00:00For the 74th time in Formula One Championship history, we are stateside.
00:05It is time to go racing in the USA from Miami in Florida.
00:10Welcome to the fifth round of the Formula One World Championship.
00:13In 2023, we are all set to do battle with Sergio Perez knowing
00:18this could be the day that he leads the World Championship for the very first time.
00:23And for Formula One in Miami, it's race on and we've got a good getaway for Perez.
00:29He chops across Alonso and he maintains the lead into Turn 1.
00:33Alonso trying that outside line, it won't work.
00:35Up to fourth place goes Pierre Gasly, down a couple of positions goes Kevin Magnussen.
00:40So big winner at the start was also George Russell, he is up a place.
00:42It's Perez with the lead, signs on the charge.
00:45Max Verstappen down a place to 10th place on that hard compounded tire.
00:49Didn't get the launch that he wanted, trying to fight back against Esteban Ocon
00:52as they take it through the sweepers on lap one.
00:55Yeah, that was a little bit tardy for Max Verstappen
00:57and very cautious as he ran it into Turn 1.
01:00You could see he took that outside line,
01:02but there wasn't the same commitment that we'd normally see from him.
01:05So taking definitely a longer-term view,
01:08there was a little bit of action down towards the back.
01:10There was no contact, I don't believe, but so far clean on this ultimate lap.
01:14I think it was maybe Nick de Vries that got a little bit hot in there into Turn 1,
01:17maybe some help because he's fallen all the way back to last,
01:19as we see a lot of action here through Turn 11.
01:21Verstappen making the move on Esteban Ocon.
01:23So Verstappen back to where he started the Grand Prix in 9th place.
01:27That was the move at Turn 11 for him.
01:29You heard the you from the crowd as he made that late-breaking move.
01:32A lot of confidence, no DRS at this stage.
01:35And this is on board with Lewis Hamilton.
01:38Finds himself using the middle part of the circuit into Turn 1.
01:42Let's hit someone.
01:43Okay, copy, everything looks okay at the moment.
01:46Yeah, it was just a kiss, wasn't it?
01:48It wasn't a full-on hit, and then...
01:49Lander being hit, and that's why Race Control were investigating it.
01:52We had to freeze into the back of the McLaren, both of them able to continue.
01:56There he is, the reigning world champion,
01:58heading down to where he picked a place of Ocon one lap ago.
02:01And one more place picked up again here.
02:03Runs a little bit deep, but manages to keep it on track.
02:07Side by side through Turn 12 here.
02:10Oh, making the move, forcing away by, and trying to defend the position.
02:14The Haas driver driving on the mirrors at the moment,
02:17because there is Charles Leclerc, and there is Max Verstappen,
02:20the driver we're on board with, and mistake for Kevin Magnussen.
02:23Here we went on board with him when he was checking the mirrors,
02:25and now he's got the Ferrari tucked underneath him,
02:28and Verstappen for company as well, with this slippery Red Bull getting ever closer all of the time.
02:33Can Leclerc make the move into the braking zone of 17?
02:36Max Verstappen had a lot of momentum there.
02:38He's like, oh wait, I've got the car, and through goes Charles Leclerc to improve up a place.
02:42Magnussen, as you would expect, keeping his foot in,
02:45but it's Leclerc with the momentum, it's Leclerc with the place,
02:48and Magnussen's going to try and fight back.
02:50Now we've got DRS enabled, say goodbye to the Red Bull.
02:54That is absolutely outrageous in another league when he used the DRS,
02:59and he goes past the Haas and the Ferrari.
03:04And that's on board, late lunge to the inside, and finding a way by,
03:08past George Russell.
03:09Max Verstappen moves up to fifth position.
03:12You saw it, driver's eye view, and Russell, can he chase back?
03:16He's got the DRS, but so has Max Verstappen, and that is fifth place,
03:20and a crucial move after what happened last week.
03:23There's no point for Gasly to fight Verstappen.
03:26He will know it, and it will be another pass in a few,
03:29but you see almost standing on the brakes, almost waving him by,
03:32eventually making the move.
03:34Gasly will focus on Russell behind,
03:35and he waited such a long time for Verstappen to get through,
03:38he's brought himself into a battle with George Russell here.
