00:01Welcome along to round 14 of the Formula One World Championship in 2021.
00:06We're at Monza. It is the Italian Grand Prix.
00:13As we look to the grid now, five lights on ahead of the drivers.
00:17It's lights out and away we go. They weren't held for long.
00:20And Verstappen does get away well. Alongside him is Daniel Ricciardo.
00:23Ricciardo is inching into the lead.
00:25Daniel Ricciardo will have the inside line here ahead of Max Verstappen.
00:28Hamilton has gone away well too. It's Ricciardo into the first chicane ahead of Verstappen.
00:33Hamilton on the outside of Lando Norris.
00:34Giovinazzi has made up a place past Carlos Sainz.
00:37And he's now battling with Charles Leclerc. And to the curve of Grande we go.
00:40That was perfect for Hamilton. Straight up into third place.
00:43Went around the outside of Turn 2. He's directly behind his championship rival. Indeed he's alongside him.
00:49And Hamilton and Verstappen go into the second chain.
00:52And a chicane and Hamilton goes off onto the rumble strips.
00:55And it's fourth wide and he might lose a place here to Lando Norris.
00:58As Antonio Giovinazzi has spun round and loses his front wing.
01:02It is Ricciardo that leads from Verstappen. Norris and Hamilton is back and forth.
01:07And that will be a safety car unless he can drive that quickly out of the way.
01:11There will be body work on the track as well. They say he has got away.
01:14So that's good news then for the race. Bad news for Lewis Hamilton in terms of he looked like he
01:20was going to challenge for second place.
01:21Take second place. And he slipped back.
01:23And we've got a virtual safety car as we look back to the De La Ruggia chicane.
01:28And not for the first time in a chicane this season.
01:30Wheel contact between Verstappen and Hamilton.
01:35He pushed me wide.
01:37Copy.
01:39So Verstappen was a little bit locked up going in there.
01:43And yeah, look at that.
01:45Did he get hit by Carlos Sainz there, Antonio Giovinazzi?
01:49We're riding on board with him now. Charles Leclerc to the left.
01:55Oh, so he's gone straight across the chicane then. And somebody's presumably to his left at that point.

02:04Happy to carry on.
02:06Let's look at the race start once again.
02:08Dream start here for Daniel Ricciardo.
02:11They all got away quite well, didn't they?
02:13But Ricciardo just in the second and third sort of phase, pulling up through the gears.
02:18Powered through, then had the inside line.
02:20I always think it's a little bit odd. I know it's the racing line on the left-hand side,
02:23but it does leave you on pole position. It does leave you vulnerable.
02:27Hamilton then clean and clear as you like around the outside of Norris
02:31and picks up the slipstream of Max Verstappen
02:34and will be alongside heading into the second chicane.
02:37It's absolutely flat out through Cerva Grande for anybody and everybody,
02:41wherever you are on the racetrack.
02:42And there we go. That, a little bit Imola-esque, wasn't it?
02:46Yes, it was.
02:46In terms of the action there with Verstappen on the inside.
02:50And look at this, the first time Ricciardo's led a race since Abu Dhabi 2018.
02:56Which, of course, was his last race for Red Bull.
02:58And he leads from his former Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen,
03:01who's now got DRS and is less than a second behind him on the road.
03:05Now we're on board with Lewis Hamilton and watching a replay here
03:08as he tries to get alongside Max Verstappen.
03:11How did you see this, Martin?
03:12Wheel contact there.
03:13Hamilton pushed wide.
03:15It's one of those, to me, racing incidents that you often get
03:18and we've seen before.
03:19On the first lap, I can't really see that...
03:22Oh yeah, so this is what happened.
03:23Giovinazzi comes back on the track in an unsafe manner.
03:29And that's getting a touch rude between the Aston Martin drivers.
03:32That'll make the debrief a bit interesting, won't it?
03:35Yeah, it's cost Vettel dearly, hasn't it?
03:37Cost him three places in the end, four places in the end,
03:40as Latifi gets past him as well, as Pierre Gasly gets out of his car.
