00:00we are ready to go right now we bring to you two-time double gold olympic champion the man
00:09who took over the internet and the speed skating rink it is jordan stoltz good afternoon sir
00:15yeah how's it going man we're doing really well all right i've got questions about olympic medals
00:22but first thing i really need to know how many of those chocolate medals did hershey's give you
00:28and did you eat some of them well i ate as many as i could but when i was filming
00:33it i probably had
00:34to go through about six of them they kept having to give me new ones i don't know they didn't
00:37i kept
00:37biting it in a weird way i think i cost them more you know olympic hershey's medals than uh than
00:44i
00:44could eat myself so they just uh had to dispose of them all right is that is that hinder training
00:50or help training how's that work for you i suppose it gets to a point where it could hinder your
00:55training if you eat too many but uh i'm just trying to get the carbs in i mean speed skating
00:59you want to have as many carbs as possible super explosive right and uh yeah hershey's is a super
01:05you know a lot of carbs i don't want to say it's a lot of carbs but it tastes good
01:08so that's all that
01:09matters you won two golds and a silver it seemed like you did uh pretty pretty darn okay for yourself
01:17best speed skating performance for america since the legendary eric heiden and eric heiden was talking
01:24about you and he said i'm just proud to be mentioned in the same sentence as jordan stoltz
01:30that kid is a stud what does it mean to you to hear a legend of american speed skating say
01:37that kid's a stud i'm honored to be in his class i feel honored to be in his class i
01:43mean to have mine
01:44he mentioned with his i mean he's done a feat that's never been done before and i hope i mean
01:48it
01:49might not ever be done again so for my name to be tied to eric hiding uh it's huge if
01:54you look back
01:54to 1980 what he accomplished was something uh super i guess you could say magical so it's super cool to
02:01be tied is that something in is that something that's ever in the back of your mind at all you're
02:06like hey maybe i can uh go for those those five medals i would love to try i think it'd
02:11be insanely
02:12difficult um i did my best to prepare for trying to win you know three or four you know gold
02:18medals
02:18i came out with two and a silver so to try and do five uh that possibility is slightly there
02:23but i think
02:23it's super difficult i mean the physical side of it is uh crazy i mean i already trained so much
02:28five
02:29hours you know bike rides and doing so many squats and everything i mean to do that like even more
02:36for the next four years it's just it would be super mentally tough and be near impossible i don't
02:42know we'll have to find out oh i love the find out part though that's the that's the part that
02:47keeps me
02:47hanging on just a little bit more there i didn't get to watch that special right before you skated on
02:52on your family and and that that rink down at the bottom of the hill that you that can you
02:58kind of
02:58explain walk getting out there on quiet ice whenever you're kind of just in your own mind by yourself
03:05that feeling and and what you're thinking while you're while you're training like that
03:10well skating in general is a feeling i mean it's so like feel incorporated to be able to skate fast
03:16i mean you have to feel good on the ice and uh the blades are such a big part of
03:19that you have to
03:20have the perfect radius and some people are very particular about how their blade setup is and me
03:25in general i'm very picky about that so uh when i'm on the ice like you're listening to the ice
03:30you're
03:31feeling it you're trying to you know it's kind of like an art right it's hard to do that on
03:35a lake but when you first start start out like how i did on a pond it's uh i mean
03:40i was so young
03:40it wasn't something that i was like oh i know i already know what to do to be able to
03:44skate fast
03:44it was just more so uh just fun being out there on the on the pond and trying to be
03:49like apollo ono
03:50like how i thought i was because he was the first guy i ever saw on short track in 2010
03:54although he kind of inspired me to start skating and uh yeah it's just it's super it was super fun
03:59skating on the pond when i was young and then it progressed into something way more and here i am
04:03now
04:05do you do you know when you uh put your your skate on to a rink or do you know
04:10beforehand if the ice
04:11is going to be quote unquote fast because as stars fans down here we've uh dealt with some messy and
04:17sloppy ice at times so like can you kind of explain how like what that feels like when you get
04:21to fast
04:22ice well usually uh the faster ice is a bit colder so your blade is not sinking into it as
04:28much so
04:29you're gliding on more of the surface and uh that can be around 12 13 degrees for the ice temps
04:33you can kind of see it if it's frosty that layer of frost is going to be between you know
04:38the blade