03:41Yeah, Gasly just should have gave that up.
03:43He tried to ride it around the outside.
03:45Russell to the inside, and Gasly opened the door for Verstappen,
03:50and inadvertently lit the Mercedes through.
03:53That's a move that's been a long time coming for Charles Leclerc to the inside of Magnussen.
03:58Magnussen relishing fighting the Ferrari,
04:00and he fights back to hold on to seventh, and Leclerc will be fuming with this.
04:05He's been looking at the rear wing of the Haas as Ocon joins the party.
04:09Seventh, eighth of ninth, all in your picture.
04:11You've got to imagine he's going to make pretty short work of Sainz.
04:14And here's the move.
04:16Sainz can't defend, even if he wanted to.
04:19And another place gained for Verstappen, who is treating this like the F1 game on the PlayStation.
04:25Sector easy at the moment.
04:28It is a Miami masterclass for Verstappen so far.
04:32The world championship leader up against the two-time world champion,
04:37highly regarded Fernando Alonso.
04:39There's the DRS, there's the move to the inside.
04:43There is second position for Max Verstappen, who is putting on a show for the Miami crowd.
04:52The two Spanish drivers close once again, but Alonso able to do enough,
04:57coming out of turn 16, the traction zone that takes you onto the back straight.
05:00But Sainz really getting ever more impatient as he tries to fight his way back and impatient enough
05:07to send it to the pits.
05:08His Ferrari crew will welcome him, but that was both front wheels locked up for Sainz as he came in.
05:14Real disappointment for Ferrari and the Spanish driver fighting for the podium today.
05:19He's got a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
05:22Max Verstappen is up into the lead of the race now because Perez makes his stop.
05:27He needs a clean stop out there and he needs to push on, try and maintain that gap.
05:32That's exactly what he needed.
05:34A slow stop there could have left him in the gaggle with Hülkenberg and Hamilton,
05:38but that's 2.2.
05:39It is working amazingly for Red Bull in all departments this year.
05:44Alonso is into the pits.
05:46He's just gone past our commentary box and Alonso is into the pits from second place.
05:51Further back though, there's another tidy pass through goes.
05:54Magnussen pass.
05:55Joe Guanyu there.
05:56Here's Fernando Alonso and he has been cleared by Carlos Sainz flashing by there,
06:02but Sainz does have that five-second penalty.
06:05So all the hard work done in that round of pit stops undone by that pit lane speed infringement.
06:12But in a bit you need to let me know what the limitation on the medium has so we don't
06:16know what to do with the front wing.
06:18Max, I'm looking at that on the pit wall.
06:20Will you focus on driving, please?
06:23Oh, right, okay.
06:24To your comment about the engineers having to kind of coach the drivers a little bit.
06:29All right, Max.
06:29It's almost the exact opposite of that famous Kimi Raikkonen call,
06:32leave me alone, I know what I'm doing.
06:34Max is saying, I want more information.
06:35The engineers are saying, leave me alone and focus on what you're doing.
06:40Carlos Sainz trying to fight his way through for a first podium of the season.
06:44Fernando Alonso has the slipstream, has the pass.
06:48And that is a slam dunk move for the two-time world champion.
06:54Mercedes straight line speed has not been a strong suit so far this season.
06:58But with the help of DRS, through goes George Russell.
07:01He improves another position.
07:02He's up to seventh.
07:03Next car up the road is his teammate.
07:08That's, you know the song, I've got that loving feeling.
07:10Well, Checo's just got that sinking feeling.
07:13That's the same lap time that he's doing on some fresher rubber.
07:17So he's inside the 17 second window.
07:20That's the good news.
07:21That's the strong start to the sentence for Sergio Perez.
07:24The bad news is there's going to be a softer compound on his teammate's car.
07:28Low fuel, a maximum attack for Max Verstappen,
07:30trying to win his third Grand Prix of the year.
07:34So you want two tenths quicker than Checo in sector two.
07:37It's all tenths four, five and six.
07:39He's pushing the tyre.
07:40It is getting gusty out there, Max.
07:42So just take care in that section.
