00:00From German TV to the White House, how are AI videos shaping the ICE narrative?
00:09In Germany, broadcaster CDF caused a stir when it removed one of its U.S. correspondents from her position.
00:16But what was the reason?
00:17Well, on the 15th of February, the journalist produced a report featuring a video of a woman and two children
00:22being arrested
00:23by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, otherwise known as ICE.
00:28But the video was AI-generated, as you can see by the sore watermark.
00:33CDF has apologised, but these incidents are becoming increasingly common as AI-generated videos become more sophisticated.
00:40Detection firm Truthscan detected that one private Instagram account had posted nearly 200 fake ICE clips.
00:47In them, ICE agents are chased out of churches, confronted in schools and seen fighting with baristas,
00:53with the content racking up more than 2 million views altogether.
00:56For Truthscan's AI experts, the giveaway signs are subtle but consistent.
01:01For instance, here you can see smoke rising through a solid surface.
01:05AI-generated videos of ICE agents turning up at events have also spread on Facebook.
01:09And the use of digitally altered ICE footage stretches up to the highest echelons of public office.
01:15In January, the White House shared this AI-manipulated photo of a woman called Nakeema Levy-Armstrong,
01:21who was arrested for allegedly organising anti-ICE protests.
01:25Armstrong has said she was disgusted by the image, which artificially added tears to the real image of her arrest.
01:32White House officials said the memes will continue when asked about the post.
01:36On the other hand, when Alex Peretti was shot by ICE in January,
01:40many social media users questioned whether the footage was real, arguing it was AI.
01:44The situation suggests that AI videos now contribute to shaping the public perception
01:48about politically sensitive issues, such as ICE's actions.
