Its closure could have global consequences. Around 20% of the world's
00:31oil and liquefied natural gas transits through here. In response to the US and
00:36Israeli attacks, Iran has threatened to close the Strait. And on March 2nd, a
00:41senior Iranian military official threatened to set on fire any ship
00:44crossing the Strait of Hormuz. Tankers carrying petroleum products are mostly
00:50at a standstill, clustered in these anchoring zones off the region's main
00:53ports. They fear attack from Iranian drones and missiles, which have already
01:00struck at least four ships, according to Le Monde's tally. The Skylight was the first
01:04tanker hit on March 1st. Four crew members were injured. Since then, at least four
01:12other vessels have been targeted. Aboard the MKD Viome, one employee died in the
01:17engine room. Several oil and gas facilities have also been hit or damaged by
01:21bombings. Images analyzed by Le Monde show Saudi Aramco's Rastanura facility in flames on March 2nd,
01:36as well as the Fujairah facility in the UAE. This traffic halt in the Strait of Hormuz is already having
01:45consequences.
01:46The reduced supply to global markets for oil and gas is driving up prices for both commodities.
01:52The Brent crude barrel from the North Sea, the international benchmark, has risen in recent days.
01:59The Strait of Hormuz, which includes supply from Qatar and UAE, accounts for about 20% of global LNG supply.
02:07So we're kind of entering an unprecedented era, much larger, in my opinion, than what we saw in the Ukraine
02:12-Russia crisis.
02:17This is the last 1st.
