Russian Central Bank sues EU for immobilising €210 billion in assets

The Russian Central Bank has challenged the indefinite immobilisation of its sovereign assets, which the European Union has agreed to release only when the war in Ukraine ends and reparations are paid.

00:00The Russian central bank has filed a lawsuit against the European Union for the indefinite immobilization of its sovereign assets,
00:08which the bloc approved in a bid to strengthen its leverage in ongoing talks to end the war in Ukraine.
00:14The legal action was submitted to the EU's general court in Luxembourg last Friday,
00:19but it was announced on Tuesday morning in a short press release.
00:23The European Commission dismissed the lawsuit.
00:26This claim comes in a context of a growing number of Russian legal challenges concerning our support measures for Ukraine.
00:35Therefore, we are, of course, not surprised.
00:38As regards our position, we are fully confident about the legality of this regulation and its compatibility with EU law
00:46and international law.
00:47The assets are worth about 210 billion euros across the bloc.
00:52The majority, 185 billion euros, is held at Euroclear, a Brussels-based depository already sued by Moscow.
01:01The regulation that is being challenged was agreed by member states in December amid intense negotiations
01:06to provide Ukraine with 90 billion euros in fresh assistance.