04:38and the contact part so that's going to slow you down you want it to be you know as smooth
04:42as possible
04:43uh for that little water you know stream under the blade to be created uh usually before i get on
04:49the ice i have a temperature gauge that i check it's uh infrared and i can read the temperature of
04:53the ice so i kind of know what to expect how the tempo is going to be different ice uh
04:57you can
04:58like change your skating with different tempo so i'm usually checking that whether it's 25 degrees
05:03uh 18 degrees or 12 degrees i prefer 18 degrees and uh i can feel the difference between like 18
05:09to 20
05:10or 18 to 16 so 18 is uh where i like it how how much do you have to adjust
05:16like knowing your
05:17opponent's strengths and weaknesses as well then when you know hey this is going to be a little bit of
05:22faster ice this is going to be a little slower ice do you how much do you have to adjust
05:26knowing
05:26you know if it plays into the strengths or weaknesses of your opponents
05:32luckily i'm kind of fast enough to not have to worry about that but uh
05:39some guys it makes a big difference for uh usually it's the really heavy guys or the really light guys
05:45and i'm sort of in between so i'm kind of well off now we we are at spring training in
05:51uh in
05:51arizona right now we're currently right in front of us we have a baseball field where it looks like
05:56team cuba is going to play the kansas city royals in a friendly game what version of ice baseball have
06:01you ever played or decided the one day i will play or get this game uh popular ice baseball i
06:09mean
06:09that would be interesting i don't know if you can do it on speed skates you can do it on
06:12hockey
06:12skates i'm pretty sure i played dodgeball on the ice before when i was younger but
06:16never yeah might have to try it out that sounds that sounds super fun all right well as long as
06:25we're convincing you to try things out i have a controversial theory i threw out to hillary
06:30knight before the olympics she did not completely shut it down no she didn't as you collect more and
06:36more olympic medals would you ever consider trading olympic medals to get the entire set like would you
06:43ever trade a silver to get two or three bronze medals and just really be able to complete out
06:48the set depending on how many medals you have uh nope i would not trade a silver or gold i
06:56wouldn't
06:56you know it is what it is you won the medals and uh if you didn't get a bronze i
07:02mean i guess that's
07:02too bad i mean i would rather just have gold and silver i think that's just the ocd nature of
07:10my
07:10personality as i would hope to complete the entire set but i could see how gold and silver
07:15are obviously much better the last question i had for you is you're already a huge deal
07:21in like places like the netherlands and whatnot where they just love speed skating have you noticed
07:26a difference since you've gotten back to america winning three gold medals setting an olympic record
07:32and getting two goals have you noticed a difference in your notoriety here i haven't gotten back to the
07:38u.s i'm actually still in the netherlands right now preparing for another competition
07:42but i do come back i'm hoping to see a little difference and i think i will
07:46in the netherlands right now i'm super popular i walk into the grocery store
07:50and like even the checkout girls know who i am i just went there last night to buy some things
07:54at
07:54like 10 o'clock at night and uh everybody was asking them to take pictures which was kind of random
07:58so i don't know if i want it to be that level in the u.s where i can't have
08:02any privacy
08:04so i think it'd be cool now and my last question for you is when was the moment after the
08:14race
08:14the when you won your golds that it hit you like emotionally you kind of became a little overwhelmed
08:20and you were like yeah okay i get it right now and because a lot of people say when they're
08:24on the
08:25podium you know it really kind of absorbs everything was there a moment for you where it
08:29really did hit emotionally uh probably after a thousand just because then you can say i mean
08:34that was my first race and i won gold and then you can say you know you're an olympic gold
08:38medalist
08:39right it's something that can't be taken away and uh just emotionally being able to finally reach
08:44the pinnacle and the highest achievement in your sport that emotionally is uh you know pretty strong
08:48and i think i felt it right away after the first thousand years and uh things kind of calmed down
08:55because of 500 right of course it had to you had to be able to sleep at night so i
08:59had not thinking
09:01about it but uh i think it was right away i felt that that's awesome and especially having your family
09:07and friends this go around as opposed to i know the elastic olympics the uh it was a little crowded
09:13right there so thank you very much for the time congratulations on all of your success and we look
09:19forward to having you back in america thank you
09:22thank you
09:22you