03:44Not one, but two Alfa Tauris out of this race.
03:47Last year's race winner, Pierre Gasly, never got the chance to get going this afternoon.
03:52Bottas up to 13th already.
03:54That's good early progress from the back of the grid.
03:57It certainly is, as we hear that noises radio.
03:59Hamilton is struggling when he gets close.
04:01We're getting good gaps to the rest of the field.
04:03Keep this up.
04:05Well, Joseph, his race engineer, giving him the encouragement message
04:08as we head to Sky Race Control and Paul de Resta.
04:11Yeah, just one thing, Crofty Perez has made good ground.
04:13The Ferraris have got as much pace as the McLaren's.
04:16But the thing for me is, Perez could very much play a part.
04:19Because he started on the better tire, he's going to stop early in Hamilton
04:23and he's going to maybe gain track position when he comes out on a fresh set.
04:26And that could hurt Mercedes. Perez could play that part of support.
04:30Well, here is Perez trying to play that part very nicely indeed.
04:34But back comes Carlos Sainz. Perez thought he got that move done.
04:37Round the curva grande we go.
04:39Carlos Sainz is about three quarters of a car left in front.
04:42Perez has got the inside line, so he's coming back at the Ferrari.
04:45And Sergio Perez to the De La Roger chicane is in front of Carlos Sainz.
04:52Yeah, he's gone, look, he's gone really deep.
04:54And that makes the right-hander really tight.
04:57He knew immediately he'd got to go and cover the inside.
05:00Slightly compromised exit. The job done.
05:05And as we've seen, some higher dig on a couple of the medium runners.
05:08We just need to make sure we can make our target.
05:11Maybe Mercedes got it absolutely spot on then.
05:14If you can survive the start here, the hard tire they say becomes a very nice race tire.
05:20Hamilton's, well, front left certainly looks in a decent condition at the moment.
05:23Ted, down to you.
05:24They just had to do, Mercedes just had to do something that confused Red Bull, didn't they?
05:27And I think they have, but it might turn out to be a nice stretcher yet.
05:30And in fact, I think both McLarens are doing both championship contenders,
05:34Verstappen and Hamilton, a favor.
05:36And for Hamilton to be still in touch.
05:38Ted, Hamilton is a lot closer to Lando Norris.
05:40I'm just going to stop you there because I think Hamilton with a bit of DRS here
05:43as Norris tries to break the toe is going to go for a move under braking.
05:47Lando Norris just squeezes Lewis Hamilton to the far left-hand side.
05:51And very gently and very subtly there, stop Hamilton from making a risky move.
05:55But Hamilton's going to come back at him, not just through the Curva Grande,
05:59but towards the De La Rogge chicane.
06:01And Hamilton on the inside has got enough of a gap there.
06:03Has he got the pace in a straight fight with Norris?
06:06Not on this occasion, Norris under braking.
06:08Holds on to that third place.
06:09Yeah, a little check in his mirrors for Lando Norris.
06:11So positioned his car well.
06:12He moved abruptly, but cleanly down the pit straight.
06:16Difficult to see how much, how far behind him Hamilton was there.
06:20But good defensive driving from Lando Norris.
06:23And you can tell Lewis was just pulling his punches there.
06:26He does not need to trip over that McLaren.
06:31As Ricciardo now comes in and we can go down to Ted.
06:33Yeah, so this needs to be good for McLaren.
06:35He comes in, hits his marks very well.
06:38The tyres come off, the new tyres go on.
06:40That's perfect, absolutely perfect.
06:42I can't believe is Verstappen in?
06:44Surely not, Crofty.
06:45Surely he's gone through.
06:46So Red Bull were just out, just covering if they needed to.
06:49But that was excellent.
06:50So that was McLaren avoiding Verstappen doing the undercar.
06:53Right, let's have it.
06:54Right, so out comes Daniel Ricciardo behind the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz.
06:59So what I think that would have been for Red Bull is do whatever he doesn't do.