07:43Whilst we were hearing from Giampiero Lambesi,
07:46another pass for Fernando Alonso.
07:48The oldest driver in the field up to third position.
07:52Here's Verstappen on the radio.
07:54Effective track position is around five seconds behind Checo.
07:58Obviously, the longer we can extend this, the better.
08:01So that's the current state of the race and the Haas there with the DRS open.
08:06There's quite a lot of pursuing cars behind, but there's Hülkenberg in second place.
08:11That's a move to the inside for Stroll, trying to get past Gasly.
08:15Gasly won't want to give that one up.
08:16Gasly will not give that one up.
08:18And there's no grip offline there with Magnussen closing in on the Canadian driver ahead.
08:23Is this the moment finally for Charles Leclerc to use the superior performance of the Ferrari?
08:29He waits, he gets on the brakes late, and he finally takes the place.
08:33Through goes Charles Leclerc to 11th position,
08:36and he will try and fight his way through for better points later on.
08:41That was really interesting, wasn't it?
08:42It looked like I said...
08:43Not again! Not again!
08:45Magnussen's throwing it to the inside.
08:47Leclerc feels the need to open the door.
08:49There's no grip out there for Charles.
08:51And Magnussen does the up and under.
08:53Once again, he uses the DRS zone, and he powers back past the Ferrari.
08:59George Russell with the move on Carlos Sainz to the inside.
09:03And Russell has kept his head and picked his way back past the Ferrari.
09:08Russell will try and close down the gap on Fernando Alonso.
09:11At the same corner, further down the order,
09:14Charles Leclerc's frustration, which was high after yesterday,
09:17will be going through the roof,
09:18because Magnussen just has a response every single time he is passed by this driver so far.
09:25He is just absolutely elbows out, and I love it.
09:28He's driving for points.
09:29He does not get this opportunity.
09:30We talked about this at the top of the show.
09:32He needs to capitalize on these opportunities.
09:35When you get a little bit of a higher grit slot than you normally do,
09:39you've got to pull it off.
09:40And look, they just do not have the closing rate.
09:42It's crazy.
09:43Is he playing the tactical game here?
09:45Does he not want to give Magnussen the chance in the second DRS zone?
09:49I wonder whether Charles Leclerc has waited here.
09:51Lewis Hamilton makes his stop.
09:53And Charles Leclerc says,
09:54you're not doing the up and under this time.
09:56I'm getting to turn number one.
09:57I'm going through enough of this already.
10:01And the Ferrari goes on by.
10:03Great battle between these two in the race.
10:06Here is the race leader.
10:08Max Verstappen has spent 45 laps on this hard tire.
10:12He's going to get rid of it, and Perez is on the left-hand side of your picture.
10:16It's a great stop when required.
10:193.1 seconds means that it's the medium tire on the world champion's car.
10:24As he tries to win from ninth on the grid, he will have to overtake his teammate on track.
10:31Sergio Perez back into the lead, but look at the stint that Max Verstappen was able to put together.
10:36He's got medium tires, and he's got the latter stages of the race.
10:40The Bulls about to do battle again.
10:45Closing up into turn 11, Max Verstappen will have an amazing opportunity into the hairpin of turn 17.
10:52He's got the superior grip, and this is all about traction.
10:54Up three meters, and then back down three meters through 14 and 15.
10:59Here comes the moment. This was all lined up with a superb stint on the hard tire.
11:04Now on the medium Pirelli rubber, we're watching Max Verstappen gain with every meter.
11:09His teammate ahead, his rival for the world championship ahead.
11:12He will pull out of the slipstream. Max Verstappen on the attack.
11:16Defense offered for Perez. The Bulls going wheel to wheel.
11:19Perez shows him the outside line, but there'll be better traction for Max Verstappen, who stands on the throttle.
11:24He'll get DRS again. We'll fight it to turn one. Can Perez offer a defensive line to the inside?
11:30He's got no other choice. The Bulls wheel to wheel around the outside.
11:34Will it be the lead? It's close between the two of them. The crowd are rolling.
11:38And Max Verstappen takes the lead of the Miami Grand Prix, having started ninth on the grid.
11:44He's passed his teammate. He's passed all of them.
