A derelict town-centre building in Ashford that's due to be redeveloped into flats has been badly damaged in a fire.

The site, which has stood empty for more than two decades, was recently signed off for demolition and redevelopment into 34 flats.

00:00As you can see, fire crews are only just now starting to leave Swanton House in Ashford
00:04after a fire broke out last night, just days after it was signed off to be demolished and
00:10turned into 34 flats.
00:12Pictures show the property engulfed in flames with thick black smoke coming from the site.
00:17Fire crews have been at the scene since 8.30pm last night, with six fire engines originally
00:23being called to tackle the fire.
00:25One eyewitness told Kent Online that the building seemed like it was coming down.
00:29I could hear tiles falling off the roof.
00:31Quite a few people were watching, the fire was on top of the building.
00:36This morning a fire spokesman said three fire engines and a hype vehicle remain on site to
00:41continue extinguishing the fire.
00:43Now it seems to be just two fire engines which are now leaving and the hype vehicle also seems
00:49to be gone.
00:49As you can see there are hoardings around the building and this is because demolition was
00:54due to begin in the coming months, with the flats planned to be finished by next year.
00:58But whether or not that will be postponed is now a question.