07:03He pits, you carry on.
07:06Keep the pressure on.
07:07And it wasn't a super quick stop for McLaren.
07:10Yeah, my tyres are f***ed.
07:13His tyres are shot, says Max Verstappen, who has a 31% chance of an overtake dropping down to a
07:2027% chance of an overtake and dropping down all the time.
07:23This lap continues.
07:24Our predicted gap powered by AWS as he's now told to come in and box by the Red Bull team.
07:30So what's kind of out-lap is Ricciardo, who's a little bit tucked up behind Sainz at the moment.
07:35Ricciardo has had a personal best middle sector.
07:38He's having a decent out-lap as Daniel.
07:40So Lando Norris takes the lead.
07:42Lewis Hamilton in second.
07:43Then comes Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez.
07:45And he's still waiting.
07:46It's Max Verstappen.
07:47What is happening?
07:48Down at Red Bull, the kings of the sub-2 second pit stop.
07:52They'll be lucky if that's sub-10 seconds.
07:54No, 11 seconds on the grid for Max Verstappen, who will come out into this race a long way behind
08:00Daniel Ricciardo and potentially behind Valtteri Bottas as well.
08:04And there comes Lance Stroll behind Valtteri Bottas.
08:08And we still see no sign of Max Verstappen, who comes out into this race in 10th place.
08:13He's gone from second to 10th by an 11 second stationary stop in the pit lane.
08:17Every twist and turn is critical for the World Championship.
08:21And that stop has put him completely out of contention.
08:25Releases Ricciardo beautifully up front, doesn't it?
08:29So Lewis Hamilton out in front now, ahead of Lando Norris.
08:34Norris was ahead of Hamilton, who's got past him on the road.
08:38And in the swing of about half a minute, this championship race has been blown wide open all again.
08:44And this is how Hamilton got past Lando Norris into the De La Roger chicane.
08:48Nice work Lewis, this is off. Come on mate.
08:52It's on and it is happening right in front of our eyes.
08:56Verstappen was a comfortable second place challenging Daniel Ricciardo.
09:01A slow pit stop down at Red Bull and we can look at it now as they adjust the front
09:05wing angle.
09:06And then what is going on? Why is Max Verstappen still stationary?
09:09What the **** talk?
09:15Norris ahead of you. Norris ahead.
09:17Yeah, I can see that for ****.
09:19I'll leave you to it.
09:21Yeah, just come on the radio whenever it's critical of it.
09:24**** ****.
09:26Hamilton now does come in to the pits.
09:30And that is a little bit slow as well, but not half as slow as it was for Max Verstappen.
09:354.2 seconds for Hamilton in his pit stop.
09:38And I know they've changed the procedures at the pit stops, but we're not expecting times to be that much
09:44slower.
09:44Maybe by a couple of tenths, Hamilton comes out onto the race track now.
09:49And is he going to be ahead of Lando Norris? That's the big key.
09:53No, he's not.
09:54And there's Max Verstappen right behind Hamilton into the first chicane once again.
09:58It's wheel to wheel. Hamilton and Verstappen.
10:00And this time Verstappen and Hamilton have crashed out.
10:03And they are both out.
10:05As Hamilton came from his pit stop, rejoined the race track.
10:10Lando Norris was ahead and in their desperation to stay ahead and to get ahead,
10:15the two championship protagonists have taken each other out of the Italian Grand Prix.
10:22What a bizarre incident.
10:25Absolutely bizarre.
10:27And Lewis is trying to get out of that load.
10:30That's where you get where you don't leave the space.
10:34Behind the safety car now, we have the pit stops.
10:37Out in front was Charles Leclerc.
10:41And Charles Leclerc, you see, the Ferrari fans are going absolutely wild here.
10:44And so they should.
10:45Because taking his pit stop behind the safety car will do Charles Leclerc at no end of good.
10:51He's in second place behind Ricciardo.
10:53They've tripped over each other.
