00:01Kia ora, my name is Toby Buchanan and you're listening to episode 7 of my true crime podcast
00:09Small Town Scandal. As of last episode, suspect numero uno and the murder of Uncle Mitch is his
00:19brother and my dad, Bruce Buchanan. He was at Uncle Mitch's the day he died. Hang on, what are you
00:29doing here? He said he went to see Uncle Mitch for help because he was there when his friend
00:33accidentally fell onto some rocks while they were boozing and having a boogie over an oz.
00:37And now dad's the prime suspect, especially considering his fingerprints are all over
00:41the mowers. My old school rival, Matt McKenzie, is now the town hero having nabbed to Hoyos
00:47Most Wanted. So now dad is in a holding cell at the local police station. Under suspicion
00:52of murder. And I know some people will be thinking I'm naive, not thinking that my dad
00:59is absolutely guilty.
01:11It was also about this time that I started to question if podcasting the whole thing was
01:16a good idea. But fortunately, unfortunately, the podcast was starting to take on a life
01:21of its own.
01:21Toby, what's this I hear about your dad getting arrested in relation to your uncle's death?
01:27How did you hear about that?
01:29A good journalist always has her ear to the ground. And how bloody fantastic is this?
01:33It's you, the podcaster, discovering his dad was the murderer.
01:39Everyone's got to talk about it.
01:40No, they don't know if it was him. I didn't think you liked the episode I sent you.
01:44Oh, we can totally edit around that. We'll have to move fast. That ridiculous can the real
01:50Mrs. Moth Police Stand Up podcast is hogging all the oxygen. But I think we can outdo it.
01:56Anyway, mate, you do your thing. Make it all tear-jerking. Get your dad crying on tape.
02:02Who doesn't love a good family drama?
02:05Hey, mate.
02:07I'm proud of you.
02:09And all that crap you got me into with the pet food article?
02:14Consider it water under the bridge.
02:17Well, when you win me a podcast award, we can consider it water under the bridge.
02:21How does that all sound, Tapes?
02:24Are you there, Tapes? Tapes? Oi, Tapes.
02:28Yeah, good.
02:29Great. Lock it in, Eddie.
02:40Excuse me, Meredith.
02:43Has my dad's court-appointed lawyer arrived?
02:45Not yet.
02:46Oh.
02:48Can I go and see him in the holding cell while I wait?
02:51Also, not yet.
02:54Feel free to take a seat while you wait.
02:58Oh, my God.
03:00Okay.
03:12Hi.
03:13I'm, uh, David Patterson.
03:15Left a message on your hotline.
03:17I'm, uh, doing a podcast following the case of Mrs. Moth.
03:21You!
03:22Wait!
03:24Oh, yes.
03:27I'll let Matt know you're here.
03:29Okay, great.
03:30Yeah.
03:43I'm so sorry.
03:44I just want to say, you probably get this all the time, but I'm such a huge fan of your
03:48podcast.
03:49Good, mate.
03:55Actually, I find it really inspirational, because I'm doing my own podcast, and just hearing
03:58you go through it all, it really inspires me.
04:01Great.
04:03Happy to help.
04:04Love my fans.
04:08Actually, how does it feel now that she's been caught?
04:10It's a bit of an anti-climax, if I'm honest.
04:13Just really hoping to be the one to crack the case, you know?
04:15Like I usually do.
04:18Kick it myself for not working it out earlier.
04:21Clues are hidden in plain sight.
04:24Anyway.
04:30Meredith, hi.
04:31I am here to see, um...
04:35Brewstery Cannon?
04:36Yeah.
04:37Yeah, yep.
04:37That's the one.
04:38You him?
04:39I'm his son.
04:40Oh, hello.
04:41Hi, Misty Burrows.
04:43Sorry, I'm late.
04:44Spilt birch and musy all over myself this morning.
04:46It sent me right back.
04:47Oh, no.
04:48All right.
04:49Shall we?
04:50Yeah.
04:50Cool.
04:51Okay.
04:52I'll go first.
04:53Okay.
04:54Okay.
04:55First things first.
05:01Uh, so, obviously, I don't want to know if you did it, but...
05:09Did you?
05:10Did you do it?
05:12Did you kill your brother?
05:14Well...
05:14Actually, no.
05:15Don't tell me.
05:16I do not want to know.
05:18But he didn't, right?
05:19He didn't kill him?
05:21Yeah.
05:21No.
05:22I didn't kill him.
05:23Okay.
05:24Sure.
05:28Hey, it doesn't matter what I think.
05:30I'm just a court-appointed lawyer.
05:33All right.
05:34Well, maybe we should have a look at your statement then, eh?
05:36Okay.
05:37Uh...
05:39Here you are.
05:41Okay.
