Woonona High School has been named as one of 20 school that has been selected to trial a gifted extension class from 2027.
Woonona High School already runs several successful HPGE programs, including a unique transition to High School program for gifted and high potential students. Principal Caroline David and Year 7 students speak about the programs. Video shot on March 4, 2026 by Anna Warr

00:01Hi, I'm Carol and David. I'm the principal at Wanoonah High School.
00:04We run a Year 6 HPGE program that feeds into the Year 7 Extension class.
00:10The purpose of this is to provide that HPGE education for gifted students
00:15so that they can have the benefit of staying in their local area with their local peers
00:19whilst getting the HPGE education and the challenge that is going to meet their educational needs.
00:26Internationally, Australia is an outlier.
00:28Internationally, the highest performing systems have most children going to their local schools
00:33and still having a very high level of education.
00:36Wanoonah High School is very proud of our academic results
00:39but this program has helped local students stay in their local school
00:44and still achieve very, very high marks and meet their academic goals.
01:02My name is Kiri Kathard. I'm in 7E at Wanoonah High School.
01:05Although I wasn't in a local school close here, I was part of the HPGE program
01:11which allowed me to get to know a bunch of people, become friends with them
01:14and become more comfortable in learning in this type of environment.
01:19My name is Elise Tenuguzo and I'm in the Year 7 Enrichment class at Wanoonah High School.
01:25I was also in the HPGE program last year and it helped me with the transition into high school
01:33because I got to meet the teachers and I also got to be comfortable with my surroundings
01:41and the school community and this program this year helps me stay with my friends
01:49but also be in a gifted program.
01:52Hello, I'm Ashton Moore. I'm in 7E at Wanoonah High School.
01:57I also attended the HPGE class which has helped me get comfortable with the school,
02:05meet some of my future teachers and meet my future peers and getting to know them well.
02:11Hi, my name is Evie Whiteman. Although I didn't attend the HPGE program last year,
02:18this year the Enrichment program has helped me make new friends
02:22and has given me more opportunities than I could even imagine.