10:55But I'm trying to think, I'm trying to remember an incident like that
10:59where one car just literally climbs up the front of another and stays there.
11:02This is, it's back to Prost and Senna days, isn't it?
11:05And so the chicane at Suzuka and the animosity that went with that.
11:11Let us have a little look then at what happened.
11:14Hamilton on the right-hand side coming out of his, out of the pit lane, moves across.
11:19Did Verstappen have enough space in the initial part of that chicane?
11:23And then did he try and get a bit cheeky in the second part?
11:27Max hasn't done anything wrong there.
11:29It's fair enough to go around the outside.
11:31Look at this.
11:33Look, look, and there we go across the top of Lewis.
11:36The rollover hoop does its job there for...
11:39And the halo too.
11:40And the halo.
11:42And then the tyre.
11:45Yeah, I think Lewis got, obviously Lewis's rear wing.
11:48No wonder Bono told him to switch it off.
11:49The rear wing's broken anyway.
11:51And that was a scary, scary moment there.
11:55Even with the halo, Martin.
11:56Look at the rear right tyre of Max Verstappen's red bull.
12:00Rubbing against the crash helmet of Lewis Hamilton by the looks of it.
12:04And Hamilton certainly trying to get as low in his cockpit as he possibly could.
12:09Wow.
12:11That was a very, very near miss there for Lewis Hamilton.
12:16He's got to go on.
12:17Maximum attack.
12:19And it's safety car coming in at the end of this lap.
12:23Daniel Ricciardo's won seven Grand Prix.
12:25He knows what to do.
12:26He knows how to win this race.
12:28And he has survived leading Grand Prix's with a safety car restart.
12:31Now he's gone.
12:32Charles Leclerc's gone with him.
12:34Lando Norris has certainly gone with Charles Leclerc.
12:36They're watching on at Ferrari as round the Parabolica we come.
12:40And going very wide again, Lando Norris.
12:43But that gets them a straight line and an earlier straight line down the straight.
12:47As they all try and break the toe.
12:48And weaving about a bit is Daniel Ricciardo.
12:50Valtteri Bottas is making a move on Carlos Sainz.
12:53Lando Norris is making a move on Charles Leclerc.
12:55Ricciardo leads into turn one.
12:57Leclerc and Norris, they make contact.
12:59But Charles Leclerc keeps that second place.
13:02Behind them comes Sergio Perez.
13:04Then Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas.
13:06Sixth place for Bottas.
13:07Then Stroll.
13:08Alonso, Russell and Latifi.
13:10And now, watching through the Curva Grande.
13:12Brilliant move from Lando Norris.
13:15Who's ahead of Charles Leclerc.
13:17It's McLaren 1-2 and Monza after the safety car.
13:21Norris is completely fearless.
13:23He was on the grass at one point in the Curva Grande there.
13:26Absolute attack there.
13:28McLaren 1-2 as you say.
13:30McLaren versus Ferrari.
13:31Sounds familiar from a long time ago, doesn't it?
13:34Yeah, we were talking about the championship battle.
13:36But don't forget the battle for third in the championship as well.
13:38It's as keenly contested, trust me.
13:41And McLaren winning out on this occasion as Lando Norris gets past Charles Leclerc.
13:46Here comes Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz.
13:49And they were just criss-crossing each other.
13:51Has Bottas gone ahead of Carlos Sainz into the Renofilo chicane?
13:55Yes, he has.
13:56Valtteri Bottas from 19th on the grid is now up to 5th.
13:59And that's Sebastian Vettel in the walls once again.
14:01Antonio Giovinazzi just behind him.
14:04Robert Cibica ahead of him.
14:06And he's sandwiched now between the two Alphas as Sergio Perez trying to move on.
14:11Charles Leclerc is into the De La Roja chicane we go.
14:13Perez goes over the rumble strips and bounces back onto the track ahead of the Ferrari
14:18who's coming at him into the two Lesmos.
14:20He needs to give that place back to the Ferrari.
14:22He took the place off the track as he did yesterday.