05:42So, you said you saw a trailer driving away, and that was after he was killed, right?
05:47Yeah.
05:48I couldn't see a lot because I was inside the house and what happened?
05:52It was a horse trailer.
05:55A horse trailer?
05:56You didn't say it was a horse trailer, Dad.
05:58And you didn't think to call the police, Bruce?
05:59Well, I freaked out.
06:01I tend to do that.
06:02I mean...
06:03You can understand how that looks pretty, sasso.
06:06Because normal people would call the police when they find a dead body.
06:11Especially if it's their brother.
06:13Oh, of course not.
06:14I just thought with the dead guy in Cairns.
06:15Hey, that...
06:16What?
06:17What?
06:18Sorry?
06:18What dead guy in Cairns?
06:20We shouldn't talk about that, Dad.
06:21No, hang on.
06:22Did you kill a guy in Cairns?
06:24Oh, no.
06:26Oh, no.
06:27Okay.
06:27No, do not tell me.
06:28I do not want to know.
06:31Do the cops know about this dead guy in Cairns?
06:33No, they don't.
06:34And they don't need to, right, Dad?
06:36It was a misunderstanding.
06:37Yeah.
06:38Complete misunderstanding.
06:40Oh, no, let's go on.
06:43Come on.
06:45We missed you.
06:46Yeah.
06:47What do you reckon?
06:48Well, you know, I'm not going to lie.
06:50I have got my work cut out for me with the two of you, eh?
06:53I mean, everything is just stacked against him.
06:57Anyway, is there anything we can do?
06:59Like, is there anything I can do?
07:01Well, short of a miracle.
07:02Shit, I don't know.
07:03I guess if you could, like, find someone to maybe pin it on,
07:06that's a little bit more suspicious, that'd work.
07:08Look, I've retried that.
07:11If only the police were such dickheads
07:12and they kept the case open
07:13or at least kind of exhausted every possibility, you know?
07:16Yeah.
07:17Yeah, it sucks, eh?
07:20It's all right.
07:21You got this.
07:22Hmm.
07:25Anyway, I've really got to go.
07:27Party club awards to attend to.
07:29But don't you worry.
07:31I am going to call you as soon as I can, eh?
07:34If I get the time.
07:35Right?
07:35Otherwise, see you at the trial.
07:37Well, you got this.
07:38You got this, all right?
07:38Okay.
07:39Kia kaha.
07:39Okay.
07:40Bye.
07:40Sure.
07:48Feeling completely demoralised,
07:50I thought I'd check in on Dad
07:51and his poorly surveilled holding cell.
07:53Misery likes company, after all.
07:56Dad.
07:58Here he is.
08:00How do you think it went with the loyal lady?
08:02Did she say anything after?
08:04No, not really.
08:06I didn't kill Mitchie.
08:08I can promise you that, son.
08:11No, Dad, I don't think you did.
08:12Don't worry.
08:14It's because you're a suspicious-looking old fart.
08:17They'll lock you away for good just because of the way you look.
08:20Hello, Mrs. Padigrew.
08:22You've got a nerve showing your face around here, Buchanan.
08:26I'm sorry I facilitated your arrest, but you did kill 23 people.
08:2939.
08:30But they don't need to know about the rest.
08:33You're just lucky I'm not out and free because you would make a mighty fine 40th trophy.
08:39If you don't mind me asking, how did you get away with it for so long?
08:4439.
08:45It's quite a remarkable number.
08:46It is.
08:47Well, I'd infiltrate my victims with my sweet smile, and then I'd kill them with kindness,
08:53and then I'd actually kill them with bullets.
08:57Cure them with kindness?
09:00That's what I said, you moron.
09:03I'll be bad, Dad.
09:05It's funny like that, just like the brain, because I saw the moth insignia on the spoon
09:09and it just, poof, everything fell into place.
09:12That's so cool.
09:13I can see that you're really proud of yourself.
09:15Tubbs, what are you doing back here?
09:17I'm in the middle of an important interview.
09:19We've actually probably got enough.
09:20Well, hold on.
09:21We haven't got into the rest of my career yet.
09:23I've got your number.
09:24I'll give you a call if I've got any other questions.
09:27Thanks so much for your time.
09:30It's a shame, mate.
09:36Yeah, off you run.
09:38Good to see you.
09:40Good on, Tubbs.
09:41Sorry.
09:41Hey, I was wondering if maybe I could talk to you about Uncle Mitch's case.
09:45No, actually, we can't, because I don't have time, because I've got an interview with the
09:48evening news about catching not one, but two murderers in one fell swoop.
09:53Wow.
09:54Congratulations about that, by the way.
09:56I don't think I've said that.
09:57I've been reading about you online.
09:59Everyone's like, whoa, you're the man who caught Mrs Moff, and that's huge.
10:02Well done.
