00:11Applegate was just 17 and starring as Kelly Bundy on Married with Children. She was invited
00:16to present at the MTV Video Music Awards and brought along Pitt, then 26, who was part of
00:21her LA friend group, a circle that even included Johnny Depp, whom she admits she'd been in love
00:25with for years. But that night, she only had eyes for Sebastian Bach, the long-haired frontman
00:31of Skid Row, known for their hit 18 in Life. Applegate writes that Pitt wasn't yet the Brad
00:37Pitt, not the global heartthrob we know today, so she made a split-second teenage decision and
00:42left him behind at the afterparty. It gets worse. Pitt ended up driving her mom home, nearly got
00:47into a fight at a gas station, and reportedly didn't speak to Applegate for years. She later
00:52learned he told two future girlfriends he was still mad about it. Her verdict now?
00:56She was a kid. He deserved better. And yes, she jokes, Brad is now THE Brad Pitt, while
01:02Bach, quote, still has long hair, I guess. But the memoir goes much deeper than one wild
01:07awards night. Applegate admits she almost didn't take the role of Kelly Bundy because she hated
01:11the character. Originally written as a tough biker chick, Kelly transformed after Applegate
01:16watched The Decline of Western Civilization Part 2, The Metal Years. Inspired by the over-the-top
01:21glam metal scene, sky-high hair, skin-tight lycra, Kelly was reborn, as Applegate puts
01:27it, into a full rock slut. And yet, she insists, Kelly was always played as a virgin, a wink
01:33the audience was in on. While millions saw her as a beauty icon, behind the scenes Applegate
01:38was battling brutal body image issues. She worked out obsessively, starved herself to fit into
01:43those dresses. Her own mother once suggested liposuction when she was still a teen. She writes
01:48that even catching the eye of a famous rock star, and ditching Brad Pitt, couldn't convince
01:52her she was attractive.
01:53My sickness for perfection, she says, was always the driving force in my life. The book also
01:58details rocky romances, including a brief teenage date with Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili
02:03Peppers, and a later abusive relationship that left deep scars.
02:06She also reveals that her first marriage to Jonathan Shaq was doomed from the start. Confessing
02:12that as she walked down the aisle in 2001, she thought, oh f***, I knew right then that
02:16this man was not it for me. She opens up about an abortion, surviving breast cancer, and undergoing
02:22a double mastectomy in 2008. In 2021, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a condition
02:28that has since left her bedridden at times. Today, Applegate is married to musician Martin
02:32Lenoble, and they share a daughter, Sadie. And as she reflects on five decades in Hollywood,
02:37she says this memoir isn't about shock value or revenge, it's about finally telling the
02:42truth. She writes that she wants to speak to the little girl, who thought she had to
02:46be perfect.