14:25This is the Perez incident.
14:27Is that rejoining the track safely?
14:29He didn't leave me any room.
14:33Valtteri Bottas got one Ferrari on the previous lap.
14:36He's gonna go and try and get a second Ferrari on this particular lap.
14:39Leclerc brakes a lot later and maintains his advantage, stays ahead of Bottas.
14:45But immediately, unlike Perez yesterday, gives the place to Valtteri Bottas.
14:49You can't leave the track and gain the lasting advantage.
14:52So he immediately gave that place back, but he's fighting it now with Valtteri Bottas
14:56just ahead into the De La Roja chicane.
14:58Breaks later and holds on to that fourth place.
15:01There are scraps going on here, there and everywhere here at Monza.
15:04I thought Leclerc had lost that one.
15:06That was a good effort to recover that position.
15:10Oh, it's better love. You go off and then you're gonna talk from that.
15:13Yeah, so what Bottas is saying, look, he went off and then got a slipstream from me.
15:18And he gained a lasting advantage is the key phrase.
15:23And here comes Valtteri Bottas for another battle with a Ferrari.
15:27Charles Leclerc is behind him as they go in to the first chicane.
15:31Bottas is in a rocket ship down the straights. That's gonna come in handy a little bit later on.
15:35Can Valtteri Bottas produce that real racer's race?
15:38Kechenko, we've had a five-second penalty for that overtake on Leclerc.
15:42Aldo is out. We're gonna get that five-second gap.
15:45And Norris. Norris has a penalty as well.
15:48Negative. Nothing for Norris yet.
15:51Peres with a question mark in his tone there.
15:54Valtteri Bottas, seven podiums in 2021.
15:57His last win, Russia 2020, where we go to the next race.
16:02It's almost a calendar year since Valtteri Bottas last stood on the top step of the podium.
16:06But he is definitely in the fastest car at the moment because of those medium compound tyres.
16:13Bottas is trying to get through here. Past the Curva Grande we go.
16:16He's ahead. Going into the De La Rogge chicane.
16:19Can he make it stick?
16:20Perez is gonna fight him back on the exit.
16:22He went deep, Valtteri Bottas. Thought he had the move.
16:25Perez let him go. Knew he got a bit too deep.
16:28And then took that third place back again.
16:30Pivotal for this race. And he'll be cursing himself.
16:32Because he had the move well done there, didn't he?
16:35And over. He sort of...
16:36He overtook him twice effectively.
16:38And got in too deep on the brakes.
16:41Let's have a look at it again.
16:44As a gap opens on the inside of the Curva Grande.
16:47Which seems to be a very nice place for overtaking.
16:49On this sunny Sunday afternoon.
16:52And at that point Valtteri's like,
16:53Yep, done this, done this, done this.
16:54Oh no. More brakes.
16:56Gave it a little tweak of brake bias, didn't he?
16:59He went to 60 on the...
17:01On his wheel there.
17:03Not much.

17:13We're watching two McLarens out in front.
17:16Their last 1-2, Canada, 2010.
17:19Their last race victory, Brazil, 2012.
17:23And they are tantalizingly within touching distance of adding to that tally of 182 race wins.
17:30Daniel Ricciardo leads Lando Norris.
17:34Ricciardo leading for the first time since Abu Dhabi in 2018.
17:39On course for his first victory since Monaco in 2018.
17:44He left Red Bull.
17:46He went to Renault.
17:47He's gone to McLaren.
17:48He's gonna get the victory now.
17:50It's McLaren and Ricciardo that win the Italian Grand Prix.
17:55Lando Norris comes home to make it a 1-2 for the men from Woking.
17:59Sergio Perez comes home to take third on the road.
18:04But he drops down to fifth because of that five-second time penalty.
18:08Bottas on the podium for an eighth time this season ahead of Leclerc.
18:13Sainz, Stroll, Alonso Russell and Ocon complete the top ten.

19:31Valtteri Bottas then on the podium for the eighth time this season.
