00:00the show is this combination of like me now and then this like nostalgia play that feels really
00:06fun to tap into and and let people like experience and go there again so um definitely parts of it
00:14like peer through and and i'm just enjoying it there are a few people who can say they shaped
00:23millennial culture before they could even drive a car and then kept that momentum going for decades
00:28hillary duff is a disney icon she's back with a new album a tour and she's playing odyssey's leading
00:34ladies march 10th my name is brew hillary duff i want to jump right into performing first if that
00:40works with you like i feel like performing would be almost second nature for you you know at this
00:45point but being away from touring for a bit of time how does preparing for a show feel different now
00:51well i would think if you asked me this question two months ago i would be like i'm in rehearsals
00:56every single day i'm grinding you know like just making sure that i feel totally comfortable and
01:04confident in like how i move and you know then you add singing on top of move like it's just
01:08this whole
01:09big thing you add your band like choreo it's all kind of just it's felt very digestible but like scary
01:16not doing something for 20 years you're like who am i in this spot again you know yeah um but
01:23we did it
01:24in a way that was like kind of just like adding the next layer adding the next layer adding the
01:28next
01:29layer you know until we were like on the stage with my wardrobe and like my band and everything
01:35was kind of like ready to go um now i feel comfortable i have like seven or eight shows
01:41under my belt and i'm like and now i miss it when i'm not doing it every week so yeah
01:46you know it's
01:47continued to like grow and scale and i think like by design we kind of you know everybody wanted me
01:53to feel like super comfortable and um just keep keep building so it's bigger and bigger you know
02:00yeah for sure i feel like that's a good piece of advice for anything too like they always say
02:03the checklist is so important just do one small thing rome wasn't built in a day right 100 and i
02:08think that my brain tends to like go to like the end goal and be like oh my god how
02:12am i ever going to
02:13get there and everyone's like calm down or do it step by step and and that's such a good yeah
02:19lesson for anything that you're trying to build or accomplish in your life yeah i love that you're
02:23feeling good about it when you are on stage though performing do you get transported in a way to like
02:27being 16 like what are you feeling performing now i think there's definitely times that i feel
02:35like i'm tapping into you know this old version of me that's very like lived in and you know
02:43sorry my cat is now i told you i'm at home welcome i feel more me and comfortable and confident
02:51than i
02:52ever have so you know if old parts of me start to you know filter in there like i think
02:59i embrace it
03:00and i feel good with it now and i don't really like shy away and i think it's such a
03:05lovely place to
03:06be meeting people you know the show is this combination of like me now and then this like
03:12nostalgia play that feels really fun to tap into and and let people like experience and go there
03:17again so um definitely parts of it like peer through and and i'm just enjoying it yeah for sure
03:26i can't wait to see this show on tour when we get to see you in new york but uh
03:31there's not many
03:31artists either where i feel like parents would enjoy it as much as the kids that they're bringing like i
03:38mean
03:38of course you get those reluctant dads where they come to the show and they're like watching but i
03:40feel like i could be a dad and i would be front row with my kid watching your show like
03:45what does
03:45that mean to have the equal presence uh to you gosh it's an honor honestly to to be able to
03:52you know
03:53cross generations is like a really powerful thing and i know how much family means to me and you know
04:00to
04:01think that people can you know bring their kids and they can bop along and be having a good time
04:07but
04:07you know this is really for the parents and the people that have grown up with me that are now
04:12you
04:12know having families of their own or like living in their adult life like we've made it here you know
04:20and it's i want to meet people on that level for sure but you know my friends kids know all
04:26the the
04:27words to my songs hopefully they don't know what it's all about but right not yet i think it's fun
04:33to to to see it be multi-generational it means a whole lot to me absolutely speaking of family
04:40with international women's month that's a few days away coming up in march and then march 10th we have
04:45odyssey's leading ladies that we're so happy to have you be a part of so many women look up to
04:50you
04:50and have for a long time so who are some women you know to you that come to mind that
04:54have helped mold
04:54you to who you are today you know i think that my answer when i was younger probably would have
05:01been
05:02a lot different um but now i'm so inspired by my my friends you know who are in the thick
05:10of like
05:11motherhood and figuring out the the work-life balance and trying to do it all like really it's just
05:20all my like friends who inspire me and make me think about things differently and watch what
05:29they're doing and me wanting to apply parts of that to my life or my family um i don't think
05:34it's
05:35like some big you know outside actor or something like that i think it's honestly like the women that
05:43i'm surrounded by inspire me the most right now because we're in the thick of it man i feel like
05:48we're in the
05:48trenches and we're all learning from each other and we all lean on each other when we need to
05:52and um i think those are the ones that that i take notes from constantly yeah and those are the
05:59ones
05:59you know the people you see the most right and those are the ones that have the most impact because
06:02you just spend the most amount of time and share those experiences with you know the person who
06:07picks up when you're like hey i need five minutes of your time i need to vent or i need
06:11to bounce this
06:12off of you or i need guidance i need you know that that it's like the um what was that
06:17show
06:17call a millionaire or something and you phone a friend phone a friend phone a friend oh my gosh
06:23what a throwback but yeah it's so true you gotta have those people you know you're gonna get the