10:04What, um, what websites are those?
10:07What websites were they?
10:08I can't exactly remember, but there were about six, and then they were just like, they were
10:12saying you were real clever clogs.
10:14Anyway, and just on my dad, um, congratulations on that too, by the way.
10:19That's amazing.
10:20Yeah.
10:20And I know that you think he's guilty, and that he is guilty, and, um, but just to be
10:25sure, just for my peace of mind, I was wondering if there was any chance that maybe, um, just to
10:31be sure, well, you could put him through a lie detector test.
10:42Mate, those things don't work.
10:45Yeah.
10:46Well, maybe we could ask him about the horse trailer that he saw at the mansion.
10:50I was wondering if...
10:51Oh, no.
10:52He's obviously lying about that.
10:53With forensics, with his fingerprints on the lawnmowers...
10:56Dubs.
10:57What's...
10:57What's going on here?
10:59I don't know how much clearer I can be.
11:01The case is C to the...
11:04Losed.
11:06It's closed, mate.
11:07The case is closed.
11:08The case is closed.
11:13You enjoy this, don't you?
11:16Enjoy what?
11:18That it's my dad that's been arrested.
11:21No, no, no.
11:21God, no.
11:22No.
11:24But...
11:25Maybe you've got a problem with being outsmarted.
11:29See, you always thought I was a bit of a dum-dum, didn't you?
11:33And here I am.
11:34I'm...
11:34I'm solving the crimes.
11:36I'm catching the crims.
11:40And I'm getting the girl.
11:49Anyway, I've got to get ready for this news interview that's coming up, so...
11:52Thanks for popping in, Tubs.
11:54Thank you, Matt.
11:56I don't know why I had to deal with the brunt of Matt McKenzie's hang-ups around having
12:00a genius scientist for a dad and having seven hyper-aggressive older sisters, but there
12:05you go.
12:07All I knew was the whole thing felt bloody hopeless.
12:12But then suddenly, out of nowhere, I suddenly remembered a hero of mine's wry observation.
12:19Closer.
12:20Hidden in plain sight.
12:21Hidden in plain sight?
12:23What am I missing?
12:26What's this?
12:28On the side of the window.
12:33It was a horse trailer.
12:38Horse.
12:40Trailer.
12:43Horse trailer.
12:48No horse trailers on that day, either.
12:50Yeah, but wait.
12:52There, there's one.
12:53True, but that's driving onto the road at 7.30pm, two nights before your Uncle Mitch died.
12:58So unless they drove onto the road and camped down for two days, I don't think that's the
13:01murderer.
13:03It's like looking for a bloody needle in a haystack.
13:06Be here all night.
13:08Should I cook up some sausages?
13:10So the trailer was driven onto a dead end road at 7.30pm, at night, two days before
13:16he died.
13:17And the next time we see him on CCTV footage, is two days after he dies.
13:21Okay, so they were on the road for four days.
13:24Yeah, that is weird.
13:26Wait, so that means they live on this road?
13:29Yes.
13:30I mean, Dad said that he saw a trailer driving off shortly after Mitch died, right?
13:34But we don't see it on the CCTV.
13:35So that means that they, I mean, it's the only thing that makes sense is that they live
13:38on this road.
13:39Wait, what's your Dad got to do with it?
13:41It doesn't matter.
13:43What matters is finding this horse trailer on this dead end road.
13:47You do realise that this road is 10 kilometres long, right?
13:53And a lot of the farmers own horses and probably have trailers.
14:02Right, we're here.
14:04Yeah.
14:05This one, they grow broccolini, so don't worry about them.
14:08Um, this one, they used to farm llamas, I think it was, and they got all rustled.
14:12Who lives on the dead end?
14:13Who lives at the very end?
14:14I can't remember.
14:16I think I might start there.
14:17You're having some sort of six-sense experience right now?
14:19Maybe.
14:20But I think I'll start at the end and make my way back.
14:23Makes sense.
14:23Well, make sure you stop by on your way past for some sausages.
14:27I'd love that.
14:28You too.
14:30I drove to the end of Tamihana Road.
14:33Vague memories were pinging the whole time.
14:35I knew the stretch of road well.
14:57McKeith's pet foods?
14:59I remembered this place from my childhood.
15:02And was this the horse trailer that Dad saw leaving Uncle Mitch's death scene?
15:07It certainly looked like the one from the CCTV footage.
15:11But at that moment, all concerns for personal safety were clouded behind vague memories of
15:16childhood awkwardness.
15:19Inside, I found my old school friends.
15:26Dwayne and Wayne McKeith.
15:38Oh, hi, Toby.
15:39I am so sorry about that.
15:41I let myself in.
15:42I did knock on the door, but I don't know if you heard me above your self-flagellating.
