The US-Israeli attack on Iran is “not compatible with the international rules-based system”, Scotland’s First Minister has said.Speaking on Monday at St Andrews House in Edinburgh, John Swinney voiced his concern over the intervention, but stopped short of saying he considered it illegal. His comments come as around 300,000 Britons are believed to be in countries targeted by Iran, though it is not clear how many are Scottish.

00:05I'm deeply concerned by the events in the Middle East over the weekend, and I bear no
00:12warmth towards the Iranian regime. I think it is a repressive and a repugnant regime.
00:18But when I look at the events of the last few days, it becomes ever more clear to me
00:23that the United States and Israeli action, the original action, is not compatible with
00:28the international rules-based system. And as a consequence of that, the United Kingdom
00:33now finds itself getting dragged into this conflict, an illustration of how quickly these
00:38events can escalate from their original foundations. And that's deeply concerning, and what's important
00:46is that we now do everything we can to de-escalate the situation and to find a negotiated and a
00:52diplomatic solution to this crisis.
