This week was the end of one lollipop lady's time keeping children safe at Maudene primary.

Karen Jones picked up the high vis back 1993 - and has been part of the school community ever since.

00:05After 32 years, it was always going to be an emotional goodbye, but for Chatham Lollipop
00:14Lady Karen Jones, a road-themed rendition of Let It Go by hundreds of pupils here at
00:22the Maudine School was utterly unexpected.
00:25Yeah, I am feeling emotional because I wasn't expecting anything like this.
00:30The nice things are when I see the children that used to be here and they're bringing
00:34their children, you know, it's nice to know that they still want to come back as well.
00:40Yeah, no, it's, it is.
00:42Every day is a highlight day really.
00:44It's little wonder, gifts and gratitude were in equal measure for the dinner lady turned
00:50warden of road safety.
00:52And she's that starting point every morning, she's building up those relationships with
00:55new people, new families all of the time.
00:58They know her by name and she knows them by name.
01:01And it's also making sure our children are safe.
01:03Heron Way and Solarise are getting busier and she ensures that they are safely crossing before
01:09any accidents happen and she's been there doing it for generations.
01:13Karen has been a pillar of the community.
01:16Their children here will be sad to see her go.
01:20She's not just known as the lollipop lady, she's also a caring dinner lady and she, every
01:28day I go up to her and all the other dinner ladies and make sure she's okay and she makes
01:33sure that everyone else is okay and she really puts care into our school.
01:36On the roads, she helps us get across the roads and when we're in a rush to school she makes
01:42our school runs quicker.
01:44How do you feel about her going?
01:46It's, it's a really bad loss for the school, I feel like the school will be different,
01:51especially on the playgrounds.
01:53Tears and smiles all round, one thing is for certain though, whoever picks up the lollipop
02:01stick next will have big shoes to fill.