11:48This is good stuff as we take another look coming out of turn 19.
11:52Just helping himself to a little bit more DRS, and then whether it's going to be contact,
11:58and then traction zone, job done, race lead.
12:02A few Max fans in the audience, I suppose.
12:05I think she was pleased with the move, and he will be delighted.
12:11Canadian driver Lance Stroll, does he have a car's width around the outside?
12:14Williams was drifting back to him on the racing line, and Albon is trying to close the door.
12:19Albon was protesting, wasn't he, on the radio? He didn't like what they did with the strategy today.
12:25He won't like the Aston Martin taking the outside line.
12:30And I can tell you, as Lance Stroll made the place, Hinch was waiting to see the Williams steam to
12:35the inside there, and it never materialized.
12:41Great run for the Japanese.
12:43He was thinking about the dart to the inside. He says, okay, I'll take the racing line. That's late on
12:48the brakes.
12:48But that's the position for Yuki Tsunoda, who's now up to 11th place, and this season he has only finished
12:5511th or higher.
12:56Can he keep the Alfa Romeo behind?
12:58Tsunoda has five seconds to the old hard tires of Kevin Magnussen.
13:03He's got a few laps to try and give it everything to attack.
13:06Strong result in qualifying for Gasly especially, and he's hanging on well there up in P6.
13:11Ocon and P9 for now, for both of those.
13:14Gasly might be under quite a bit of pressure here from Charles Leclerc.
13:18Charles Leclerc building up to 195 miles per hour.
13:23Frenchman puts it on the apex, locks up though, and opens the door.
13:27And that is a position gained for Charles Leclerc.
13:30Monogas driver goes through, and he's up to sixth place now.
13:34Will Hamilton be able to make the move immediately? He will.
13:37And he strikes against the Alpine, up to seventh position for the driver who started this Grand Prix in 13th
13:43place.
13:44Hamilton trying to keep a really good run going in the USA.
13:49Here's another battle. Cars Whip has been left.
13:52The Ferrari driver and Cars Whip taken by the Mercedes driver of Lewis Hamilton,
13:57who hammers through up to sixth position.
14:00That's a good recovery drive if you consider he was not in a good place earlier on.
14:06He said, after qualifying yesterday, the expectation was minimum P2.
14:13And you know when he says minimum P2, the expectation was first place in the race.
14:18Outstanding performance for the reigning world champion.
14:22Max Verstappen comes out of the final corners.
14:25Max Verstappen wins the Miami Grand Prix with a masterclass of performance.
14:30Ninth on the grid to the top step of the podium.
14:34Another red ball.
14:35One, two, thanks to Sergio Perez, who had no answer to his teammate.
14:40But he will fight back another day.
14:42And Fernando Alonso looking to make it four podiums for the season.
14:48Another supreme performance for him as well.
14:51He's getting used to standing in third place.
14:54He'll be there again in a few moments time.
14:58And handshakes between the two teammates.
15:00What a performance for Verstappen, who is pointing to where he finished the race.
15:05The world champion heading to the top step once again.
15:09It's a dominant car, but that was some performance to come through the field at will.
15:13Yeah, it was a good, good race.
15:16I mean, I stayed out of trouble in the beginning.
15:18And then, yeah, just had a clean race, you know, picked the cars off one by one.
15:22And then I could stay out really long on the hard tires.
15:25And that's where we, I think, made the difference today.
15:28And, yeah, then a good little battle with Cecho at the end.
15:30So, yeah, we all kept it clean.
15:32And that's the most important.
15:33And, yeah, great, great win today.
15:35Does it feel that extra bit special when you've come through from so far back to beat you,
15:40especially to beat your teammate right at the end of the race there?
15:43Yeah, I mean, yesterday was, of course, a bit of a setback.
15:45But, yeah, today we just kept it calm, kept it clean.
15:48And, yeah, for sure, winning a race from B9 is always very satisfying.
15:53And whose idea was it to do a different strategy, starting on the hard tire?
15:58Well, you know, we started talking about it yesterday.
16:01We didn't know what the weather would do, but we were quite confident that this would pay off.
16:05And luckily it did today.
16:06Just going back away.
16:06Come back.
16:06now let
