A waste recycling site said to be emitting a “full stench” has had its environmental permit revoked after its operator lost an appeal. A planning inspector upheld a decision by the Environment Agency to issue a revocation notice against Mineral Processing Ltd, at South Elmsall.

00:06appeal by the operator, Mineral Processing Limited, also known as Minery.
00:10The Environment Agency issued a recovation notice following years of complaints from residents about persistent odour, dust and litter.
00:18A hearing was held before the planning inspectorate last December.
00:21In a published decision, the inspector concluded the site's operation presented a real and ongoing risk to both the environment
00:28and human health.
00:29The report recorded 66 breaches of permit conditions over a nine-year period from 2016 to 2025 and agreed with
00:37previous finding that nearby watercourses, including Frickley Beck, could be affected.
00:42Hundreds of residents have said the stench and dust have disrupted their daily lives and affected their health.
00:48Local councillor Michelle Collin said residents had been treated unfairly and that the revocation was long overdue.
00:54Normanton and Hemsworth MP John Trickett described the harm caused to residents and the surrounding environment as significant and pledged
01:01to press for full compliance with the inspector's decision.
01:04The Environment Agency said it would continue to closely monitor the site and expects the operator to comply with all
01:10steps in the revocation notice.
01:12The company said it is currently complying with regulatory notices, sampling water regularly and disputes any effect on Frickley Beck.
01:20It also warned that employees could be at risk if operations cease.
01:24A further public inquiry is scheduled to consider a planning appeal over the site's future operations.