06:27maybe not the right answer but the truest answer and the ones that you trust so that's so good it's
06:31it's all about having that support for sure and um gosh so fun to have like your husband
06:36is support for making this album like someone who worked with you hand in hand on this project um
06:41i'm just curious is it true that you only had what was it one fight during the whole
06:46making of this album yeah what was what caused friction that day let's let's let's we had one
06:53fight like about work yeah yeah we definitely had an outside um but we don't fight so much honestly
07:03like we tend to have like one or two big blowouts a year like no bickering no like i just
07:10we both
07:11don't operate like that so um truly making the record was a dream and i would be i mean we're
07:18honest about everything the whole world knows he's had a vasectomy like we're pretty we lay it we lay
07:24it all out on the on the table um working with him was just a dream and i felt so
07:29like held and so
07:31honored and you know safe just to talk about all the things that i wanted to talk about and how
07:39i
07:39wanted to you know connect with people through what are the things that really affect me in my life and
07:44he was such a good ally and person to help like shape that and and word it and help me
07:52really like
07:52get across what i wanted it was just really it was a dream yeah and you know what you got
07:57to have
07:58the whole time someone's not telling the truth you know there's going to be those differences that
08:02come up when you're working on music or anything in general so um yeah it's so cool to have that
08:07experience and roommates is all over we're playing it on the radio and a great early romance theme
08:12what are some themes that you were really enjoyed exploring during the writing process of this album
08:17one there's a lot of like anxiety through the record um i think themes of you know being fearful of
08:27of
08:27you know being in a long-term relationship and wondering if you're gonna feel that excitement
08:32of like first sever again um a lot of family stuff abandonment issues uh you know grappling with like
08:43the old you versus the the the you where you're at now and wondering you know if that person you
08:51know
08:51still exists in you and how to find her like there's a lot of heavy themes on the record but
08:57it's all
08:57disguised in like a glittery going out outfit oh i love that and i really love that too i feel
09:04like
09:04that speaks to a big part of my personality where i'm like there's a lot going on over here but
09:09we're
09:09having a good time yeah but don't laugh or cry um that's so it's so great because i feel like
09:15that
09:15ties into who you are at least who we know you as i feel like when you hear someone mention
09:20hillary
09:21duff it's like gosh she's so authentic and what do you think it is that made that image so prominent
09:25for so long you know i think it probably started with my lizzie mcguire days you know i think that
09:30playing a part on tv that was in people's living rooms every week you know and people were tuning in
09:36to
09:37see that character have such like real life experiences and you know troubles and and making
09:44people not feel so alone you know was definitely a part of what introduced me to people and and made
09:54us have this you know lifelong connection and i kind of say it all the time where i'm like i
09:59wish i could
10:00tell you that at 12 or 13 when i was lizzie mcguire that i was such a good actress that
10:03i wasn't just
10:04being me but i wasn't i was just showing up to work and i was doing things as her and
10:10i was just being
10:11me you know yeah um and i think you know through a long journey in this industry um
10:20it's been something i've really worked towards to like continue to be my authentic self and continue to
10:28um be real and honest about my life and and what it's been like you know and and connecting with
10:37people on a on a level that that feels authentic well it shows and we we feel that we hear
10:42that
10:42through the music so congrats on that and as a disney kid my last thing i feel like i could
10:46ask
10:46you a million questions but i promise this is my only lizzie question when you look back at that era
10:51what do you think it did teach you that you still carry into your work today i think that it
10:57taught
10:57me a lot of things but one is just a very serious work ethic you know when you are a
11:02child actor like
11:04that you really want to please and show up and do a good job like you know you booked a
11:11job and that's
11:13you go on hundreds of auditions sometimes more before you book a job you know and so i think i
11:20took
11:20that really seriously and i think it taught me you know the power of of hard work and respecting
11:27myself and the people that you know are showing up to support that job like and then and then it
11:33also
11:33backfires a little bit because you're like not really used to saying no yeah and saying no feels
11:38hard so that was like a whole learned thing that i had to you know kind of learn some boundaries
11:42but
11:43to protect myself but i think just you know hard work and and like realizing that it's it's a job
11:53and to like respect it maybe yeah no that's a great one i love that and i can't wait to
11:59uh see the tour
12:00obviously in person we'll see you in new york i'm so excited for leading ladies thank you for the time
12:04uh hillary enough congrats on being back by the way what is the one thing that people say to you
12:08the most i
12:08was gonna say i was gonna wrap this with this is what dreams are made of but what is the
12:11one thing that
12:11people say to you the most when they bump into you they're like you raised me oh my god you
12:15raised okay that's wholesome all right i didn't know if they're just gonna chuck sing to me paulo
12:18or something but that's wholesome that's really sweet i get sing to me paulo a lot i get this is
12:22what dreams are made of a lot yeah you know i love that i'm i'm finally at a place where
12:27i'm like
12:28get to giggle alongside of it and yeah i'm really appreciative for what i'm always met with from
12:33people which is like such like love and adoration and excitement so um happy happy to to play the
12:40show and yeah oh so nice to meet you it's all compliments hope you know you're an icon and
12:46can't wait to see you soon thank you again for the time and congrats on everything thank you thanks so
12:50much