15:45You guys are really busy.
15:46I should...
15:47No.
15:47No, I actually do need to talk to you guys.
15:51Yeah, we're almost done.
15:51You're almost done?
15:52Yeah, grab a seat.
15:53Fire away.
15:53Fire away, mate.
15:57That's mum.
16:00We're lost in the wilderness without her.
16:03Oh, I'm so sorry, guys, about that.
16:06Because I was suddenly remembering when I was pulling up, I used to come here and play as
16:10a kid sometimes, right?
16:11We used to catch frogs and eat them.
16:14That's right.
16:15That was fun.
16:17But listen, guys, I won't take out much more of your time.
16:19I was just going to ask you a couple of questions, if that's okay.
16:24We've been expecting this.
16:25We didn't kill him, no?
16:28You didn't kill who?
16:28We didn't kill him.
16:29Keep it cool, Wayne-o.
16:32Okay, look.
16:35I won't tell anyone anything, right?
16:38But if you guys didn't kill Uncle Mitch, I need to know who did.
16:42Because at the moment, they think it's my dad, and he can't go back into prison.
16:48But if it is my dad, I do need to know is that.
16:50I need to know that as well.
16:51So was it my dad that killed Uncle Mitch?
16:55It's still out there.
17:00What is?
17:01The demon that killed him.
17:05Sorry, what?
17:06It was a demon.
17:08Sorry, a demon killed Uncle Mitch?
17:13Well, what did this demon look like?
17:16It had glowing eyes.
17:20Right.
17:22But it was a person, right?
17:23It was a demon.
17:25Straight from my heel.
17:27Okay.
17:27Well, whether it was a demon or a person...
17:30It was a demon called Azatel.
17:32The thing is, though, it wasn't my dad, right?
17:34So what we need to do is we need to go to the police station right now
17:37and we need to tell them that my dad is innocent.
17:39No.
17:41They'll arrest us for the marijuana we've been growing.
17:45I can't go back to prison.
17:46I am not built for it.
17:47Sorry, Toby.
17:48Why not?
17:49Prison sucks.
17:50I can't go back there.
17:52No.
17:52Dwayne.
17:54Dwayne, we've got to go to the police.
17:55Azatel walks amongst us.
17:57Police is my dad.
17:58Dwayne.
17:59Be careful.
18:00Don't tell them about Azatel.
18:00He might come for you next.
18:04Well, whether it was a demon or a person,
18:07it was a demon straight from my heel.
18:10And the demon's name is apparently Azatel
18:13and he's often depicted with glowing eyes.
18:15So I reckon we get the guys in and we just question them and...
18:20So McKeith boys are absolute loons.
18:23And they've smoked way too much ganja over the years.
18:26I'm not getting involved with that.
18:27Look, I know you think it's stupid,
18:29but maybe we should just chat.
18:30Do you honestly believe they saw a demon?
18:34Well, I believe it is a possibility
18:37and I believe that maybe this proves that it's not my dad.
18:40Maybe we should get this Azizel character in
18:42and just ask him a few questions.
18:43Yeah, and maybe you should talk to your lawyer
18:46and they can bring it up in court.
18:47And that'll get your dad off for murder.
18:49Oh, Azizel.
18:58Azizel.
19:01I believe you.
19:05But it ain't no demon you're looking for.
19:09Oh.
19:14Oh.
19:19Where are you taking me?
19:20No one comes in here because the office has gone paperless
19:23so a stationary room is pointless.
19:27Aliens regularly visit to hoi hou.
19:30Everyone knows of that.
19:31But getting the evidence that is the hard part, my friend.
19:35Behold a creature not of this world.
19:38Was that a fantail?
19:39That night?
19:40Come off it.
19:42Okay.
19:44How about this one?
19:47Right, that's just the Starlink satellite.
19:49Everyone gets confused by that one, so...
19:51It's not the Starlink satellite.
19:54Smartass.
19:55Okay, sure.
19:56Listen, I can't actually stay for very long.
19:57I'd better go.
19:58Hold on.
19:59Call your jecks.
20:00How about this one?
20:07Where did that one come from?
20:09It's a grey.
20:10From the Zeta reticulized star system.
20:14No, no, no.
20:14The footage.
20:15What was this recorded on?
20:17No.
20:18Buchananizer automated lawnmower.
20:21The Buchananizers have cameras?
20:23Yes, sir.
20:26The Buchananizers?
20:30The Buchananizers might have filmed
20:32who killed Uncle Mitch.
20:34The Buchanan turbo the only herself.
20:35All the他說 preparation for the others.
20:37Tom the one.
20:38And the other people that I don't know
20:38The Jimmy's looking for people.
20:38Look at her.
20:38The big ì—´ him 11 years trip.
20:38You see the ключ?
20:39So many times them.
